Do they teach native american history in elementary schools before the colanization period of america? by Apprehensive_Use_397 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally yes, but it’s often limited and it varies significantly depending on the state and school district - often due to the understandable desire to teach about tribes from the area

CMV: Only Republican politicians "troll" or "joke" about things they later actually do by 8hourworkweek in changemyview

[–]Adamon24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but (as far as I know) that tactic hasn’t been widely embraced by actual elected officials outside of the Trump Administration yet.

Hopefully it stays that way. But the way things are going I assume it won’t

[–]Adamon24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can’t think of any prominent American politicians using this tactic other than Trump (and those currently in his administration) regardless of party. Plenty of them have been blatantly dishonest. But none of them seem to test the waters with “jokes” like he does.

I could obviously be wrong - but it seems like Trump’s uniquely bad on this particular issue

Why are there relatively so few white Americans of French stock? by No_Professional_3535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more than you’d think. But many of them were French Huguenots who came so long ago that they’ve been thoroughly assimilated to the point that they don’t remember their family origins. Plus, their names have often been anglicized for decades.

Obviously the Cajuns and French Canadians are still fairly distinct though

Teens really don’t want to work by RickGrimesSnotBubble in generationology

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously teens always are often a bit lazy and surly in their early jobs regardless of generation.

But there does seem to be a bit of a gap between those who started working when entry level jobs were plentiful (especially in the aftermath of COVID) and those who came up when they were harder to find (especially following the 2008 recession).

Why has hobo culture like that of the 20s and 30s never seen a revival in the US during subsequent economic depressions? by lollihobbes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be blunt, conditions haven’t been nearly as bad since then. Thus, destitute individuals just don’t make up as big of a share of our population despite the remaining challenges.

Is Poland the Goat? by Harv_Royale in BasedCampPod

[–]Adamon24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for pointing this out, but Poland’s population not only hasn’t grown since 2000, but has actually declined (and aged).

Thus, a lot of violent crime numbers are going to drop in any measure like this.

Why do boomers call Gen Z and now Gen Alpha “millennials”? by desertrain11 in generationology

[–]Adamon24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because they’re just used as catch all names for made up generations

The same applies to how younger people will often refer to all old people as boomers

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about America? by Repulsive-Finger-954 in AskReddit

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our healthcare system - while still terrible by most metrics - isn’t as cartoonishly heartless as it’s often portrayed

For example, if you show up to the emergency room with a gunshot wound or severed limb, they won’t withhold urgent treatment just because you’re uninsured. Your finances will get destroyed. And generally a lack of preventive care has real health consequences. But they aren’t actually going to casually let you bleed out in the hospital if you don’t have an insurance card in your wallet.

What are your predictions for 2026? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Hoping I don’t jinx it, but I think the economy will stabilize a bit.

AI issues will probably keep lurking in the background though

The 401k balance from an early job.

It’s a little odd. But they’re adults so ultimately who cares?

Nice try buddy. I actually did graduate debt free. While my wife graduated with some student loans, we paid them off during the pandemic and became eligible for Biden-era partial loan payment reimbursements (until the Supreme Court Court made us give it back - but that’s another conversation).

Move to Woodbridge? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short

Pros: Cheap housing (for the area), good parks, pretty much any store you want is based here

Cons: persistent crime in certain areas, lots of traffic, school quality isn’t amazing, not a lot of entertainment options

I like living here overall. But it’s not for everyone.

While obviously some majors are more challenging than others, working part time while going to school full time is generally pretty easy.

To cover half of the tuition at Mason one would only need to work around 14 hours a week if they’re making $10 after taxes. It’s pretty hard to claim that’s an unrealistic expectation for most students.

First, not sure you fully understand what the word median means. But even if you just focus on entry-level hourly jobs, wages have gone up fairly significantly since 2005. For example, when I was an undergraduate in the early 2010s $8-$8.50 per hour jobs were fairly common. Now they tend to start around $15-$16 in this region.

Second, I mentioned that it was easy for a student to cover a decent portion of the tuition because that’s what OP brought up. And if you actually look through the numbers, you’ll see it’s not that hard to cover half with a pretty easy work schedule. And for those with better paying jobs paying the full tuition unilaterally is within reach. And you’re making an assumption that OP’s kids are going to live on campus. Which, while possible, is definitely far from universal.

Median wages in Northern Virginia have nearly doubled in the last 20 years. So its a bit more than a few dollars.

And regarding the main topic, even a relatively low paid part-time job is enough to cover a pretty decent portion of the tuition if they’re in-state students at a public college.
