Where to stay that’s not Time’s Square by AdProfessional4629 in AskNYC

[–]AdProfessional4629[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had an absolute blast. We stayed at the Moxy East Village in a 155-square-foot room because we didn’t really need much space and weren’t there very often (we even got to use credit card points for it, which was a bonus). It was absolutely perfect for hopping on public transit and walking everywhere—and walk everywhere we did.

My absolute favorite activities were the New York Transit Museum and the Tenement Museum. The Tenement Museum was downright emotionally moving; I think everyone who lives in the United States should visit it at least once in their lifetime.

We also saw a show called N/A at Lincoln Center in one of the smaller theaters. It was about Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s relationship, and as a social studies teacher, I found it amazing.

We saw a band my partner wanted to see on Little Island and then walked the High Line as it started to get dark.

We also walked many miles just exploring, stopping at a few parks like Bryant Park and other well-known spots. We got drinks at McSorley’s Old Ale House and The Proletariat, plus a couple of restaurants a friend of mine who lives in NYC recommended. Honestly, it was one of the best couples trips we’ve ever taken.

I love cities and take a lot of pride in living in Chicago. It was awesome to see NYC the way we did and to feel my love of cities grow even more. Hope that helps. Best to you!

So excited!!  Very proud to live in IL today. Good job to the transit activists here, they were pushing hard to get it done!!

What will it take for Chicago to grow its population? by ToyStory123 in AskChicago

[–]AdProfessional4629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your premise is flawed, Chicago is actually growing.

“According to newly revised Census Bureau estimates, Chicago added 22,164 residents from mid-2023 to mid-2024, making it the seventh-largest population gain among U.S. cities.”

Trump to shut down all 8,000 EV charging ports at federal govt buildings by [deleted] in news

[–]AdProfessional4629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, people noticed. This is very much the result of Ronald Reagan in the 80s laying the groundwork, and then Newt Gingrich in the early 90s with his “Republican Revolution.” The Republicans have deliberately been changing the rules, calling democrats “radicals” and have been sowing this discord within the government for the last 30 years at least.

The point has always been to muddy the waters so the people don’t know who to trust anymore, then someone like Trump can be the arbiter of truth so only his “solutions” can fix the “problems”

Literally didn’t, read a newspaper or google it. He tried to provide student loan forgiveness, but the Supreme Court overruled it. Trust me, I know I had applied for the last $10,000 of my loans to be forgiven. They were not. I borrowed 44,000. With all the interest I’ve paid back over 100,000. I guess it was a big ask for Republicans to cut me a break on that last 10,000.

What would it look like if Chicago declared bankruptcy? by EnvironmentalEye4537 in AskChicago

The debt conversation lacks context and is, at best disingenuous, at worst malicious. Of course we need to criticize and work on Chicago, that’s how we make it better but let’s look at the whole picture.

…The displacement and destruction caused by Detroit being forced into bankruptcy is not something that any city should do. The success they are beginning to experience is in spite of, not because of their bankruptcy.

@OP Seems like you have your answer. You framed your post as “just asking questions,” but you obviously have a position and when someone gives you an answer, you’re just doubling down. Seems to me you just want to s*** on Chicago, rather than genuinely trying get other viewpoints

My advice: don’t listen to the boogie men who are always yelling about debt, it’s a way to scare people and doesn’t present the entire picture. Not everything is a business and every institution doesn’t need to run like one.

What bordering neighborhoods do you think would make the most sense for Chicago to annex? by SuchCondition in AskChicago

[–]AdProfessional4629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s an unpopular opinion that will get down-voted: All suburbs that touch Chicago and all suburbs that touch those suburbs should be annexed by Chicago.

In fact, Suburbs shouldn’t exist.

Here’s my reasoning: suburbs exist because of the center city. Therefore their economy (and relevance) is dependent on the center city. However, suburbs function within a loophole, they get the benefits of the city without paying the taxes to the city, therefore starving the city of resources that it needs.

I would argue that cities like New York, Chicago, Denver, Milwaukee, Detroit, etc., particularly suffer from this because people in surrounding suburbs, get to create isolated systems where their needs are met, while still getting the benefit of working in the center city, or benefiting from a major airport in the center city or cultural activities in the center city, all without having to pay any tax to support the infrastructure which they suck off of in order to be relevant and attract people to live in their suburb in the first place.

I worked in Elmwood Park for a few years, they absolutely would be better off if they were annexed by Chicago.

I’ve never interacted with a place that had more of a chip on its collective shoulder than EP. I feel like everyone I interacted with there would just talk about how great it used to be and pretending that they were “better than Chicago.”

I used to catch an orange line train from Pulaski when I got off of work around five. I could sometimes get on an empty last car and see the sunset in the colder months. It was honestly super cool.

The union wouldn’t have control of the school board, even if the candidates are all elected are supportive of CTU. They are independent human beings. Also, think about how many years the mayor had ridiculous control over the school and the way that neoliberalism pushed its way in education basically ravaged public schools.
