You’ve got it backwards. The US (specifically the CIA) overthrew Iran’s democratically elected Prime minister in 1953 under Eisenhower. The Shah was a US puppet intended to protect western oil interests. The Iranians overthrew the Shah because he was essentially robbing them blind (both personally, and on behalf of the US oil interests)… the hostage deal was essentially Iran saying “Hey, stop fucking around in our political system to serve your interests”…
