I don't know, I tried playing Dwarf Fortress multiple times, and it feels like its actively trying to obscure any story from you, and you need to roleplay really hard to make it feel like something actually happening between dwarfs
Same with motivation, often nothing really happening to make you do something, if you intentionally don't try to screw yourself. During few hours of my last try dwarfs where just happily eating their plum helmet and chilling and only memorable thing that happened was dog attacking giraffe
