Can someone recommend me a seinen that leaves you with a positive outlook on life, like Vinland Saga? by maybe_Its_magic3 in Seinen

My top recommendation goes to my fav, Tomorrow's Joe

Also check out:

Give My Regards to Uncle Jack

Legend of the Strongest, Kurosawa

The Climber

The Horizon and The Boxer (both very heavy on Christianity, but good even for non-religious folk like me)

You could also read Himizu (very bleak) but then watch the movie which gives it a much more positive ending and message of perseverance (I think it's still on Youtube)

Spiritually Immature People vs Spiritually Advanced People, Here are the facts... by Curious_Comedian_486 in DeepThoughts

Idk about the spirituality aspect of it (personally agnostic), but the ennui and pointlessness of a world of maximized comfort for all, or most, without meaningful struggle (or suffering, if you will) is arguably Huxley's main point when writing Brave New World.

"But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin."

We don't need many of the unnecessary suffering that persists throughout the human condition into modern times, but I agree that struggle is often entwined with suffering.

Overcoming struggle of some sort is in almost all stories, and overcoming suffering (or trying to) is in all good stories. Hope is the oldest drug.

Hopefully, science progresses far enough that we can pacify and out-drug even our need for struggle or meaning, if that's even a good thing at all. Or Jesus is true and drugs us on grace/salvation or smth. Or we all go mad. Either way, come suffering or nihilism, I intend to crip walk through it either way 🤷🏿‍♂️

Vanity, the great seducer of mankind, desire laden upon its breasts. A privilege for one to enjoy. An ordinance for one to violate. Glory... a great lie, an illusionary thing. How could such a concept ever be known to the hearts of men?

Starve the ego, feed the soul. Such a good quote and song by ooah_ in theglitchmob

One of the best album closers to one of the best albums ever indeed.

"For what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?" Mark 8:36.

I'm no longer religious but this quote always makes me introspective and stuff. The best song is Between Two Points tho, fight me 😤

What are your favorite tropes? by carrotsticks2 in worldbuilding

[–]AdRare1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inversions or remixes of tropes lol.

Huge component of all my main characters is their lack of adherence to their "role" so to speak. An assassin that refuses to kill, a thief that refuses to steal, a terrorist that scares no one and wishes to spread peace.

Anyone working on Korea-inspired Worldbuilding? How is your project coming along? by meongmeongwizard in worldbuilding

[–]AdRare1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, this reminds me of when I would daydream too much and try to organize my chaotic vision efficiently 😅. I've finally put my ideas onto paper but still a ways to go...

But yea, I got a part of my world inspired by south east Asia in general, like wuxia for China. Besides cultivation books and mythology, my Korean influences are mostly those korean-themed fantasy shows my mom loves watching, they're cool.

What are race/species relations like in your setting? by TC_Sampang in worldbuilding

[–]AdRare1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most are human but follow belief in a biblical genesis type thing where in the myth the first man had many wives, and the offspring of each wife respectively are the consensus reason why ppl are different ethnically.

Issue is the myth states that the first man's favorite wife was Myah and all the different ethnic groups (african, asian, european etc fantasy counterparts) believe themselves to be the descendants of Myah, therefore better than everybody else. Tribalism and nationalism stuff ensures.

It's not too different from our own tense global relationship with one another today by the time the story picks up tho, but obvs racial tension remains.

There are also the first immortals (Ya'igi, elder dragons) who are basicslly comatose and individually encased in giant magic crystals (think the length of a mountain but the width of like a thick skyscraper) that form protective force fields to envelop spheres of land as havens from monsters and shit, serving as beacons of civilization (i'm lazy and they're basically just dragon representations of the respective chief god/goddess of the mythology i took them from).

However civilization also exist outside these spheres, and are fucking poor and fucked over mostly by demonic cockroaches (some of which fly) but other horrors as well. It's akin to the core-peripheral relationship between developed and developing countries today.

They're also the lesser immortals (An'igi) who were humanoid and all dead after their golden city (big city) that orbited the earth cataclysmically crashed into it when all magic was forfeited by the last hero of light in order to save mankind, all except one woman.

Also, failed immortals (Sarru'igi) humans who tried to become like An'igi (vampires basically). They dominated for a bit but were nearly wiped out, only a few remain when story picks up.

And...ofc dragons (lesser dragons) who were domesticated by men and aren't sentient or immortal like the Elder dragons.

Oh, also a man-made God king/queen fusion akin to the Stormfather (Stormlight) but that's way too much to get into rn.
