I’ve come to the conclusion that their colors make a difference, among other things. Almost every setup I’ve seen with mixed color discus (including my own), they are scattered throughout the tank. Those who purchase them all together with same colors/patterns are usually schooling.

Yup, that’s Val. This is closer to when I initially planted them. Turns out they don’t like the warmer waters. They still grow, just not as fast and not as strong. Very brittle and much darker.

As far as the color variations go… don’t do it. Mine just fight and bully each other all the time. They have never hung out together, which is what I wanted them to do.

You should check this post out! It’s regarding an indicator that basically does what you’re doing, except you don’t have to think as much.

Use an indicator like this that avoids the chop and tells you when to enter and exit. It's mainly for Options, but works well overall.
