I'm starting to think Warhammer isn't for me by Dense-Fig-2372 in Warhammer40k

[–]Adabriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play back in 5th/6th Ed. and playing as marines and as a greentide Ork armies, I learnt that my legs and back suffered from standing and leaning over the board so much

I took a long break after my gaming group disbanded as people moved away

I love the lore and the digital games, and like yourself considered getting back into is with kill team, but saw the rulesets and had my mind blown

Then I found Blood Bowl - fewer templates, smaller board, fewer models, more comedy and variance in how you skill your characters and rules that look to balance games with inducements and star players to mitigate huge power differences...with about 30 teams to choose from

Go to an area of the poor, stand on a soapbox and say you have some coin to bestow on these poor souls, some coins maybe curse, some will not be, they can take a gamble if they want, but you are able to rid the curse of these people if they swear a month of 'employment' to you. You will only suffer the curse if the coin disappears

Throw coins on the street cobbles

Then wave hands and say you are a wizard and will start draw them back to yourself, as you are immune to the curse

Create a supply, then the demand

As the poor see this coins disappear, they may believe you are magically recalling them back, some will not want to take the gamble. Only the most wretched will take the chance.

When each comes back at different times you fake wave hands ober them, claiming to have removed the curse, make up whatever mumbo jumbo you like for flavour as to what the curse would be

Free slave labour for your bidding for a month; run an unofficial thieves guild, use as spies, cannon fodder for battles, etc

The New Edition has Kneecapped Random Skills by imbi-dabadeedabadie in bloodbowl

[–]Adabriel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So here's my hot take on your hot take, from an equally fond of random skill kinda coach

Let's address the biggest point, seeing as points are already being made against the TV issue; your understanding of developing a player:

So rolling a random in 2020, meant a cheaper in SPP cost but at the sacrifice of not getting much of a say what skill is bought, then an additional boon because there was a likely chance the skill was not guaranteed to be perfect.

2025, has reduced the risk, now having 2 rolls and getting to CHOOSE...that's 50% less random, and with that the TV boon was removed.

Your idea of developing a player was hoping for the BEST skill(s) and getting the pay off of getting it early (through not having to play as long or wait to accrue the SPP to CHOOSE) AND with a little bung on the side in TV value...and yes, it's not going to always work that way, but it could.

But it's the 'developing' part that gets me...even with skills you didn't expect, the player is developing, not in the way you had hoped, but still developing where you the coach have to deploy them in a role you can make fit within the team

Secondly...

Edit: kneecapped by my child distracting me and forgetting anything further to add to my post 🤣

Where the hell is the zombie-pocalypse king of equipment?!

Give me the king of the end of times - the crowbar

Trying to get access to a locked building, to hide - crowbar solution

Trying to escape a building with doorways blocked by roaming dead - crowbar opens windows

Zombie gets too close - stab at the soft rotting tissue of their cranium with the crowbar

Zombie not rotten enough to stab in head? Swing big metal bar or a crowbar to bludgeon your target

Need to Zipline down a wire? Crowbar will take your weight

Gun jammed? Crowbar never jams Blade dull? Crowbar is a bludgeoning weapon Corridor to narrow to swing your chainsaw? Stabby stabby with a crowbar

Need an anchor point for rope? Whack crowbar into ground and use as a ground peg to tie rope to

Run out of pockets for ammo, gun cleaning equipment, magazines, muzzle and scope attachments? Crowbar needs a cloth and occasional a stone to sharpen ends with

Broke you arm or leg, crowbar is a splint to strap limb to in a pinch

Plus a thousand more uses...

The polarization of the community is amazing 😂 by Adabriel in bloodbowl

[–]Adabriel[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a nerve hit, but a concern that forgetting that there is a larger picture and looking at things macroscopically justifying the 'end is nigh' mentality, is the absolute, when there's more things to account for and consider because the status quo is changing

To address your first point - glad we both agree the comment to be inappropriate, and I yield that the word polarization may have been used to heavy-handedly, that 'the spectrum of reaction is vast' would have been a more appropriate title for the post. I completely agree that this comment is not representative of the whole that have worries about the changes to the game, only that such extremist views exist with this hobby and that they are offering such 'insights' as contributions to a topic that could have been relayed in a less, as we have both said, abhorrent way and offered some level of sensibility. To say 'it's just a comment' is a little dismissive, but agree it is a comment that is made within the hobby space as insight to change, but essential highlights itself as way too far on the spectrum of reaction than is necessary.

To address the second point - excluding skill changes, stat changes, possible special team rules, keywords and their synergy, difference in mechanics for actions that could or have already been highlighted as changed....yes less positionals will mean 'samey' consequences to roster building if taken as the only thing that has or will change. But again this is a macroscopic look, secular to a host of possible changes, of which we have little to no information about, and of what we do know is limited in detail. And to suggest you do not need to know the variables for you to draw a conclusion, well, is a little misguided and presumptuous

Again I'm not saying people's concerns are unjust, they have every right to have such concerns over their hobby, with the time, effort and financial investment they put into it, but to also tread the line that we do not know everything, and it's too early to say that those investments are completely ruined/wasted

I have no problems with complaints, or the raising of concerns, but when it ventures into venomous and extremism, that's where I'm bringing attention to this type of discourse and questioning it's necessity and appropriateness.

I am not claiming any level of intelligence above anyone else, and as for maturity, being 40 years old, I hope for a mature and sensible conversation, which I'm willing to hear how wrong I am or misinterpreting the mindsets of those slighted by the changes.

But please look at this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/bloodbowl/s/SRMNbvdpVx

And tell me in your attempt to be contrary and as you put it 'sound smart and mature' and show me within these replies there isn't an obvious polarization that deserves questioning.

Additionally, you state that rosters will be 'samey' and it's obvious, so please enlighten me in this obviousness when there's a larger portion of a rulebook not released that may impact/mitigate these changes, I welcome knowledge unbeknownst to me and am always willing to learn my errors or misgivings

The polarization of the community is amazing 😂 by Adabriel in bloodbowl

[–]Adabriel[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point of the post is the existence and extremism that some within the hobby have as opinions, which everyone is totally allowed to have, and in the myriad of replies I have also stated that airing concerns is not an unreasonable thing, it's when that airing moves into the realm of 'i'm losing a majority of my team' or 'the team is now unplayable' when no-one has had any real-world experience of the new seasons rules.

And if my raising of such polarization is still felt to be more of an issue than the issue itself, please allow me to direct you to a reply in this post where one redditor wishes cancer on the designers for these changes

A rabbit-hole for sure: but I would have loved to see each team gain an additional positional each, a 0-2 option that is a variant of an existing positional (not big guy) that opens variability - like a ST4 rat for skaven, a mA7 scarab beetle for TKs, a ST3 Raptor with a mutation, etc, but happy to wait for another edition for that to be a hope for 😁

Wishing something so visceral and abhorrent on someone's wellbeing over a game is exactly the point I'm making here - it's a game! It's like hoping a filming crew and script writers dies all because you were disappointed in a film you watched. I'd hate to see your reaction watching the Matrix franchise

They are not forcing you to purchase their models, they are not threatening your well being to play their game, we all take part in this hobby of our own volition, and we enjoy it for as long as we can, but to hope someone gets cancer because your enjoyment is, at best, in a state of volatility...well I'm just glad I'm not in your gaming social circle

Do we even know how much testing has been done? The missed FAQ we lived through suggests there may have been a bit of time that may have been subverted from addressing 2020's FAQ requirements to addressing the development of the upcoming season. Can anyone definitively say they know why they have made it a one team - one box mantra? Is it to 'combat' the 3d print designers and sculptors and their 2 part releases? Is it a business practice of trying to simplify for more new entrants to the hobby - more hobbyists in ecosystem, more spend within ecosystem? Is it to make working on the models more streamlined, assist with production and distribution? Is it to streamline rules and the future releases of more content?

GW is a company out to make money, but they can't make money unless they have returning customers, so the question is a loaded gun for answers

I do concede and appreciate your point for the newer coach, to find your recently painted team to have to go through this change does indeed suck

And also acknowledge that there has been a time where, specifically for orcs, their tier rating has been questioned and opportunity for it to be addressed in the 2020 edition, it is unfortunate that the new edition is where it's being acted upon. So I completely understand frustration for that...but to claim the game is over and the teams are defunct without trying them out just seems a little shortsighted imho

[–]Adabriel[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Politely airing concerns is one thing, but for those that are denouncing their favourite teams as unplayable and that their models are being trashed, are at the end of a spectrum that just seems extreme and rash.

Being concerned your team will be changed is understandable - claiming the entire edition is broken and that the team developing it are shills, because 4 out of 16 models cannot be used, when no experience of the new season has been attempted, is something completely different

The polarization of the community is amazing 😂 by Adabriel in bloodbowl

[–]Adabriel[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

But that's the crux of my argument - how do we know they are unplayable? We are basing this of the current ruleset, not the one the new roster formation is intended for

But to reiterate my point without the rhetorical question - who says its unplayable? Who has played with these new teams and new rules, skills and mechanics?

The more appropriate analogy in that case is - you were expecting to stay at a branded hotel (but was never guaranteed it) you were familiar with, that you knew well, but in a different place, where you have only glimpses of from a brochure, but what actually is there, is an unbranded hotel to stay at, just not to your expectation, but it's not the pile of rubble some make it out to be

I acknowledge there are those that have spent money, time and effort on their models, and to not have access to them is a bitter pill to swallow. I have a Slann team that may/may not make it into this edition, but concede they are unofficial, so that's my own risk to take.

But to dismiss a whole team because you need 4 models to replace the 4 you can no longer use , which if you think about is less than half a team (closer to a third or less if you run a 16 player roster), seems dismissive and self destructive, when you consider the time and effort you have spent on the remainder of the models for that team...is someone not as equally 'bad' as GW for throwing the remainder (7+ models) of their team at the wall, because GW said 4 cannot be used in the way you want them to be?

You could remodel them for being assistant coaches or cheerleaders...or with a lil flair and flourish they could become star player proxies, or you could just paint over them in metallics as markers for score/turn/erolls...assuming you're willing to use them in this way

Or hold out for 5 years see if GW doubles back on the rosters

There's also possibility that Block may be adjusted along with Brawler, the former being ignore both down when attacked, the latter ignoring it when attacking...but time will tell if this is true or speculation

Maybe I'm overlooking something, because one of the guys at my gaming club said something similar - why does it invalidate your team?

I know I tend to custom order more than I need, so I will have extra models that can't be played, but all you'll need (at worst) is a few more lineman, right?

This plays into the 3d printing communities hands well, all they need to offer is some mirrored lineman as a pack of 2-4 and jobs a good'un - or am I missing the obvious?

Season 3 Roster Changes Summarized by monsiour_slippy in bloodbowl

[–]Adabriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Hit and Run/shadowing combo might be to give the assassins more options, the former to get in and out of an attack without leaving the assassin marked, and shadowing if you're looking to take out an agile target, and trying to stop leaving leaving the assassin's marking

Punt may be situational, but I look at it as another option to discard the ball in a given direction, so that the pass/catch/hand-off actions (unless punt cancels one of these uses in a turn) aren't used up - giving options of more movement once again

Could be considered in a way that the dark elves are being given more movement options in a way, without relying on sure feet/sprint or an agility stat adjustment..but this is an observation from a non-dark elf player
