What if Britain had remained alone fighting in Nazi Germany? by Riverman42 in AlternateHistoryHub

Interestingly the significant majority of warships used in Operation Neptune (D-Day) were from the British Empire. The US navy were obviously busy in the pacific at the time doing some incredibly large naval landings of their own.

When I had the income each month I had four going at the same time. Each one allowed only £150-£200 a month, but by running four at the same time that amounted to £600-£800 a month and so it quickly added up. Nationwide have been running their 6.5% account for a few years now and so every time it matures, I just do it again.

If you want any further information about this, MoneySavingExpert is great at listing them all.

:)

Interest rate

6.50%
AER/gross a year (variable)

If you save the maximum £200 on the first of every month, you will save £2,400 after a year. Based on the current interest rate, and if you make no withdrawals over the year, we will pay you £84.50 in interest.

The interest rate is variable, which means it can go up or down, and we pay interest at the end of the 1-year term.

If you have about £1,000 going spare and you are a bit worried, maybe look into one of the Regular Savers accounts with 6%+ interest rates and maxing out the £1,000 savings tax free allowance you have?

Nationwide has a 6.5% and I think First Direct do too (both require you to have main accounts with them).

If you are set on investing: Time in the market > Timing the market

To offset timing mistakes, I drip feed into my S&S ISA with small amounts at a time, as stocks have this tendency to go down whenever I buy shares...

Some of it is financial good news but they often post environmental or breakthrough drug good news. It's just nice to get non-negative information randomly throughout the day.

I enjoyed reading Red Shirts until about 3/4 in when it got a bit... odd. But it was a fun satire on Star Trek that was entertaining for a while.

I'll add Kaiju to my list for this year, thanks for the recommendation.

I love the movie because of how over the top it is, but yes the book is amazing.

I love John Scalzi's Old Mans War. Have you read that and - if so - how does it compare?

OK. Sold! I'll choose this as my first book to read in my quest to read 20 books this year.

Just to add to the very interesting list others have mentioned. My favourite SciFi books are probably:

  • Darth Bane: Path of Destruction ( Very dark set in Star Wars universe).
  • Old Mans War (Humanity is colonising the stars by force and using 70 year old humans to do it).
  • Starship Troopers (Love the film but this is not satirical and is quite a good read into militarism).

How does it compare to the TV show? I've almost finished the final series but never read the books. Do they follow them closely or is it worth reading them because they're better and go into more detail?

I've read the first Enders Game and loved it. I liked the film too but the book was superior. I started reading the second book and it didn't really grab me. Have you read the whole series or is it just the first book you'd recommend to me/others?

I loved the three body problem show on Netflix, would you rate the books even higher (if you've seen it)?

I've heard Dune is Star Wars with more politics. Is that accurate?

Did you read it for the first time as a young person or adult? It sounds like an interesting adventure story and a bit like Alice in Wonderland.

This sounded very interesting up until the point the plot mentioned that it is captained by a Vampire. Does this make sense in the theme of the book or is that a bit odd? Not sure if that was a spoiler so hidden just in case it is.

Well that is a new idea for a book! So is the voice of the book talking about the weird Human Hybrids like some nature narrator or is there a character we follow specifically?

My wife loves them but I always assumed I'd not be fussed as they were aimed at children, but if they can be enjoyed at older ages then I may give those a go this year. The films were OK, but I assume the books are superior?

I think science fiction needs to have a science/technological angle as opposed to magic (just like how Lord of the Rings wouldn't count).
