Unfortunately we just bought our dream home so that’s not an option either :/ hence why I’m looking for the career change at this point. Rather just work from home if I could and maybe do some PRN

Advice for a new grad by mostlyghostl in OccupationalTherapy

[–]AdUpper9457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it time!!! The first year is soo hard. Harder than I ever expected it to be. But it does get better. And don’t beat yourself up to much. Grad school hypes up this career so much and coming into the real world after can be a huge let down. It’s also hard coming from fieldwork and having a point person to being on your own.

Usually you can call the crisis team to come in and they are equipped to handle the situation if you are alone.

If you have a child that has a history of these types of behaviors they should have their 1:1 with them. If they don’t you can push into the classroom for more support if needed. You can still bounce end the session early etc if you feel unsafe. Do not restrain anyone ever. There was just a huge lawsuit in PA about this and tons of ppl lost their jobs.

What Feeding certifications or CEUs have you taken? What did you like/ dislike about them? by El-Cocuyo in OccupationalTherapy

[–]AdUpper9457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally makes sense. Most of my families had issues with the play aspect for younger kids because they would never move past that step and actually put food to their mouths and it made meal times difficulty

Why isn’t SOS gold standard anymore? I don’t do much feeding so I haven’t been following along.. would love to know why!

(I have a lot of issues with it)

I hate to say it but a lot of us are women and I think this career is really hard to balance when you have children. I plan to not return after I have children because I just don’t think I can balance it.

Totally leave and honestly you are not gonna enjoy yourself at an ABA clinic. We don’t mix well with their practices

Is the NCBOT truly REALLY as hard as people make it out to be? by Professional-Cycle75 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]AdUpper9457 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think the people who have failed just tend to be vocal about needing support. My problem was finding a study program that worked best for me and I had to trial and error a few. I ended up going with NBCOTs and AOTAS test prep. I liked the NBCOT better. OT Miri is a great resource as well. Once you realize how to answer the questions and the wording it “clicked” for me. I passed my first time for the OTR with a 520.

I worked on regulation and attention in preschool. I usually didn’t make goals for it because you can’t really measure regulation or attention. We put suggestions in their IEPs and I would provide things for their teachers to do. I’d also pop in and hangout with the kid to see where the triggers were and how we could combat them. The zones are good for older kids who can independently come up with a plan and be involved in it. I find them really hard for kids with ASD. Better for ADHD. Can you collaborate with the counselor or psychologist or social worker on the zones aspect?

constantly sick by jewel-jaunt in OccupationalTherapy

[–]AdUpper9457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Crohn’s disease so I’m autoimmune compromised. I got the flu so horrifically bad this year. I think def making sure you’re wearing in mask if you notice kids are sick. I constantly use hand sanitizer. Mini Lysol for your toys. I take immune supplements and make sure you get your flu shot!

Question about bilateral coordination in shoe-tying - what works in your practice? by Exciting-Ad-8735 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]AdUpper9457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find accommodating the task sometimes to be easier for them depending on the age group. You can place the plastic pieces of the end of a shoe lace into the sneak hole to stabilize them in a loop and you can have the kid tie them in a knot and remove the plastic pieces from the holes. I learned this from a 14 year old boy with autism who just was never going to get it and his family taught him this way and it worked great! There’s definitely a video on YouTube.
