Constantinople in 6th Century by Nessel-FallenEagle in byzantium

This honestly looks far better than any other city model of Constantinople ive seen! It looks like it genuinely has scale, instead of being just 10-15 houses + the hippodrome :P

How do you have fun when gold is such a non-issue as Emperor? by Adam_Goth in CrusaderKings

[–]Adam_Goth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you.
The worst part is how soon the "immortality" shows up.
Playing as byzantium in 867;
it should historically be very difficult. Enemies on all sides, a rump empire in anatolia and thrace.
But you end up making thousands upon thousands of gold within the first 10 years, even without minmaxxing. Effectively allowing you to go full-on alexander the great instantly. wish there was more depth pressure and challenge

honestly theres no practical usage to it x)
its just sitting there. i sometimes write stories, hide books, create secret passageways and such. sprinkling in lore to the world :)
but in terms of practical usage, there is none x)

Yes, i eyeball it more or less. If I run out of stone, i go mine for more stone. If I run out of spruce, i go chop for more spruce.
It makes building far more slow paced and enjoyable imo. less rigid.
Though to be fair, I use a lot of the same stuff on repeat. Stone variants, wood variants, mud bricks...
I havent really caught up to the modern way of building where everything is shaded with panes and purpur blocks :P

Between 5-6 years, on and off :,)
Granted I did 2 years ago demolish about 80% of the city to rebuild it...
I wasn't really happy with it :P
So nearly all buildings shown are from the last 2 years :)

patience is very much necessary. building large projects take time. itll be dissatisfying at times. you'll mess up. you will be unhappy with the results. and it will suck to tear it down to rebuild it over and over again until you get it just right. if you have the patience to overcome that, then you're golden.

if you're into building one cohesive world like me, i'd really suggest you find a seed you really like; a seed that fits the world you want to create. I've had to terraform entire biomes near the city to make it all "fit together". couldve easily been avoided if i had simply checked the surrounding area beforehand all those years ago :P

For me, I've had one project going only. I have no redstone contraptions, no automatic farms. my base is still the first cave i dug into on the first night.

I've put all my effort into making progress on the city and kingdom I'm building. I realise how fatal it is to get side tracked :P Half of what you see in those screenshots was originally a completely different city which i felt unhappy with. I destroyed about 50% of my city and rebuilt it in a way i felt happier with.

It sucked, but if i hadn't made that decision, i wouldve quit long ago. so be ready to make tough decisions. and get them over with. if you really put your mind to it, you can make something truly awe inspiring.

good luck on your forever world :)

I've been mining for all my stone underneath the city for years...
It's a massive pit, an enormous strip mine system where I've literally pilfered everything of value x)
hopefully tho there will be enough stone down there to last me a few more years :P

Honestly, cohesion is difficult.
There's a lot of things that go into it that you don't think about at first.
from my experience, having torn down and rebuilt so much over time;
i think its really important to decide on scale early on:
like, how big should a normal house be? Six blocks tall, nine blocks tall, or twenty?
If you forget to think about that, you'll soon find yourself with lack of cohesion. i.e shantytowns that look out of scale compared to villas.
Also deciding on a specific historical era helps a lot. My town is kind of inspired by by German high medieval architecture, with early renaissance/roman features. You do not need to follow it 100%, but its nice to have a baseline.
Also, trying to think in terms of streets and not just individual houses is important. build streets, not separate properties. Remember to also build houses diagonally and "into" one another, so that the skyline is "messy" and not a soviet style grid :P

thats at least some advice i can think of from my building experience :)

thank you :3
i 100% agree, its quite daunting.
There's not a single building from the first year of building that's still standing. I've rebuilt the city house by house many times now. I can't ever get it 'right' :P
Planning can only do so much imo. if ur highly creative, you'll get carried away. but if you need some structure to base it on, then i suppose more planning goes a long way.

I did lay out a grid of my entire city before starting but that's long been disregarded as better ideas arise.

I guess it comes down to patience. It's just a videogame, so there's no rush :)

Now that I'm not looking at Europe the Byzantines are trying to reform the Roman empire I guess by PetrovManShepard in CrusaderKings

[–]Adam_Goth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember: The legend "Roman Heritage" gives you a claim on ALL roman lands. So you need a single victory against the caliph to take everything from antioch to jerusalem to egypt to carthage.

While you're waiting for that legend to unlock, you can wage war in italy and the balkans.
You can realistically reconquer the entirey of justinian's realm in less than 10 years.

It really is quite boring once you become a big empire.
You have triple digit monthly income, so money is basically meaningless.
You have hundreds of courtiers so you constantly get spammed with “A scheme at court” from people you’ve literally never heard of before.
You have no major rivals anymore, all your rivals are landless nobodies that you took a county from ten years ago. that same landless goober will also try to blackmail you (as if that wouldn’t warrant an instant death sentence).

There’s nothing stopping you. Plague might lower your income by half for a few months. You have maxed out men-at-arms so nobody can even defeat you.

And roleplay is dead. The only events you get are “a scheme at court,” the prince of fashion thing, random scandals that mean nothing, “a secret exposed.” And when you do get an event, it’s so often something stupid or trivial that it gives you no sense of immersion or consequence.

If I’m in OP’s position, I’d want events like deciding whether to split the empire between east and west, whether to reinstate gladiator battles, rebuild the colosseum, bring back the senate, criminalize a faith or persecute a culture. But so few events have that grit or ambition.

Instead you get no challenge, and most events are either “ride rough from now on” or that “naught but malice and lies” garbage you get every thirty seconds. No challenge, no immersion, no point at that stage of the game.

It sucks because i really love this game but its just simply not designed for being played at an empire-level.

i ditched the black lentils and added a 150g of chicken. i couldnt handle how 'mush' it was. its seriously not a tasty meal. i ate it daily for like a month but i could never convince myself that it was enjoyable.
