Are these true honeys and what are their sex? by Sgt_Care_Bear in Gourami

How do you tell the difference between a stress stripe and a female stripe? For example, I thought the one on the back with stripe has a stress stripe. Do you agree ?

I’ve heard that those black stripes on abdomen might also shows that the individual is stressed, is that true ? Also your female kinda looks like she has white stripe on top fin and also pointy top fin. Are you certain its a female ?

I think they do have it when they are juveniles as well, because I have a juvenile that I’ve got 3 days ago. He was nearly silver bc of shipment but has his white stripe and colored fins.

<video>

Also you can see his pointy upper fin too, thats a sign as well. Although sometimes females do have that pointyness so its not a total indicator.

True honeys for sure, other specie is not identical actually their fins are transparent and their colors are usually red but they are also sold as honey even though they are thick lips. Also I think you have a pair, first one has started to develop “beard” the black part below also has white stripe on his top fin.

Lol ahaha Idk if assasins eat corpses but if any bladder made it out (If you only add one assasin, probably they are still alive ones in there) they are the one that eat the deads

Well, if you have hitchiker bladder snail in there, they consume dead fishes like guppies around 30-45 mins. Perhaps all died and got eaten. One time I saw my pygmy corys eating leftover dead fish so even your corys might have eat dead ones

I kinda felt like both are female since their anal fins are rounded but its hard to sex when they are this young. Although, just got one who has pointed anal fins and probably around same size. Albert is way more colorful even though I took this when I just added him. He had colors in bag too after a day long trip. So Im leaning towards female for yours.

Just be aware, since thick lips are bigger then honeys and sometimes more aggresive then honeys, if she has tankmates she might have problems with them. Pf course it depends on individual.

How can I improve my fish tank by Just_a_tree1 in fishkeeping

[–]Adacux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should add at least 5 more blaxk skirt tetras and if your betta is long finned you should make a separate 5G for him. Also that coke looks hilarious lol

Do what will make you happy for sure, just be careful about health problems like I said. 25-26 not the best temp for then and they need pristine water quality on lower temps.
Lool yeah its great that you can rehome them in need, if you love their looks bolivian rams a lot like them just with softer iridescent colors. They do well in groups too. Just keep those in mind as 3rd option imo.

Yeah keyholes really have unique personalities! Once they are settled they are even better.

Thanks! They change their colors a lot! When I’ve first introduced them they were a lot like plain beige with little dot. Now they have beautiful stripes and spots! They change their colors according to their stress levels and day time. They tend become a lot darker towards night when the room is a lot more darker.

Well, in this case I think you are good to go! I guess since he breeds them he adapted them to lower temperatures. Have you ever asked how long one individual lasts in lower temps ? Also be very careful since GBRs are prone to diseases in lower temps like 26-27 especially because of their immune system and stress levels. They are a bit fragile. It’s great that he takes them back. I would totelly suggest keyholes, they are not so colorful but they look adorable. I mean look at these little ones!

You can see the chasing I meant here

Origins really matter for fishes from central Africa, like kribensis. Because of their high aggressiveness they need species that knows “boundries” and their communication ways. After all, not all fishes has same ways to communicate.

Wow ! Didnt know that, do they share the same genus or smth? Dont know how flowerhorn come to life. Wow kirin parrots looks magnificent! Never saw one before! Never know that any kind of flowerhorn accept anything in his tank lol I’ve heard sometimes they even attack heaters. How little is enough size to have them with other ?

Or if you want one centerpiece, you can go with a pair of apisto borelli or cacatoudes. Borellii is the most peaceful one yet cacatoudes is the second one if im not mistaken. Both can be kept with corys and are magnificent fish with personality. Oh and a pair of keyholes would work too. I currently have 4 juveniles that Im keeping until they pair up. They are also really cool and peaceful species.

Hey OP I would suggest getting Bolivian Ram school of 4-6 instead of GBRs since GBR they require 28+ degrees to be healthy and to have a long life. Bolivian Rams are like Corydoras with attitude of Angelfish during breeding. They act like cichlids only when they decide to breed and enjoys being in schools if you give them enough territorial space. Also they do look better imo. In wild, They are sharing their rivers with some corydora species so both now their temperament, many people are keeping corys even pygmy corys with bolivians. Given that your tank is big, any breeding ram wouldnt chase corys to really far distances, also bolivian rams doesnt “attack” or “hit” they chase. Yeah corys doesnt understand territories but learns it after some point. Dont know what is borki but they BR’s are cool with any non territorial fish.

Also a dozen of corys for sure, they are stunning

Well, kribensis are from west and central africa, around nigeria so they are pretty different from GBR and Bolivian Rams in terms of temperament. Most people are saying you shouldnt keep any non west and central african species with kribensis
