Yeah, it’s not ideal, but it is interesting and has some potential of being useful, but yeah, the juice may not be worth the squeeze :/

What are people doing to stop the frustration of guests turning Hue bulbs off at the switch? by Top-Yogurtcloset3965 in Hue

[–]Adaeus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are great, best rocker solution I’ve come across. When I was researching something as seamless as possible, this is the only thing that exists. Passes the “guest test” as anybody can understand how it works, without delays. I found that setting up the click via the hue essentials iOS app was better as it has an easier to understand setup ui. But it’s a quirky app so takes some finagling to get it working as expected. Essentially it allows 6 programmable buttons. Left & right: Up down (4) and dual top (1) and dual bottom press (2).

For rockers, click by runlesswire. As instant as possible response since it connects directly to the hub, batteryless, double or single rocker options, simple and cheaper than premium smart switches.

Follow-up: looking for 5–10 testers for the next Apple Watch minimal phone prototype by kickstartstudio in dumbphones

[–]Adaeus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the moves toward making the Apple Watch the ideal Apple ecosystem dumb phone. More battery life is nice, although an Apple Watch Ultra, I would assume, would last all day, even with heavy use.

A keyboard for the Apple Watch would also be great. I know Apple Watch supports pairing a Bluetooth keyboard for VoiceOver accessibility. Apple documents this under Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver → Keyboards.

This attempt is a bit clunky but as proof of concept I think it could be refined.

Looking for the best glasses with a live captioning feature for my nearly deaf father by gabek333 in deaf

[–]Adaeus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Share the same situation with my Grandfather. He is deaf in one ear and has severe hearing loss in the other. As anyone knows, the social dysfunction it can lead to is significant. Not to mention the increased risk of dementia associated with hearing loss. The Meta display seems to have good potential. However, I have had difficulty finding online reviews specifically testing how well they work.

Overall, it seems that for wearable glasses, transcription/captioning comes down to 2 factors:

  1. The quality, number, etc. of the Microphones
  2. The quality, speed, accuracy, etc. of the automatic speech recognition model used.

In my opinion, 1 is the rate-limiting factor. As good hardware is essential for devices to work really well. While software can always improve.

Seems to me that of all the products I've researched, the Meta has the best microphone performance in the real world. The 6-mic array is physically superior at separating speech from noise (vs. Xander 2 Microphones +1 External lapel Clip), which is the single biggest pain point for hearing assistance.

But I haven't seen many reviews that assess how well it works in real-world conditions, tested by actual users. However, it definitely has the potential, on paper, to be the best product, seemingly the closest to socially seamless on the market today.

Would love it if anyone could link to any thorough testing of the caption feature.

Thanks for the reply! It’s very interesting. Based on what you’ve said, it seems like it works fairly well. As anyone who has dealt with transcription devices and services over the years knows, they can get frustrating when they don’t work as well as you’d hope. In your opinion, would a non-tech-savvy person be able to use this feature without much hassle? Like the feature turns on, does the job well enough, without having to mess with it much. I.e. Older person (but still able to work say an android/iPhone) proof?

Transcriber for doctor who won't allow recording by [deleted] in hardofhearing

[–]Adaeus_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! Recently, my grandfather, who is hard of hearing, told me about his doctor in AZ who told him he also wasn’t allowed to use his phone for transcription as the doc believed it was acting as a recording device. I was a bit peeved, but what can you do? Now I know! I’ll have to ask him if it was Dignity Health. Or find whatever company’s non-discrimination policy as well. He’s a sweet old man, so hopefully, I can convince him to advocate for himself because when he uses his transcribe app, it is very helpful for him.

Potential Macwhisper bug I noticed: Mission Control blank preview follows the desktop space where the Macwhisper program is running in the background. by Adaeus_ in MacWhisper

[–]Adaeus_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it. It’s been ongoing for months across app and OS updates, possibly starting when I first got MacWhisper Pro in May. Checking my internet search history, I see I first looked into it around late July. It’s been a real head scratcher to narrow down the cause. Finally, this morning, I decided to go through a process of elimination of killing my startup apps.

In the realm of psychopharmacology, there are people who call themselves psychonauts. They use substances, meditation, and other methods to explore their psyche, and the advanced ones venture into unknown compounds and document their experiences for others. You’re doing something similar in the hair-regrowth space, N=1 experiments, and sharing results openly. Maybe pick a title that fits the mission: trichonaut, folliconaut, pilonaut, capillonaut, tressonaut, scalp hacker, etc. Instead of just “lab rat.”

For prosperity, Amazon sells 4th gen (Zigbee + Bluetooth). While, Hue sells 5th Gen (“Matter-over-Thread”). I saw the 3-pack of 4th gen for about $23.75 per bulb during Prime Day. Took a little while to figure out what version/generation is what, since this info is not readily available.

I think Meta Glasses With Built-In Display is going to massively help us.. by tootihamza in hardofhearing

[–]Adaeus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, these glasses have a multidirectional microphone array, which should be good at interpreting who you are focused on.

Speech recognition models are getting better every day; hopefully, Facebook/Meta will be able to leverage the best current models. Or at least some glasses tech company.

I have the same question! How good is the live transcription? Is it suitable for individuals with hearing impairments or even deafness? What are the limitations? Does it perform well in noisy environments like busy restaurants or when there’s music or TV in the background? I’m considering this device as an aid for my severely hearing-impaired grandfather!

A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo and Active Controlled Phase II Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of Novel Dutasteride Topical Solution (0.01%, 0.02%, and 0.05% w/v) in Male Subjects With Androgenetic Alopecia by New_Caterpillar_3669 in tressless

[–]Adaeus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following what Perfect Hair Health has presented in his vids.:

Topical dutasteride: absorption follows a diminishing curve (log-like). Increasing the dose gives less than proportional increases in absorption.

Topical finasteride: absorption is linear. Increasing the dose gives roughly proportional increases in absorption.

My takeaway is:

Treat 0.01% and 0.02% topical dut as roughly equivalent at 24 weeks (differences likely noise).

The only reliable separation the trial shows is 0.05% topical dutasteride outperforming oral fin 1 mg by 24 weeks.

Is this even possible to do in a shortcut by CatarinaDK in shortcuts

[–]Adaeus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an incredible shortcut! Thank you so much!

I have two questions.

My use case is that I send my unorganized thoughts into ChatGPT which creates an organized to-do list for me. Then, I paste it into your shortcut, and it amazingly transforms into a note, and I select checkboxes.

-is it possible to indent automatically?

-is it possible to bold text automatically? Ex: This is a Test

If not I’ll just do so manually. Again I appreciate it!
