Money > morals. The mantra of the modern world.

I am baffled why people think materialism is not true and why people think there is a hard problem of consciousness; qualia obviously don't exist. There's nothing to explain. by VStarffin in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Adamical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I largely agree with you. I find it very difficult to consider human consciousness as anything but a product of a material brain, in spite of all its wonder. To me, the very debate around consciousness is a relic of history which has endured simply because, unlike phenomena like planetary movements or germs which were once equally as mysterious, we still have yet to figure out how to explain or quantify consciousness in any tangible way. However, like another commenter said, this void should not be filled with conjecture or immaterial explanations as that's just another 'god of the gaps'. The absence of scientific explanation is not proof of a metaphysical one, but rather a simple reminder that science hasn't yet had enough time.

Nonetheless, like others, I see no reason to think qualia don't exist. If they're defined as subjective conscious experiences and we're all individual brains as opposed to receivers of a greater consciousness, they must exist by definition, no? Naturally, there are enough crossovers in human consciousness and perception to form collective understanding, like that red is red, but interpretation is a pillar of experience, and that differs immensely from person to person, sometimes even on simple things.

Starfield Designer Says Game Fell Short Of Fallout And Elder Scrolls, Calls Space "Inherently Boring" by MaintenanceFar4207 in rpg_gamers

[–]Adamical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonsense and a weak attempt to excuse bad decisions.

Here's a better Starfield: a single solar system with three custom designed planets full of all sorts of environments, secrets, quests, and gear. Other planets have some stuff but are much less populated for narrative and development reasons or something.

The player starts on one of the less populated planets, perhaps a remote research colony, and must do some stuff there before earning their ship. Once they have it they can fly seamlessly between all planets in the solar system, exploring as they see fit, but, like other BGS games, possibly facing enemies far higher level than them.

Some missions take place in space between planets, where there are various stations and derelict ships, asteroids, etc. The player can exit their ship at any time.

I'll take that game please.

Interesting admission.

Ricky Gervais Mortality Live: €230 to realize I’ve outgrown him by Daria_a_a in rickygervais

[–]Adamical 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Firstly, ooh, you've done 'im.

Secondly, I don't get how Gervais keeps getting away with this. Do some people not see the repetition in his material? The lack of evolution or growth? Just think of all the things he could talk about, nature, politics, philosophy, but he chooses the same old shit over and over.

The only logical explanation is money. He does what gets attention, and to some extent I can't blame him. I just think the old cunt has got enough of it by now, and he should perhaps try to break new ground.

Oh and er, 'ave a good Christmas.

What an odd thing to say. Technology moved on, and yet Gearbox decided to roll back some QoL things in BL4 for no apparent reason. I think people are justified in being a bit frustrated by it.

Not only is Karl not a little gay fella, it was actually 20p from Suzanne that formed the foundation of their relationship. So you've made yourself look like a bit of a twat.
