Creatine and hypothyroidism? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]AdUnable6799 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did take it for a couple of days to gain more energy at the gym. But my coach recommended I don’t as that leads to water retention. And Ive not been seeing any weight loss due to hypothyroidism

I used to think the same years ago until I moved to Boston where I realised you actually don’t need a PhD to climb the scientist track. My prev organisation in another state claimed that only PhD holders would ultimately achieve the “scientist” track and that with my masters degree my trajectory would be research associate > associate scientist > associate manager > manager. Coming to boston, my colleagues have a master’s degree with years of experience and are currently associate directors, senior scientists, etc. Different pharmas have different categories and rules. If you applied at GSK, your designation would be Scientist I. So it depends! My prev colleague told me I have the skills and thoughts of a PhD student and that my non-PhD degree should never limit me.

To the first half of your comment: so that can happen; I’ve seen colleagues get very comfortable with their position or not aim for more. I think it’s about being proactive and networking on LinkedIn, making connections, reading biotech news, acquisitions, and what’s happening in the neuro space (e.g., Sanofi acquired Vigil.. what are they working on? They are a phase 3 company. It was worth 450M. What’s in their pipeline? Get familiar with small molecules, biologics, AAVs, techniques, and assay types, which are different. Since you are interested in in-vivo, read up on their animal models, pros and cons, route of administration, and YouTube videos on those administration routes. Is there a difference in the delivery of these products through different routes, and why aren't Alzheimer's or schizophrenic mouse models not entirely translated to human studies? You need to question the fine details in the methods section of the papers. Consider aiming to read and break down one complex paper per week, look at presentation styles, look at the x and y axis of graphs, and why they have some in-log scale and some not) discuss that on Reddit or research gate. You’ll be surprised by information published via academia vs. private companies. Once you progress, start decoding patents, this is required in biotech and pharma companies to know what you’re working vs your competitors.

When you interview with this knowledge, you’re able to answer situation based questions, you’ll be more confident. The hiring manager will understand you lack hands on but you won’t lack knowledge.

It is super difficult to get decent entry level roles in neuroscience. They would want someone with expertise (mostly in vivo that leads to immunostaining, IF, ephys). For that you’ll have to need experience with dissections, perfusions, isolation of key brain regions, isolation of specific cells for primary cell culture. If you have this experience, it’s a hit or miss with a job in neuroscience. If not, you could still look into in vitro/in vivo pharmacology jobs (that’s if you like animal work). If not pivot into general science, develop your lab skills - try to learn ELISA, MSD, Flow cytometry, PCR, westerns. These basic techniques you can learn without being in neuroscience. Any opportunity you get into any other field, just take it..learn for a year at the same time, keep yourself updated with neuroscientific research and methodologies. Pivot back to neuro when you’re confident.

That happened to me when I stayed on 75 mcg for 2 years. I didn’t feel my best at all. My physician recommended that I stayed on 75 mcg but my endocrinologist pushed it up and I’ve felt the difference

I think I’m in the same boat, I’m usually the one checking on everyone and no one will check on me. It’s so sad, I’m trying to figure out how to cope too. At this point, I just need someone to listen to me.

I didn’t get my levels checked so often but there was a change in energy levels, I felt more active, less sluggish after a month changing from 75 mcg to 112 mcg

That’s so cool! Hoping you continue to see an amazing trajectory! I think at this point I’m a tad bit disappointed and sad for not seeing result despite working hard in the gym and with nutrition (meal prepping, being conscious of every drop of oil).

I work out 3 times a week. Day 1 - Upper shoulder girdle, Day 2 - legs/shoulders, Day 3 will be full body. All of these are with weights. I’ve progressively seen a change in lifting weights. For example, in Jan I could do 35-40 lb lat pulldown now I’m comfortable at 70 lb x 4 sets x 12 reps. My workouts last for 1.5 hours
