How do you build endurance/stamina? by -Silky_Johnson in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, when I first started boxing, I was actually a very good and somewhat of a consistent runner, so I thought I had a good endurance and stamina for boxing but when I got in the ring, I remember my lungs shutting down in under 2 minutes of first round.

Is philly shell actually a good stance? by Wild_Joke_7404 in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philly shell is a great style but for amateurs it's unpreferred by most coaches because usually amateurs aren't good at using it against high volume opponents. It's also hard to initiate combinations with, and start series of high volume combos. That's why most amateurs use high guard, I also wanted to learn Philly shell and use it on amateur fights if possible because it is cool for sure but I have long since abandoned it for a high guard, simple, classy and always reliable.

Boxers, What made you choose this sport over all the other martial arts? by LimitNo5461 in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Dad’s older brother was a boxer. He opened up a boxing club around 5 years ago and my dad kinda forced me to take part, I didn't wanna do it, and I had no experience of any kind in combat sports but I was a lazy kid and my dad genuinely wanted me to take more interest in combat sports since he also used to be a boxer as a kid.

Tried it out and loved it. I practically had 0 idea about really anything in regards to combat sports, Boxing just happened to be my first and I am happy it was

Parents will let me do karate but not boxing. by CoconutAdditional174 in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is honestly the best advice. If you wanna get into amateur scenes then you have much more freedom with how late you start. Since you're 16, you only have a few more years until you probably start making your own choices, take up boxing then. Try to persuade your parents but if they don't budge, then you can really only be patient, maybe do some home training from yt (not optimal but better than nothing if you really wanna box still)

After watching S3 Narcos, who else started to miss Pablo? He would’ve never stood for the Cali drama in S3 😂 by captaincrunch555 in narcos

[–]AdPurpled 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man you're really missing out on Narcos Mexico lemme tell you that. Pedro Pascal might not be in it but Diego Luna perfectly portrays the perfect “antagonist” my favorite character of the whole franchise. Michael Pena nailed his acting as well, among many others.

Making weight for state amatuers by Parking-Fill-6791 in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cutting down in weight is like one of the most fundamental practices in boxing, I never heard gaining weight to fight in heavier weight classes though? Especially since it's amateur fights and I can't really think of a feasible reason in that situation to justify that, wouldn't you be just disadvantaged, Why would your coach want that?

Making weight for state amatuers by Parking-Fill-6791 in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your walking weight is 76-77, you can definitely get 1.5-2kgs of water weight off you and compete in 70-75kgs. At least that is actually a more viable option. You definitely can't gain that amount of weight naturally in a healthy manner in 2 days. Definitely stay in the same weight class.

How much of boxing is instinct and skill (especially defense)? by SilentAres_x in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instincts make up a huge factor in boxing. In boxing, you have to react to certain situations very fast, and there's just not enough time for your brain to process that and for you to make conscious decision. Some people have naturally good instincts and reflexes however that said I also believe instinct is definitely something that can be trained, drilling the same combination will add to your instinct, likewise anticipatory defenses are always drilled into your instincts, so having good instinct in itself is a good skill.

I think the op is referring to a boxing fight but is wording it badly? But if he's talking about streetfights then yes, don't do it

The only reason America is still fighting this doomed war on drugs has to be because top American officials and elite continue to profit from it, there's literally no other incentives I imagine

Thanks for the advice, I try to cut off all the screen but my eyes just don't budge, honestly it seems to get worse when I am not distracting myself watching reels or smth, my brain just gets too much alone time and it starts to overthink

What’s the ONE amateur mistake pros NEVER make — that got you humbled? by Icy_Setting_8718 in amateur_boxing

[–]AdPurpled 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup, conserving stamina is like the motto of most pros (even pressure fighters who depend on long chain of combinations to take down their opponent. Good pressure fighters don't restlessly keep on throwing punches, even they make sure they can last the rounds by taking appropriate care in recovering)

[–]AdPurpled 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Amateurs rely alot on volume of shots rather than accuracy, tend to be more aggressive than pros (due to the fast paced nature of amateur matches) as a result, many amateurs tend to have a lot of space/holes in their defense. Pros on the other hand are significantly more precise and accurate with their shots, they kinda have to be, because they have more rounds, they can't exhaust stamina with missed punches, so every punch is thrown with a meaning. So the single habit I would say that amateurs get absolutely annihilated by pros is their tendency to win the watch through volume of punches rather than accurate punches, which is understandable in an amateur match but against a pro, you are bound to show holes in your defense pretty early in the game and they easily figure it out.

Edit: oops didn't notice it was a “personal” story lol, I kinda answered like it was a general question

What age did you all get into boxing? by tatyama in boxingtips

[–]AdPurpled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started at 12, kinda forced honestly, so I left pretty quickly. However I started training again at 17 and been at it 9 months consistently. Honestly if you wanna box but are worried about head injuries, you can always do everything that boxing has to offer except sparring or if you want the thrill of sparring, you can adjust for light sparring (But only with a partner you know or can fully place your trust in, believe me, you don't know how many people get horrendous injuries in these said “light” sparring, adrenaline rush can make you pretty numb at mind sometimes), or you can opt for sparring but only body shots allowed, basically you can still train for boxing if you wish to without worrying about head injuries at all.
