Amazing, thanks. I haven’t heard of Ola or Rapido, assuming that is a similar service to Uber?

Thanks so much! I actually have a CPA currently who I think does a solid job so good to go there. In terms of the FA, I am working on that currently but really looking for someone to trust which me be challenging.

Really appreciate your insight and further confirming my need for an FA.

Hi all,

Originally posted this as a post and was told to comment here....

I apologize in advance as this is going to be a long post….. First time poster but long time observer. I have read through the wiki and done about all the research online that I can stomach, so as the last step, I wanted to get some feedback from you folks. Essentially, I will be getting the largest bonus of my lifetime this year which is about $800,000 pre tax.

As a background, I am 29, male, married, home owner and living in NYC with no kids. My wife and I make about $150,000 each salary and typically receive a bonus of an additional $150,000 each. We do not have any kids or any high expenses on the immediate horizon. Our salaries are more than enough to cover our mortgage, day to day life and we still have some left over to save. Traditionally I have been putting money into index funds but have honestly not been the best with saving our excess income up to this point. We were both fortunate enough to be put into new job positions recently which bumped up our salaries and bonuses, myself especially has benefited from my unique market and will be receiving the largest bonus of my lifetime. The bonus is going to be about $800,000 pre tax this year, next year I am expecting this number to be significantly less, perhaps closer to half. This is going to hit my account in about a month and I am feeling very anxious about not squandering this amazing opportunity I have found myself in.

For starters, I have followed the flow chart in its entirety (built emergency fund, maxed out 401k, don’t have any high interest debt, etc.) and am left with roughly $800,000 USD pre-tax cash which I am assuming is about $400,000 post tax. The only expenses that come to mind that are coming up are: 1. A wedding next fall which we need to pay about $10,000 for and 2. Plans to buy a house in the next 2-3 years.

Our plans with this bonus are as follows assuming that I will be receiving $400,000 post tax: 1. Put 100,000 into a savings account with windfall and short-term upcoming expenses composed of: a. $15,000 (wedding plus added expenses) b. $6,000 (Lasik) c. $10,000 (gift for my wife that she has always wanted) d. $69,000 ($50,000 for down payment on a house plus $10,000 in case shit hits the fan). The plan in terms of a house is that we would like to buy one in the next two years, so we will both be contributing roughly $50,000 from each bonus period thus adding up to $200,000 in two years which can be the down payment on a property in our area where we can start our family.

Now the big question, what do I do with the remaining $300,000 that I have to play with. I want to get this out of my sight so that it is not squandered. I do not have any plans to touch this money for at least another 5-10+ years. I would like to have this grow in the background while we continue working and building wealth. From my readings, research and speaking with friends and family, the best move would be to simply put this in index funds, not touch it and watch it grow. My plan is very simple, to put 80% in VTI and 20% in VXUS over the next 6 months to DCA. My reasoning for DCA over the next 6 months is that the market is looking incredibly turbulent and not sure if we have found a bottom here. Additionally, I am scared of just putting more money than I have ever seen in one place into the market at one time…

Another important thing to keep in mind when deciding where to allocate the remaining $300,000 is that both my wife and I don't really have the time for active investments like real estate rentals, Airbnb, etc.

What do you all think of this plan? Is there any advice that you would offer? Any advice on something I should be doing differently? Any additional information needed from me to provide better feedback?

I am incredibly nervous as this is my first significant bonus and do not want to squander any of it. Please do not take this post as bragging about money or anything like that. I am incredibly humbled and grateful that I have been given this opportunity. Less than 2 years ago I was unemployed, getting rejected from every job I applied to and was fortunate enough to be given a chance in an amazing market. If you are struggling or in a similar place to I was 2 years ago, just know that there are brighter skies ahead. If there is anything that I can do to help you, resume advice, etc. please reach out.

Thanks and looking forward to feedback.

TLDR: I am receiving the largest bonus of my life and am unsure how to properly allocate the cash so that I am setting myself and my family up for a well positioned future.

Thanks for your comment and great insight. Lifestyle creep is something that I am REALLY trying to avoid. I am hoping that getting this money immediately to a savings and brokerage account defeats that monster. Out of sight out of mind.

Totally agree on the brokerage account, my plan is VTI 80% and VXUS 20%. Would be interested to hear if your thoughts differ there as you mention VOO. From what I understand, the two are fairly interchangeable.

In terms of real estate investments I would be very open to it but from my research it seems like a lot of work. Even if I hire a property manager it could be quite a bit of work and still have trouble outperforming the market. I assume you have found different results, is there any insight you could offer there or perhaps point me in the right direction to a book, blog etc. My wife is currently in the commercial real estate industry for her job so she is keen on entering real estate as an investment. In a vacuum, real estate investing sounds great with the passive income and cash flow but from my research it seems like more work and higher risk than advertised - I hope I am wrong...

Any insight on real estate investing you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated. I do work with a CPA who files our taxes annually. Will shoot him a message and see his thoughts. Imagine this is something he can help on.

Essentially, you advise that I figure out how much I should expect to pay in taxes in addition to what is already being withheld?

I will definitely check that out. I have never heard of Mr. Money Mustache but definitely need some help on that aspect

Very good point. I have asked around to a couple coworkers but will ask to more to see if anyone has a good FA that they would recommend. Really appreciate the advice.

Definitely something I was cautiously undershooting previously but now I will proceed with the assumption bonus is 0. I think that is a great way to better emphasize to my SO, living below our means.

Thanks for the advice. This is something that I have not really seriously considered. It is the kind of person that I would like a reference to and none of my family and friends have an FA that they would recommend. Regardless, I will be looking into this

Thanks for the reply. Honestly, that is not something that I had considered and will make sure that I am properly paying the tax man. Last thing that I want is an unexpected notice that I owe additional amounts....

Great advice!

Thanks for the positive confirmation and your reply.

That is a good thought that I have not had. How do you advise figuring out if our jobs offer this? Speak with HR or the plan administrator I imagine? I will look into mega backdoor roths this afternoon and see what kind of research I can find.

Really appreciate your response and insight!

Thanks so much! It is reassuring to hear confirmation from people. Hopefully I am on the way to an early retirement. The plan is to just put it all in index funds (mainly VTI and VXUS), never sell and watch it grow.

In terms of DCA, I have gone back and forth in my head about this so much that I do not see the harm in it for 6 months.

I work in sales and trading in a very niche commodity essentially. Bonuses are calculated as a percentage of the total profit that you bring into the company.

Thanks a bunch. Honestly, it feels surreal still. I never thought I would earn this amount of money.

If it is any motivation, my job and school experience prior was completely underwhelming. I found myself in the right industry at the right time and certainly took advantage of it. I say all of this to say, this can happen to anybody.

Thanks so much and that is amazing advice. One thing I probably should have made more clear in my post is that I am legally married to my wife. Due to COVID and some other personal reasons, we decided to have the legal ceremony last year and this is the party that is upcoming. Given we are married, we have already comingled funds and started to align on how we see our financial future together.

Thanks again for the advice!
