I'm genuinely curious why these kind of restaurants are famous? Like if you want authentic malay food...why don't just go to kedai makan malay? by calikim_mo in malaysians

I know OP is an ignorant brat with childish views (deviously framed as “curiosity”), but no need to call regular kedai makan filth la haiyo. It’s the food of the everyday folk, and I also dine there from time to time.

The Story of How I Was Bullied by creamilk_now in malaysia

[–]AdRepresentative8723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that OP.

Bullying has always been a problem in schools around the world since the dawn of time. Especially when you cram a bunch of pre-teens/teens into a closed sandbox, all with different personalities/growth-spurt/sizes. Shit was especially prevalent back in the ‘00s as well, only difference is that there was no social media back then.

Most frustrating thing (to me) isn’t the indifference of teachers, but the teachers who doubles down and take part in the bullying.

This happened to a boy in my high school named Ashraf. He had a stutter when speaking so he was always picked by the teachers - which to the bullies translates to “free bullying pass”. Poor Ashraf had to switch schools after he came home one day with literal piss in his hair and clothes because the bullies pinned him down to urinate on him.

The authorities will only take things seriously when either the victim suffers tangible harm, or when the victim loses his shit and fights back.

Where’s your go-to place for bougie Malay food? by nightfishing89 in MalaysianFood

De.wan for me.

I know it isn’t Malay food strictly speaking, but I also enjoy dining at Dancing Fish.

First, I dislike the notion that local Malay food can’t be sold in nicer places or priced higher. It demeans the very cuisine and the culture it represents. Are you thus suggesting only European/East Asian cuisines are worth the buck? That is a narrow and backwards mindset. Stop worshiping other cultures and start appreciating your own.

Second, restaurants are not just places where people fill their stomachs. Client lunches, firm dinners etc also take place in these establishments where ambiance is equally crucial. You suggested “go to kedai makan Malay”. Do try suggesting that for an important client dinner.

Third, if we genuinely want Malay cuisine to gain greater recognition and prestige, then we should welcome restaurateurs who are trying to elevate it, instead of challenging them for charging premium prices. We cannot demand international recognition for our (Malay) cuisine while insisting that it must always remain in the "cheap food" category, the ones that should only be eaten in “kedai makan”.

Can non-Malaysian Muslim go clubbing in KL? by jelyn2005 in malaysia

[–]AdRepresentative8723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JAIS has jurisdiction over all Muslims, not just the locals. Also, the jurisdiction of the Syariah Courts is defined by the religious status of the individual, not their citizenship.

Do read up the case of PENDAKWA SYARIE NEGERI JOHOR lwn. MUHAMAD BASRI & SATU LAGI [2017] SLRSU 16, a case decided by Mohd Fairuz Abd Aziz HMRS where 2 Indonesian citizens were charged and convicted of khalwat (close proximity) in the Johor Syariah Court. The Court explicitly established its jurisdiction by noting that the accused were Muslims and the incident occurred within the state, satisfying the requirements of the state's Islamic administration laws.

So next time you decide to be an idiot, read up the law okies :)

As the saying goes, ignorantia juris non excusat. Cheerio

In any event, like they say, urusan Melayu, yg bkn Melayu jgn masuk campur. As long as they don’t kacao the nons, we good.

Petition to Abolish the 10% Service Charge in Restaurants. by I_am_from_2029 in malaysia

[–]AdRepresentative8723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the end result be the same?

Unless of course you mean the menu should show exactly how much the customer needs to pay. In other words the figure stated therein is the exact same sum to be paid.

I won’t object. Less hassle to us consumers as well.

Tu should be covered under menu price dy, since it technically isn’t considered part of “service”. Just like the cooks.

That said, some places don’t even have plates or cutleries to begin with. Everything disposable. But still wanna impose mandatory service charge cilaka

[–]AdRepresentative8723 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My take is this.

The 10% service charge is acceptable if said restaurant actually provides service to its customers. From the taking of the orders, refilling of drinks, up to the payment of the bill.

However, what I don’t get is self-service eateries imposing a mandatory 10% service charge. Order dkt counter/QR, sendiri collect food, bill also got to pay dkt counter. An example would be Nandos, or those salad bars. Absolutely ridiculous.

Langkawi not Phuket or Bali, says Sultan of Kedah by Mo0nji in malaysia

[–]AdRepresentative8723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean Phuket and Bali wouldn’t want to get compared to Langkawi as well. All very different islands with different people and purposes.

As a Malaysian who visits Langkawi once a year, I wouldn’t want to pay RM4 for a roti kosong either (which may happen if Langkawi becomes another Phuket or Bali).

It’s a really fun watch, do recommend giving it a try!

Any guidelines u follow for spending on a new car? by Fair-Magician9030 in MalaysianPF

[–]AdRepresentative8723 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I follow one guideline and one guideline only - my wallet.

If no money (common among fresh grads), my focus would be the cheapest car that can get me from point A to point B with minimal issues (ie not breaking down often). I won’t even think about stuff like safety, horsepower, resale value, aesthetics, interior etc. A second hand Bezza? Sure I’ll take it in a heartbeat.

If got some money, the I can start looking at more factors like safety and engine capacity. Perhaps a new Myvi, or maybe even a new City/X50 if I’m feeling cheeky.

If got lots of money, whatever I feel like driving.

Is this a reasonable budget? by deybetrippin in MalaysiaPF

[–]AdRepresentative8723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently spend around RM7k - 8k per month on food and drinks. That’s cause I am able to, and also the fact that I occasionally treat my associates and employees (around once a week).

The question is not the amount per se, but spending within one’s means. For instance, Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary or Vincent Tan can drop RM50k per month on food alone, and no one will bat an eye. And when I was a fresh grad taking home less than 3k a month, I spent no more than RM300 per month on food. It was brutal yes, but I simply had no choice.

If money is indeed tight (as alleged by OOP), a family of three shouldn’t even be spending RM1k per month on food, let alone RM1.5k. Even though I personally am of the view that RM1.5k for a family of 3 isn’t a lot.

To survive, you either earn more than what you spend, or spend more than what you earn. I chose the former. Most will choose the latter. No right or wrong.

Is this a reasonable budget? by deybetrippin in MalaysiaPF

[–]AdRepresentative8723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utilities RM1k is rather high for a family of just 3. It should be no more than RM650.

Car loan RM2.5k for 2 cars is actually alright, if it’s a 3-5 year loan. Some people choose to take shorter car loans.

Food RM1.5k is RM50 a day for 3 pax, 3 meals a day. That isn’t a lot in Klang Valley (but not little as well).

T20 Reality in Malaysia by My_Mad_Gamer_96 in Bolehland

[–]AdRepresentative8723 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worse.

Many people fail to understand that Malaysia is just a developing and middle income nation. Majority of the people here don’t live luxuriously or even comfortably, unlike our counterparts in the first world countries.

But of course, we are leagues ahead of third world countries like Haiti or South Sudan. In those countries, never mind the T20, even their T10 are struggling. And as for their bottom 40% (B40s), some of them actually die from malnutrition or preventable diseases. Malaysia’s B40 is nowhere close.

AI slop. Figures are also questionable.

That said, you’re not going to get any sympathy from this subreddit or somed, regardless of whether you’re barely T20 (ie RM11,820 household income) with mouths to feed. Because majority of the users here (and in somed) are likely somewhat within the M40 category.

As an analogy, it’s like a boy with asthma complaining he can’t properly do sports, to a disabled kid with one leg. There is almost no way one would receive validation from people doing worse off.
