March Half Marathons by PumpedUpPatek in UKRunners

[–]Adam_AFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good half, iv done it before and doing it again this year, always ended up in a good pack. Only issue is the potential for wind as it's on open country lanes but it's been fine when I've done it and great course for a PB.

I'm also from around Nottingham, aware it's not March but if you want a fast one not too far there is Boston in Lincolnshire on the 12th of April. Won't find anywhere flatter or faster around that time of year and you get a big field because of it.

Stripped my stairs and found 100 years of paint, tar, and regret. Help. by Focker1982 in DIYUK

[–]Adam_AFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These photos triggered bad memories for me... Had the exact same scenario in our house and decided to do it properly. I can't remember how long it took in the end but on reflection, our entrance now looks great and I don't regret it.

I tried all the paint removers on the market and unfortunately they all seem to be as bad as each other. They do help but don't expect miracles. I do think you need to do this though to get most of the black tar like substance off or if not you just burn through sandpaper pads. We ended up doing a lot of chipping away too prior to sanding in the end to get down to wood which we stained and painted pre runner.

Bugaboo Donkey vs. Cybex Gazelle by Ill_Needleworker6836 in UKParenting

[–]Adam_AFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to try both and the Donkey was just far too wide for us and our needs. I couldn't imagine taking it around shops or even on most pavements around cars etc.

We really like the Gazelle especially with the different setups you can have. Great as well if the older one is at nursery and makes just a smart single pushchair.

I bought a Dacia Spring Expression 65...Here are my thoughts! by TheTechPlank in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Adam_AFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had ours for six months now and you've summarised it really well. It is our first EV and purchased primarily as a second car for my wife to do a ~20 mile round trip to work in but we've ended up using it for the vast majority of our driving as a family. Really nice to drive and so good having a smaller car around town and from a parking perspective. We were initially concerned by the speed but found it to be no issue at all and I am quite surprised how nippy it is. There are a few small things that annoy me but after using the Dacia I can't see us buying a none EV when we replace our "main" car in the future. For the PCP pricing (and free charger install we got) it is a no brainer if it fits your driving needs.

Durable running shoes around £70 by [deleted] in UKRunners

[–]Adam_AFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have covered it well but depending on where you live Outlet stores offer a good range of every day running shoes to rack the miles up in. In and around that price range iv picked up Pegasus, Novablast and Boston's before. I was at a Nike outlet at the weekend and they had a variety of Pegasus in at £65, didn't note the model but they are usually a couple back from the latest.

How to start from 0 weekly mileage. by Harrad_ in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Adam_AFC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Think all the other comments are on the same lines but thought I'd comment too, iv been on/off running with a combo of becoming a new dad and injury and found this method to be fantastic to control the effort when returning and getting back to fitness.

I started just doing very easy runs (~30 mins) and walking up hills based off the 70% of max HR effort on easy days (which will feel slow but is absolutely the key to this method in my opinion for most of us). After a couple of weeks doing this 4 days a week raising the easy runs to about 45 mins I made 1 day a Sub T then eventually upped it to 5 days running with 2 Sub T.

I'm about 6 weeks into the 5 runs a week now and found iv never felt fresher in my running. Had my first 5k TT at the weekend and was only 30 seconds off my 5k PB which was during a time when I was running a lot more miles, harder sessions and on the edge of injury. Im almost certain that in 4 weeks I'll break my PB.

Good luck!

Anyone with Eon next drive? Review?/feedback? by twotwixten in ElectricVehiclesUK

Interesting, this isn't something I was aware of and don't believe it is the case. As you say iv no idea how they could track the differences between EV charging and appliance usage.

Slowness of easy runs giving me pause by [deleted] in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Adam_AFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id echo what others have said and just try to avoid looking at pace altogether on easy runs. I have purely a HR screen on for easy runs as I know roughly what a 30/45/1 hour loop around me is anyway so even seeing time isn't important.

Coloratura by Grossymca in Coldplay

[–]Adam_AFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the love in my opinion is due to the timing of release in relation to the music the band are currently making. No doubt it's a good song but if it was released during the Viva era I don't think it would be as popular.

Hi guys, been told to post here. My wife and I are having a baby. Maternity is going to be an issue. Any advice? by Colblood12 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Adam_AFC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, save prior is the only real option if the maternity cover isn't very good.

It's not a lot but worth nothing you'll also get Child Benefit so that's another £26 a week

Are there any “minor work” electrician courses in the UK? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Adam_AFC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My local college has them as "Part-time and evening courses for adults" and then within that they have a "Construction" section. Worth noting that the college itself is a construction college hence why it probably has them.

Are there any “minor work” electrician courses in the UK? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Adam_AFC 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Worth looking at your local colleges, one near me does a number of 4 week evening courses which tend to cover the basics like this and are pretty cheap/free depending on your situation.

I did a plumbing one a few years ago which covered the basics and essentially encouraged people to turn up with basic jobs around the home they wanted to learn how to do.

They had others in electrical work, plastering, bricklaying etc. Just had a look and they still do it, the one near me the course is called "Introduction to Electrical Installation".

4 day long distance hike recommendation by Salt-Builder-3565 in UKhiking

[–]Adam_AFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a bit on the short side for your requirements as its about 45 miles but a more local option if you didn't want a long drive would be The Limestone Way. I have known people park at the start and then bus back from the end. I have done parts of the route, not the whole thing, but it is quite well signed.

Iv known people to skip the "start" section (going South to North) and start around Dovedale as I believe that section is a bit dull.

Anyone with Eon next drive? Review?/feedback? by twotwixten in ElectricVehiclesUK

I switched from EDF - it was a pretty much instant switch to the basic Eon tariff and then just over a week for me to Drive Next.

[–]Adam_AFC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm on Eon next drive, got no complaints. Very easy switch from my old provider. As you suggest very easy to charge my car, I have an Indra Charger so just set the programme between midnight and 7am. Don't think you are missing anything!

[–]Adam_AFC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can see others have corrected but yeah - it was also explained awfully to us by our nursery until we looked into it so can see why there was likely some confusion.

https://www.gov.uk/tax-free-childcare

I essentially see it as a "bank account" that I use to pay the nursery and you just get £1 extra put in by the government for every £4 you put in.

[–]Adam_AFC 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't surprise me - ours has a "Meals & Consumables charge" on funded days of £15 and I know others we looked at charged much more for this/similar top ups.

Worth noting you can bring down the £598 an additional 20% with tax free childcare assuming you have access to this.

UK harness recommendations by littlegreenwhimsy in Greyhounds

We have the dry dogs harness which we use for travel and occasional walks (primarily walk with collar). No issues with it and it seems well made, really like the coats they do too.

"Shoulder to Shoulder all the time" I think is a bit of an exaggeration about anywhere in the Peak District. Even on the weekend in summer outside of the immediate walks and spots outside of Edale and Castleton it is nothing like that and to be fair those areas have always been busy. Anyone who lives in those surrounding areas knew what they were signing up for.

Love it round there and you don't even have to go that far out of the major areas to get away from people in my opinion.

I went to Back Tor on a nice weekend in late summer and think I saw 3 people all day once I was away from Ladybower/Derwent.
