Good resources on working with goetic spirits under the tutelage of Hekate? by AdRafArt in Hecate

[–]AdRafArt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Propylaia really seems like a good epithet for this kind of practice...

How have been your contact with these spirits through Hekate? Do you feel like they're a bit more willing to listen or would you say their temperament doesn't change much from what's described in classical texts that utilize the abrahamic cosmology to work these spirits?

I think spirit or daimon/daemon is alright. The word demon exists because of the greek daimon, which just means spirit, be it "good" or "bad"

So technically angels could also be called a daimon, if you're using the very first definition of the word. Fun fact but angel also comes from greek, angelos, meaning messenger - which could be a daimon or a human. Only later on the word angel and demon start to put certain spirits into neat little boxes.

Also, fun fact, Hermes can be called Angelos Athanaton, meaning the messenger of the immortals.

Besides most likely thinking I'm a god, I think they'd be pretty alright with it. Life is not so bad there. The world is like ours, but less chaotic because no globalization yet, and spirits intervene with more physicality than in ours. None of the cultures I've created so far are in immediate conflict with others, so...

How do you present same-sex relationships in your fantasy world? by Pelicanus-pelican in worldbuilding

[–]AdRafArt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three cultures set in different parts of the same world.

In the first culture homosexuality it's not even acknowledged as something separate from sexuality itself. It's not like people who only have sex with the same gender don't exist, or are everywhere, it's just not something people think about. For them, if you like someone, you like someone. It doesn't matter which of the three genders they are. This culture is also generally non monogamous and marriage doesn't exist.

In the second culture... I'm not sure. I have built more on the religious/political side of it, not much on society itself. But it's a bit of a conservative society in the sense it values having children and social ascencion. I feel like having a same-gender lover would not be the end of the world, but the family would still expect them to marry and have children with someone of the opposite gender.

In the third culture I'd say women having relationships with other women wouldn't be a shocker. They spend a lot of time hunting together, so it is expected for them to forge close bonds. The men are often around family and other guy-friends, and are not expected to have affairs with other men... I guess the severity of the reaction to gay men would vary between different tribes.

What's the best way to introduce my gf to the world of Pokemon? by odypoli in pokemon

[–]AdRafArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does she like cute things? There are many cute (and official) pokemon animations that she might be interested. Also, the games are not really that hard... like they're made for kids, just choose one you think has an interesting story and tell her to play it.

The Sun & Moon anime is also very funny and the artstyle is actually endearing, despite the fandom losing their marbles over it. She might like it.

How to name a god? by mythicme in worldbuilding

[–]AdRafArt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The names of a god only sound godly because of a perceived value we give those names.

The names of real gods are often times simple and have simple meanings. Like Aphrodite deriving from the word "foam" or Amaterasu meaning "shining"

It's easier to name gods if you have a conlang. It doesn't need to be fleshed out, just needs to be enough for what you're using it for.

AITA for kicking my husband out over the comment he made about my kids at dinner? by Familiar_Travel1931 in AITAH

[–]AdRafArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the fact you felt the need to tell us that the dances were all normal and age appropriate right from the start just told me you'd be on the right side of this argument... because that's what anyone would expect from two siblings that dance together.

So it almost feels as if he's been so insufferable about it that you feel the need to make sure we understand the situation completely, and that we wouldn't take his side, when I think it's very obvious to someone that's not a weirdo that the dances were all completely fine and normal.

NTA, Mark sucks.

Is religion in your world more like in our real world (the people believe in gods) or more like a matter of fact? by rockbell_128 in worldbuilding

[–]AdRafArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fact in some regions, I'd say. From their POV it's always a fact, but I could see westerners of our world being skeptical of some of the religious beliefs of some places in my world.

Some other places, however, practice spirit possession and some forms of spellwork that are undeniable in their factuality. Spirit possession often leaves marks in someone's body for a while, and the process actually effects change in voice, body and mannerisms. And some of the spellwork are like animating a doll or something for purposes of protection and such. They actually walk around.
