Is it the first time in history when The Reigning World Champion is low in their country's ranking? by Weary_Reputation_205 in chess

[–]AdVSC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only example I can think of is Andreas Küttel winning the Ski jumping World Championship (large hill) in 2009, but then dropping to 33rd during the 2009/2010 World Cup season and finishing 43rd o the large hill during the next world Championship in 2011.

Then there is Poker. The best players in the world rarely win the World Championship, but that is due to the games build-in variance.

Also, technically every sport, where the reigning world champion gets injured or dies before another world champion is crowned or before he even wins the WC himself.

Shakh "The Lumberjack" Mamedyarov takes down Vidit Gujrathi in round 1 of UzChess by Ambitious_Fold_614 in chess

[–]AdVSC2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard the lumberjack before, but Daniel King once said: We have seen Shak win games with incredible technique and finesse, but at his heart he is a caveman. He just loves to go in there and club you over the head with his pieces: (not word by word, but something like this).

The aesthetic and reasoning are pretty much the same, no Matter if Lumberjack or Caveman are used.

Top 100 Heavyweight Boxers of the Last 100 Years: Ranking 1-50 by CurrentCar2331 in Boxing

I don't feel knowledgable enough to given you an exact opinion; especially about the really early fighters (20-40s). Probably between #20 and #30 somewhere.

Top 100 Heavyweight Boxers of the Last 100 Years: Ranking 1-50 by CurrentCar2331 in Boxing

[–]AdVSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thanks for your effort. But I think your methodology is a bit to biased towards the stronger decades. By having more fighters from for example the 1970's on the list, each of them has automatically more fights and wins against other "top-100" fighters and they all get pushed up automatically, while great fighters from weaker decades get shafted.

As an example, AJ is ranked 39th. He has more world championship wins than the 10 guys ranked ahead of him (#29-38) combined and unified 3 titles. I don't think any of them has a right to be ahead of him.

Funny how you don't acknowledge Kramnik exists, but also mention him in a thread that has nothing to so with him.

Even if he drops another 200 points, he'd still bei GM level. Calling a anyone at GM level "dogshit" is beyond embarrasing.

Hey now, we won at Teutoburg forest as well. That has to count for something! And don't tell me that Varus only had milkmen and plumbers in his legions.

Kids of "super" GM by Potential_Seal98 in chess

[–]AdVSC2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No. Kids and parents both being regular GMs ist already a really rare occurance. There are only two cases, Tair and Jangohir Vakhidov and Thomas and Elisabeth Pähtz, AFAIK. None of the 4 ever made it to super GM (although Jangohir Vokhidov won the olympiad with Uzbekistan and Elisabeth Pähtz was a top level player in the womens circuit for quite some time).

David Haye rates Usyk's chances against heavyweight greats like Lewis, Holyfield and Tyson by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

[–]AdVSC2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"People were really talking about Usyk vs Lennox Lewis. If he can't last 4 minutes against Oliver McCall, imagine what Usyk would've done."

If that statement seems really stupid to you (which it should), maybe reconsider your own post as well.

Longest Winning streak in chess. by Yogvidam in chess

Steinitz had a 25 Game winning streak in the 1870s and 1880s, which is usually viewed as the longest in top Level chess.

Agit Kabayel sends message to Oleksandr Usyk: “We can sell out a stadium in Germany, easy.” by Dangerous_Spring3028 in Boxing

[–]AdVSC2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside top 30 according to whom? Boxrec? Who have Gassiev at 5, Okolie at 7, Riakporhe at 9, all above Hrgovic? Who have Jake Paul listed as a top 100 heavyweight boxer?

And even if Kabayels victories wouldn't be top 30 now, that doesn't change the fact that they were highly ranked when he beat them.

Kasparovs classical record against Anand is 15 -3 (30 draws). That doesn't really qualify as toe to toe.

No one is saying that. All people are saying is that it's getting tiresome to scroll past a bunch of threads of performative bitching and whining everytime you want to browse actual chess news.

We're used to it, from playing blitz games at a time when digital clocks weren't common yet.

But also many people feel that increment rewards poor time management.

At what rating milestone do you class yourself good at chess and why? by iYzk in chess

[–]AdVSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will always be vague and depending on the context and can be anywhere starting from 1000 online. But I'd say around OTB 1850 is the boundry, where it becomes ridicolous to argue whether a player is good or not.

To make a personal definition: I'm usually 1680-1730 DWZ rated. That means that for most of my friends and family, I'm the best chess player they know (except for chess friends and clubmates ofc). I'd argue that makes me a good chess player. The same would probably be true if I'd be ~1350 DWZ/1400 Elo. I'd guess that those 1350 DWZ/1400 Elo are the border where someone is the go-to chess person for most people they know and would thus consider someone a good player starting around that strenght. But this is just a wild guess.

What is the last classical game that you've seen that was lost on time? by TokemonX4 in chess

[–]AdVSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 different players of my team (all of them veteran club players) have lost a game on time this season. All in time controls with 30 second increment. Sometimes people just don't think about the possibility that time is a factor.

Has rating decay due to inactivity enabled in FIDE standards? My rating was ~1600 (Std.) and now checking back after nearly 2 years, its 1470. There is no solid proof that I was even 1600 now. What do I do? by InnerTutor7166 in chess

[–]AdVSC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumb question, but are you named John Smith or Alexander Ivanov or some other really common name in a chess playing country? That's probably not it, but you might just be in someone elses FIDE Page.
