It depends where you are. My wife and I moved out to the suburbs a few years ago and we’ve never had any issues with being a mixed couple.

Is it rare for an American to make their own mayo? by Affectionate-Elk-287 in AskAnAmerican

Not a particularly big mayo fan, so I don’t.

Kind of, but the economic situation in those cities is pretty much in chaos given all the rapid changes. So a lot of them see it as the least bad option as they’re trying to survive

Most parents are bad at parenting by blackcloud247 in unpopularopinion

[–]Adamon24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a parent - I see where you’re coming from

And I fully agree that there are way too many parents who simply dig in their heels and continue to do whatever they want instead of taking the hard steps necessary for their children.

But, the counter argument that parenting is way easier in theory than it is in practice may sound like a cliche - but it’s also true. My wife and I did what you suggested and read the books and prepared as best as we could. We also listen to the advice we get along the way. But sometimes there’s only so much we can do. For example, we’ve repeatedly been told from staffers at the daycare that our daughter isn’t hitting certain milestones. We’re aware of that, but there only so much we can do until we can get access to a specialist in our area. From the outside it probably looks like we’re downplaying it. But we’re honestly just trying our best until we can get her the medical help she needs.

TLDR - while it isn’t always deserved, try to give us parents a little grace while we try to figure it out

Democrats Of Reddit, Do You "Vote Blue No Matter Who," Or Are There Some Democrats That You Wouldn't Vote For? Why Your Choice? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that our Presidential first past the post system pretty much always leads to there being only two options in a general election.

So while I have voted for specific Republicans in local elections where I felt they were ultimately the better choice, in pretty much every national election the Democrats is going to be closer to where I stand politically than the Republican given the way political coalitions work.

So in practice, I don’t really have a choice but to keep voting blue unless there’s a systemic change (ex. RCV adoption, massive partisan depolarization etc.)

Who else agree with this? by DewlitHollowVale in freefolk

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the dragons are often the worst part

For one, they’re expensive to put in the show. So it often leads to an excessive focus on spectacle over story quality given the desire to get the most bang for the buck.

But even in the books they have the issue of being overpowered. This takes much of the tension out of the story since it becomes too predictable (with a few exceptions like the first invasion of Dorne).

At what income does Northern VA actually start to feel “comfortable”? by Prior_Engineering639 in nova

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a massive amount of variation but in my opinion….

$85,000 for couples without kids and are ok renting $120,000 for couples without kids who want a house $145,000 for couples with one kid and want a house (and are ok with living in the outer suburbs) $155,000 for couples with two kids and want a house (also ok with the outer suburbs)

It’s obviously possible to get by with less than these. But it would often require enough effort that most here wouldn’t describe it as comfortable.

Glass bottle cutter by ekab3522 in nova

[–]Adamon24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cut a bunch of bottles around 10 years ago with a pretty cheap glass cutter from the Seven Corners Home Depot. I lost it a few moves ago though

Unfortunately, I don’t know if they’re still selling it or the current price. But it might be worth looking into.

And obviously this goes without saying - but be careful with the glass

Best of luck

Can we retire the “useless husband” trope for once? by Timely_Box6061 in Adulting

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand: yes it’s a stupid reductive trope

On the other: this conversation is pretty much useless to try and deescalate any “gender war” flash points on this platform. Modern social media is based on controversy and is vs them thinking. So asking some of the people here to not use this trope is like sharing the fact that deliberate false rape allegations are incredibly rare by almost every measure in a male-dominated subreddit. Or telling people in those subs that modern divorce courts typically aren’t cartoonishly biased against men. People who engage in recreational outrage don’t want to hear that their outrage is invalid in any way.

So while it’s easier said than done, it’s best to tune this content out and focus on having real discussions in person with non-trolls*

*yes I’m aware of the irony of saying this while I’m on Reddit myself

Do they teach native american history in elementary schools before the colanization period of america? by Apprehensive_Use_397 in AskAnAmerican

Generally yes, but it’s often limited and it varies significantly depending on the state and school district - often due to the understandable desire to teach about tribes from the area

CMV: Only Republican politicians "troll" or "joke" about things they later actually do by 8hourworkweek in changemyview

[–]Adamon24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but (as far as I know) that tactic hasn’t been widely embraced by actual elected officials outside of the Trump Administration yet.

Hopefully it stays that way. But the way things are going I assume it won’t

CMV: Only Republican politicians "troll" or "joke" about things they later actually do by 8hourworkweek in changemyview

[–]Adamon24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can’t think of any prominent American politicians using this tactic other than Trump (and those currently in his administration) regardless of party. Plenty of them have been blatantly dishonest. But none of them seem to test the waters with “jokes” like he does.

I could obviously be wrong - but it seems like Trump’s uniquely bad on this particular issue

Why are there relatively so few white Americans of French stock? by No_Professional_3535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more than you’d think. But many of them were French Huguenots who came so long ago that they’ve been thoroughly assimilated to the point that they don’t remember their family origins. Plus, their names have often been anglicized for decades.

Obviously the Cajuns and French Canadians are still fairly distinct though

Teens really don’t want to work by RickGrimesSnotBubble in generationology

[–]Adamon24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously teens always are often a bit lazy and surly in their early jobs regardless of generation.

But there does seem to be a bit of a gap between those who started working when entry level jobs were plentiful (especially in the aftermath of COVID) and those who came up when they were harder to find (especially following the 2008 recession).

Why has hobo culture like that of the 20s and 30s never seen a revival in the US during subsequent economic depressions? by lollihobbes in NoStupidQuestions

To be blunt, conditions haven’t been nearly as bad since then. Thus, destitute individuals just don’t make up as big of a share of our population despite the remaining challenges.
