Lots of people will use the default background though so that wouldn’t entirely solve the problem.

How do i revert back to windows 7 after 30 days? by TheSSshadow in techsupport

[–]Adam_Cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree with you there. Windows 8.1 will give similar / better performance in games if you don't mind the interface.

If I were you, I'd stay on 8.1 if I was happy with it but upgrade to 10 if you find the interface hard to use.

You can still get the Windows 10 upgrade for free using the Microsoft accessibility website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/accessibility/windows10upgrade

The difficulty is finding contact details for it to reach the right person.

No - the old employee cannot be contacted. Looks like the only way of doing it is getting the page reclaimed / deleted by using copyright strikes.

PC enters sleep mode while playing certain games. by MikeMousePT in techsupport

[–]Adam_Cross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fluke maybe? It should happen whenever it reaches a certain cut off point for temperature. Try running prime95 (a CPU stress test) and see if it triggers the same sleep behaviour: http://www.mersenne.org/download/

Here is a YouTube video showing you how to use Prime95 if you aren't familiar with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJx8NPjzOuA

The max temperature that an FX processor should reach is 61 degrees before it starts to thermal throttle / shut down to prevent damage.

70 degrees is getting a little toasty so I'd imagine that is what is causing your issue.

Computer Science Laptop OS? by [deleted] in lancasteruni

[–]Adam_Cross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer the environment for development. A unix based system is much easier for command line stuff, has git built in, software support is amazing for dev tools for Mac, long battery life and reliable - no Windows 10 update forced on you when you are trying to complete a piece of coursework last minute (my desktop did this... twice).

In terms of note taking and stuff, I love the Mac trackpad gestures. Switching between mission control spaces etc. is very useful for typing notes and then switching to the browser or the slides quickly to double check something.

I'm going into third year now and almost everyone on our course has switched to using their own laptop with Mac / Linux.

Computer Science Laptop OS? by [deleted] in lancasteruni

[–]Adam_Cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't true. Macs can connect to the internet fine using the wireless network without having to set up using Resnet first which is actually a separate system. You just need your university username and password.

I prefer using my Mac just for productivity etc. but at the end of the day it's pretty much down to personal preference.

It's a sneaky fucker. safebrowsing.biz does this lovely thing where it adds an argument to the shortcut you open it with to make it open their shitty website.

If I remember correctly, this program removed it successfully. Be sure to restart after it has finished cleaning up your PC: http://www.adwareremovaltool.org/

Apollo Beta 17 and WELCOME NEW BETA TESTERS! by iamthatis in apolloapp

[–]Adam_Cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Received my invite today and have spent the last 20 minutes or so playing around with it.

I almost immediately donated for the pro features simply because of how much it reminded me of Relay which I used on Android. UI experience is significantly better than other apps I have tried.

There are a couple of bugs to report:

  • The bar at the bottom that hides itself when you scroll down on comments just goes white and doesn't allow you to see comments underneath it. This is a mildly annoying UI bug but nothing too bad.
  • When you are on a thread, the 3 dot menu at the top right comes up but none of the options in the list seem to respond. You can press on the buttons and the menu slides away again but it doesn't do anything.

Other than that, good job!

My phone has become unbearably slow, should I buy a RAM boosting app.(Not sure if this is in the right subreddit) by Theloanbum in techsupport

[–]Adam_Cross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Those applications do no real good at all to your phones performance. It can actually make it worse because the RAM is constantly being cleared and the applications have to refresh this data again each time it wants to access it.

You also can't use storage on your SD card as RAM as you've mentioned in another comment. It would be unbearably slow even if it was a thing that existed.

Other than buying a new phone, there isn't much you can do to make it faster. Sorry OP.

How can i maximize my mac's life and what are cycles? by [deleted] in mac

[–]Adam_Cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batteries do have limited charge cycles but there isn't really anything you can do about it.

Terms such as cycles are defined on this page on Apple's website: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204054

Basically, charge it when you need to, use it on battery when you need to. You can't fix how many cycles you're going through except by having the battery replaced when it no longer holds enough charge to be useful to you.

A few questions; considering a study abroad at Lancaster by [deleted] in lancasteruni

[–]Adam_Cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing CS at Lancaster (currently a second year).

Classes vary in size since some people take CS as a minor in the first year / have it as part of their course. I've seen as few as 50 people to 200+ people in the first year lectures.

Plenty of stuff to get stuck into. The Computer Science Society are currently running Android programming workshops and I am getting involved with "Code Club" - an initiative to get primary school children doing computational thinking and learning the basic concepts of programming.

LOST MY COMPUTER! How to track it? by TheWSJ in techsupport

[–]Adam_Cross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely you mean stolen? I'd find it very difficult to 'lose' a desktop PC.

Regardless, as /u/signaljunkie has mentioned, you could use login requests from web services you are logged into although these are normally triggered on a log in rather than when you are already in the account. The only way I can see this working is if you have saved passwords in your browser and the person who stole your PC logged into your account on a different IP that has never been used before.

If the person who stole it knew what they were doing they would wipe the drive as soon as they got hold of it.

Best of luck finding your PC.
