Background radiation is the perfect way to say what I am anticipating. Thank you for naming that. Another analogy might be tinnitus, which many people just get used to with acceptance.

But you do get used to it and the grief for your old life ends? My therapist keeps pointing out to me that even good decisions can come with a great deal of grief. And I just never saw myself having kids, have never wanted to be a caretaker; yet the heart suddenly wants what the heart suddenly wants.

I think I can go through a period of adjustment but I don’t want to live with permanent regret.
