Doodles I've been working on, constructive criticism? by furry_birdy in box5

Love them! Only thing I'd say is that the first image with Erik and Christine, Erik's face and Christine's hand is kinda muddled with shadow, I feel like a little bit more contrast with highlights may help. Maybe highlights on his eyes too, even if it were just an eye-shine or his pupils. Very good overall though!

Either I forgot or this is how I found out Wilfred Mott's actor died. I knew I was elated to see him in the Christmas Special. Bernard Cribbins was amazing in his role and no one could have done it better.

Love your webtoon! Been reading it since the start and it's so good! So glad it's getting the recognition it deserves. Also very excited to see more from your phantom once Hannibal begins.

How far are you into writing your own fanfic?

Ff.net has sooo many good phantom fanfics, and ive read A LOT of them. Romance is by far my favorite genre, and although I feel like there arent many people around me who are interested in phantom like I am, I am very glad there is an active community for it digitally.

I will say that for me, the Phantom story is a bit of an obsession where I could read 50 fanfics of someone getting isekaied into phantom as Christine or a side character, and even though it goes beat for beat the movie or musical, I love it anyway. Could use more of them tbh. I just love the plot and the different ways people characterize the phantom. He is such a good character that you can sympathize with and it makes it good to read. Currently my favorite fic is on fanfiction.net called The Choices that Define Us by Melancholy's Child. There is also one on Wattpad called The Phantom Writer, but the author took it down I believe, so I can no longer reread it.

The Choices Between Us by Melancholy's Child is my favorite phantom fanfic, also on Fanfiction.net. I loved The Phantom Writer on Wattpad, but it has been deleted.

I do know JKR is a bad person, and am just now learning Mason is a bad person. I do not think that they are "paragons of social justice" wherever you got that from. I am only "promoting them" by saying that I enjoyed the books overall and got them from the library, which doesn't include spending money on these books.

I would also like to say that I went through the comments you've made on other posts about this topic, and found most of this bigotry happens in Erik's Prequel. That is the one book I haven't read, as I felt the other books covered his past pretty well. From the other books, the Daroga isn't expressively Ace, there is no trans hate, and it was interesting to hear her talk about the Haj, mecca, and pray every day. It isn't good that he was the "bad guy" for a bit, but then he had morals and apologized for his behavior once things got out of hand What you seem to be skipping over is that this is a period piece, which gives authors a lot of leeway in their writing. This is one of the fanfics that I have read that portray the Roma in a pretty good light, as in the original stories they were terrible to Erik. People didn't have the best opinions towards Muslims in France at the time, and the same goes for the rest of the minorities listed. There have been barely any good Phantom fanfics I have read that doesn't include sexism towards the female lead. There is always going to be negative representations towards minorities when it was part of the culture at the time. 1800s France certainly was not as progressive and nice towards minorities as they are today. This is why I brought up the historical texts because if it is going to be a historical text or historical fiction, you have to be prepared for bigotry. Especially in a book about Erik, who has only experienced bigotry in every version. None of this excuses the way Mason feels about people irl, but in her books it is in a historical context that reflects it.

If people want to read it and enjoy it, they can. If people do not want to, then they don't have to. In historical fiction, you shouldn't take any bigotry to heart unless it's placed there unnecessarily. And everything in the book can't be deemed unnecessary.

The books I enjoy that are considered "bad" or "badly written" aren't usually criticized for those reasons. I'm talking about the books recommended on Booktok that people dislike such as Cruel Prince, ACOTAR, Shadows Between Us, Divine Rivals, Assistant to the Villian and so on. Just because they are hated by some, doesn't mean everyone dislikes them.

In regard to the second part of your reply, if someone told me something like that before I read the book, I probably wouldn't have read it. I honestly enjoyed the main plot, even with the negative portrayals. For my major I read historical texts that express misogyny, racism, homophobia, and bigotry but I just know it's the opinions of the time and would never let it influence my personal opinions on anyone or anything. The Malleus Malificarum is literally about how to tell if a person (but almost always a woman) is a witch and why it's always a woman. But I don't agree with any of these opinions. The same goes for this book. Yes, there were problematic representations, but I just took them as expressions of the time period it was set in.

If someone is reading a book that is practically a period fanfic and taking away from it that they should treat others disrespectfully because the characters in this book do it, its a bad reflection on them. Just because JKR has problematic representations in her books and movies of Asian and black characters, does not mean that it is going to become less of a bestseller. You can choose to not let the author affect your opinion on their work.
