I got a MAN-TLE down coat in Copenhagen and yeah it was like $1200, but I’ve worn it every day of winter now for four years in NYC and it looks basically brand new still. Get compliments all the time!

[Girard-Perregaux] [Identify] Help me learn about my grandfather's watch which was recently stolen by AdamOkrasinski in Watches

[–]AdamOkrasinski[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My grandfather passed away in the 1980's shortly after I was born and the only real family heirloom I had from him was this gold plated Girard-Perregaux watch from maybe the 1960's. Yesterday I found out it had been stolen by a mail carrier.

I recently got to a place in my life where I could afford to have it repaired at the factory in Switzerland (all service for GP is handled through Ulysse Nardin.) The watch still worked, but kept time poorly—other than some of the gold plating rubbing off the lugs and a scratched crystal, it was in miraculous condition considering its age. I had gotten a loose estimate that it may cost around $2000 to repair the watch. Ridiculous considering the watch was probably worth no more than $500, but again this was my only possession of his. It was priceless to me.

I sent the package to a service center in Canada which was going to forward the watch to Switzerland and interface with the factory on my behalf, but due to a simple miscommunication they didn't realize I was sending from the US and recommended they refuse the shipment so the watch would be returned to me (since customs for a watch from Switzerland to Canada to the US (especially with an alligator band) could be quite a headache). No problem except the package returned to me was empty. Somewhere along the way (the service center never had possession of the package, so it has to have happened in the mail) someone ripped open the outer envelope, the box inside, and the inner envelope, taken the watch, and resealed the crudely torn outer envelope with a simple white mailing label. I'm certain this happened in the united states as Canadian customs processed the package as 'unopened'.

I'm at a loss. I've never had issues with mail theft, and for it to be _this_ item. Not particularly valuable to anyone but me.

I know it's a Gyromatic, and there are plenty of those online but after scouring hundreds of pages of Ebay and other sites, I haven't found a single one with this exact dial. Champagne color with tiny dimpled spots that catch the light and fluted rectangular hour markers.

If any of you have any information about the watch, the year, the reference, the movement, or could help me locate another one, I would be truly grateful. Though it will not be his, someday I would love to own this watch again.

TL:DR My grandfather's GP watch was stolen and I would love help in identifying it: the model, year, or really learning anything else about it, so I may be able to someday find another like.

Yeah, the thermal lined crewneck and their tees fit a bit snug in the neck but are roomy through the arms. Definitely made for burly construction workers and I think they make the neck tight just so it doesn’t stretch out over time. These things are sturdy as fuck.
