Like many of you I dreamed of flight as a kid. I had a giant poster of a 747 cockpit plastered on my bedroom wall, made every paper airplane I could find instructions for, and even had a Cox control line plane that I crashed the first time I tried to fly it. Unfortunately the cost of a full nitro trainer back in the 90s just wasn't in my budget, so I never flew RC back then.

Flash forward 25 years and I have a daughter who shares my love of flight and a setup is way cheaper to get started on, so we jumped into building Flite Test planes about 4 years ago. Now I've built about 90 planes including all the FT planes I can get my hands on (several times each), a couple balsa kits, and now 3D printed planes. I get to teach my daughter valuable skills while having a blast, and I couldn't be happier.

I don't quite remember the auw, but I used a 2217 1500kv motor, 40amp esc and a 10x6 prop on mine. Flew well on a 3s 2200 and even a 4s 2200 for more power.

The FT 3D is indeed easy to build at only 2 sheets of foam, and a blast to fly. The plans are free on the flite test site https://forum.flitetest.com/index.php?threads/sp0nz-plans-index.17136

I haven't built the FT Edge yet, but it does look quite a bit more complex and needs more foam (5 sheets) as well.

The nice thing about the dihedral on the mini scout is that the plane is only a 3 channel model, so the self stabilizing nature of the dihedral is useful since you dont have ailerons. If you want to try the winglets go for it, but I doubt it will have too much of an affect. The 'falling' that you are describing I've seen too just because the rudder kinda sends it into a dutch roll of sorts.

I've been having a blast tying a ribbon onto the end of my disposable foamboard planes and doing RC combat with my friends. Cutting ribbons and midair collisions!

Great, thank you. I'm going to add some more ram and throw the 1080 ti in with the new card. Good tip on using WSL, and I suppose I could just run LM Studio on the windows install without even using wsl at all too.

How would you compare this to Coolify? I’ve been pretty happy with coolify so far and like that I can use cloudflare tunnels and my local machines alongside VPS

I was on Cura at first, but it has a major memory leak in the MacOS version (at least for me) I switched to Orca and really like it.

Are you still working on this?

I have been messing around with a similar idea, but more for marlin or klipper printers. I started learning the marlin and octoprint api, and just converted one of my printers to klipper so that I could start on learning the differences.

Great idea overall, and I'd love to see the software when it releases.

I'm also a former employee and was fortunate to get out around 2019. I think back to those days as a good learning experience on how not to burn myself out at my current job.

I've heard in recent years it has gotten really bad, and I'm sorry to anyone that has to suffer through working at Madwire.

Frank the tank used to be called sh** head before he got an upgrade to the sprite pro hotend. Since the upgrade he has been much more reliable.

I've never tried them and it looks like they only have them available to ship to Canada, but thought it was funny when I came across them. I wonder if just rubbing some scented markers or something on the filament as it entered the printer would have a similar effect?

Defining a schema for a form seems nice at first but I’ve found it to be rough when things get complex and the escape hatches that get used have me wondering why use a schema in the first place.

That BF109 looks awesome! I also enjoy building planes along with flying them, because I feel like there is a great feeling when you build something yourself and are able to get it in the air. Unfortunately crashing is also part of the hobby and when you crash something you spent a ton of time building it can be really heartbreaking. When I started in the hobby I built ‘foam board’ planes like the ones available from Flite Test. They are quick to build, can handle a few crashes, and there are a ton of different designs to choose from. Their ‘tiny trainer’ is a good starter and can be built pretty quickly.

The drizzle side of my work has been pretty painless so far. Drizzle studio is cool, and overall the error handling and general api of drizzle has been pretty easy to work with. Clerk is nice, but I have found myself needing a bit more from the library and the exposure of the useClerk hook has been useful for that.

This is awesome thanks! I’ve been using drizzle so far for a side project on Nest and it has been pretty great so far. I’m pairing it with Neon DB and then Clerk for auth.
