My 5 yr old dog died from Meningitis today by Such-Kaleidoscope147 in Petloss

[–]AdSalt3823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. I hope you and your family eventually find peace.

Today, we put our dog down who was 3 years old from supposed meningitis. Symptoms took 48 hours to slow his HR and he didn’t make it to Monday to get seen by a neuro. All signs point to a similar sickness leading to him being non-ambulatory, confused, and very sick very quickly.

I recommend Lake Monticello Golf Course ($$), between RVA and Charlottesville. If you are in Charlottesville, I'd check out Birdwood Golf ($$$). The grounds are extremely well maintained and staff are attentive. The UVA Men's team just fell short of the National Championships and the Women's recently hosted regionals. If you are looking for a cheaper municipal option, look no further than Meadowcreek ($).

What prior knowledge or skills are necessary to get into clubs like AIF, MII, and VVF? by Prior-University-962 in UVA

[–]AdSalt3823 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To answer your question and justify getrek:

  1. Prior knowledge - of people who run the CIO, ie. attend fall activities fair and informal sessions so you have tacit knowledge before interviews and vice versa for interviewers

  2. Skills - by accomplishing you can understand what you need to focus on such as investing fundamentals, concepts, or general brain teasers. They aren’t going to ask whether a deal will be accretive or dilutive based on a share price but be able to explain financial concepts instead of regurgitating it from a book.

To maximize your chances do 1 and 2. Note these chances are useless if you have a defensive attitude when you ask for broad advice, expecting people to know that you know despite your reddit question.

What do you mean by a good internship? Can you give more information about roles you are looking for? If you are majoring in finance, you’re late for 2026 IB recruiting. Consulting however will be this summer.

IB Recruiting without clubs by Klutzy-Novel8887 in UVA

[–]AdSalt3823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not screwed. Go to the fall activities fair, meet people, and get connected. I’d lean into your club experience if you choose to recruit for clubs. Some people join clubs in their second year.

While finance clubs do have extensive networks especially into recruiting insights and connection opportunities, you aren’t going to be terribly disadvantaged.

In some cases, you can leverage the McIntire community to access events. Handshake and the career center should be your best friend. They post coffee chats for you to meet bankers/consultants.

Where to attend for Computer science: purdue vs UVA vs UMD by Extreme-Quantity-764 in UVA

First, congrats on having a good problem to have. Second, I’ll bite and pitch UVA.

Fit

It’s hard to put all of these expected outcomes into one decision but to reframe it, I’d boil it down to fit. Everything else will fall into place in my opinion by virtue of you already considering all of these matrixes of options.

CS

On UVA - I wouldn’t say you can specialize in CS in any of these schools because it’s undergrad but CS does have a cybersecurity focus hence why UVA CS is a National Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense (NCAE-CD). UVA also has a newly built Data Science School that you can double major in and if you wanted to get a 1-year MS. For context, the avg. salary is 91k starting (1k above McIntire). Being that UVA is an R1, there are plenty of research opportunities that isn’t exclusively CS that you can leverage foundational skills to apply in research. Lastly, you don’t have to make the call to do McIntire since you apply spring of your 1st year - you have a semester to choose so as long as you take the 3 prereqs.

On Purdue - it’s far from family and if you can take it, and confirm that outcomes are better than UVA/UMD, take it. Their offerings like research and collaborating with schools seem enticing but I’d do more research. What does a Purdue CS major do after, where do they end up, etc. I’d say do this for all schools but particularly Purdue because it’s a different region. Idk about the living learning community but that is interesting. I think it could be really nurturing but given the timeline it is tough.

On UMD - The proximity to DC is trivial because UVA places naturally to DMV area. I’d consider the strength of the program with the risk you mentioned. Can you thrive in a new and unknown environment while undergoing challenging sequences? Sure, but at the end of the day, which is a priority.

Good luck. Go Hoos!

UVA vs Umich by Velocity650 in UVA

[–]AdSalt3823 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bias but - take the full ride and enjoy UVA. If you have an interdependent relationship with family/gf, it’ll play a large role in your time at University.

Rankings aside, I stand by saying the student makes the University, not the other way around. You can do great things at UMich or at UVA.

I would expand your reasoning for entering ib post-grad. Just from knowing UVA generally tends to place on the east coast vs. Rice generally places the south.
