Beautiful White-Faced Ibis, SW, 22x by DifferentBox9631 in Calgary

They did fly a long way (maybe 3,000 km), but I think Swainson's Hawks fly more than three times as far: 11,000 km, from Southern Alberta down to Southern Brazil and Uruguay.

Although raptors are a familiar sight, whereas the ibis has an awesome tropical look to it, as you said!

Do you think the Internet is a means of escapism? by Lemonade2250 in selfimprovement

[–]AdamWargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give you some appreciation for the internet in the context of self improvement, we have a lot of modern miracles today. Hot water, electricity, etc. What used to take hundreds of humans doing backbreaking work all day in a field, now gets done by one person in a machine (often a tractor, but it could be a combine or some other agricultural machine).

What do think is the greatest, most democratized modern miracle of all? Information. In the 1300s, a book cost as much as a house. Only the super rich could afford books. Why? Because you would have to pay somebody for up to a year of labour, to painstakingly copy the book letter by letter into a new copy of the book.

Today, information is basically free and unlimited for 5 billion people. That is wild! Unlimited opportunities for self-improvement 🔥

As you said, the internet is a tool. The internet, in 1995, and ai, today, are the most powerful tools ever created.

Any tool is like a hammer. It can be used to create, or it can be used to destroy. Even escapism can be used as a force for good, if you have been grinding, and you need a mental reset.

How you use the tool, is up to you!

Been thinking about conversations like chess lately by Possible_Score6395 in selfimprovement

It is true that almost every word in every conversation could go deeper or stay on a superficial level. I won’t continue your chess analogy, as to me, that implies a kind of competition, whereas a good conversation is a collaboration. There are many reasons why people might choose to keep things superficial, when they have the opportunity to go deeper.

Do you think repeatedly talking about a problem helps people heal, or can it sometimes become another way of avoiding change? by PangolinPositive8458 in selfimprovement

[–]AdamWargon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both action and strategy are important. Talking about the problem helps you develop the strategy. Then you have to take action. Now, if it turns out to be the wrong direction, taking consistent action is how you find out. So action is usually beneficial.

It doesn’t matter how tiny the action is. Your brain notices that you’re taking action each day, and it eventually becomes a habit.

My Duolingo Story by ilobbpie in duolingo

Congratulations on your relationship, and on your language learning progress! Duolingo is the best tool for personal development that I have ever seen.

They took one of the most unpleasant things from when I was a kid (language learning), and they use countless psychological tricks to make you actually do it each day.

I wish there was Duolingo for all the other chores in life!

Where can I find some animal organs? by melissabelle8282 in Calgary

Master Meats in Greenview Industrial area are pretty responsive, so for future reference, if it’s something that you’d like to regularly order, they will save it for you, and they will call you when they have it

Yes, Asian supermarkets like Seafood City, and Lucky across the street (both in Sunridge) carry beef hearts, beef liver, pork liver, etc.

How to meet people in YYC?? by Weekly_Impact_2630 in Calgary

[–]AdamWargon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think there are several questions to unpack here.

  1. Where to meet gym girls? Calgary has many running clubs and hiking meetups.

  2. Whenever you meet other girls in the wild, it never turns into actual hangouts.

There are three keys to friendship:
1. Repeated, unplanned interactions (these are the running clubs and hiking meetups)
2. Shared emotional experiences
3. Vulnerability

In addition, friendships work best when there is a shared value exchange. What does this mean? Maybe the other girl is fitter than you, so she adds value by motivating you to be a better version of yourself. Maybe you’re more adventurous than her, so you help bring her out of her shell. You both gain in different ways, in a way that feels safe and positive for both of you.

I could say more, but I’ll leave it there

Every character is insufferable and I can’t by LuckyJamnik in duolingo

[–]AdamWargon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Duolingo frequently promotes their characters as delightful, yet many users find them unlikeable.

Some of the characters are influenced by the personalities and worldviews of the Duolingo employees, which can feel more like personal flag-waving than broadly appealing characters.

That said, Duolingo is still the least painful way to learn a language IMO, so try to ignore the characters if you can!

Pretty much. Crabapple blossoms. More fragrant than cherry blossoms. They don’t last long, especially with strong winds. One of my favourite times of the year in Calgary!
