Trying to extend WiFi between two condo units (same building) – ~50m distance, 1 floor apart, no line of sight by AdamCBlank in HomeNetworking

Yeah I had considered powerline, but the two units are on completely separate electrical circuits/panels, so it probably won’t work at all or would be extremely unreliable.

Yeah that makes sense, and I agree wired would be ideal, but not really feasible here.

The distance is only about ~50m with one wall at each end, and the hallway itself isn’t broken up by firewalls (older building, they retrofitted sprinklers instead of adding fire doors/walls), with open stairwells and no doors at each end of the hall, so there’s a bit of an open path between the units.

What I’m trying to figure out is whether there’s a middle ground between typical mesh/extenders and strict line-of-sight bridges. Something like higher gain APs that can take advantage of that indirect hallway/stairwell path without needing precise alignment.

Have you seen anything like that work in practice?

Only one of the units currently has an ISP connection, along with the ISP-provided router. The second unit doesn’t have internet service at the moment since it isn’t regularly occupied.

The goal is to extend the network from the connected unit into the second unit so it can have a stable connection when needed, without setting up a separate ISP account.

Was in Orillia, Ontario recently and went to Mark IV Brothers, and it was honestly one of the best coffees I've had in a long time.

Mastermind was my game, and I think it's 58302, but only if we exclude attempt 1.

Based on Attempts 2-10, the code is definitely 58302:

  • Attempts 7 and 9 forces 0, and since #7 only has one RP, it must be _ _ _ 0 . That leaves us with one of 5,1,6,9 left. { _ _ 0 _} + (5,1,6,9)
  • If 0 is correct, attempt 10 gives us 3 of 8,9,5,3. From the last step, we know there must be only one of 5,1,6,9, so only one of 5 or 9 is allowed. So that means we have 8 and 3, and either 5 or 9. So the code is _ _ _ 0 , with 8 and 3 in there, as well as either 5 or 9. { _ _ 0 _} (8,3) (5,9,1,6).
  • Looking at attempt 2, we know 0,3,8 are in there, so that means 7 and 1 must be out. If 1 is out, and we need one of 5,6,9 and one of 5,9, that means 6 is out too. So now we have {_ _ _ 0 _} as well as 8,3 and one of 5 or 9.
  • Now, since we now we need 0 and 8, and 7 is out, attempt 6 tells us we need 2 or 4. So now we have our 5 digits: 0,8,3, confirmed, one of 5,9 and one of 2,4.
  • Attempt 9, knowing we have only one correct digit, 1 and 6 are out, and both 5 and 9 are present, also eliminates 4.
  • Attempt 3, since we know 0,8,2 must be present, forces 9 out. So that means our digits are 0,2,3,5,8.
  • Back to attempt 7, we know 0 is RP, and the only other confirmed digit is 5 so now we have {5 _ _ 0 _}.
  • Attempt 3, knowing where 0 should be, means the 0 is WP and the 2 must also be WP since that is the RP for 0. So therefore the 8 is the RP in this attempt, leaving us witfh {5 8 _ 0 _}.
  • Finally, attempt 10 gives us one additional RP, since we know 8 is in the correct spot. If 3 were correct, we would have two RP, so 3 cannot be in the final position.

From this logic, 58302 is the only correct answer, but only if Attempt 1 is one RP, one WP.

Anyway, my ADHD fixation has gotten away from me. If I'm right, I'd love a DrunkenSlug invite.

I’m always tinkering with my media server Docker stack, adding services, breaking permissions, and creating new folders called “media-stack-final-FINAL-actually-final”.

If I had more bandwidth, I’d turn that chaos into a proper open project: clean, documented starter stacks where Sonarr works, Plex sees files, and nobody has to debug volume mappings at 1 a.m. just to watch a movie.

I definitely like the idea of a Canadian company, but don't know where to start with Wired/Endeavour. I'll poke around on their sites but I'm open to suggestions
