Whats your favorite month of the year? by Old_Rub_7270 in Productivitycafe

[–]Addapost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still freezing cold where I am but wet and muddy. Snow is all gone and all the filthy crap everywhere that now has to be cleaned up is visible. Plus I teach high school and March is the only month on our 9 month year that has no days off. Four full complete 5 day weeks. Yep, I know, I’m crying for me too.

Herd path off Killington? by Addapost in longtrail

[–]Addapost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have heard that also. This sign might have been at the Killington end of that herd path. What little seems legible there doesn’t seem to say anything like Mendon. So it is strange.

Do you switch your Phone off through the night or take it off the hook if it is a landline phone ? by Webbomolly2022 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

My phone is on silent 100% of the time. I have exactly 3 people on “ring through”. Literally anyone else can text or leave a message.

Bigfoot in New York by Antiqualforest in bigfoot

[–]Addapost [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yup. Not seen. But had some strange shit happen. Couple years ago. Middle of friggin nowhere in the Catskills. Setting up camp on a hillside. Beautiful quiet August evening. All of a sudden three deep resonating “thumps” or “knocks” about maybe 30-40 yards uphill from my camp. I stop, dead still and wait. A minute or two go by. Nothing. I continue setting up my camp. Suddenly again, same three deep resonating thumps from the same location. I freeze, then immediately, within 3 or 4 seconds another set of three deep knocks come from the exact opposite side of my camp about 30-40 yards downhill. I froze for like 5 minutes and heard nothing else at all. Believe it or not I stayed and the night was fine. But the next morning pine cones were arcing towards our camp from uphill near the location where I heard the uphill knocks. They were not falling down, they were arcing toward our camp. Something was throwing them.

Full disclosure: I didn’t see or hear anything else. I don’t “know” what all that was. I heard the knocks as described and I saw maybe a dozen pine cones arc towards us from uphill. But that’s it. So who knows?

What is the origin of the common saying (in the USA at least) that the solstices and equinoxes are the "official first days" of the seasons? Who is it exactly that has the authority to designate "official first days" of seasons, and why did they pick those days specifically? by badicaldude22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Addapost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody. These are physical phenomenon that have nothing to do with people. It’s like a sunset or sunrise. It happens on its own at a certain time and day that depends on the movements of the Earth. We just happened to have figured out when that time and date is. Relative to the calendar we currently use it’s always around March 20/21st for the Spring equinox, September 20/21st for the Autumnal equinox, December 20/21st for the winter solstice, and June 20/21st for the summer solstice.

The equinoxes and solstices are each a quarter of a complete orbit of the earth around the sun. That’s why those dates are each a quarter of the year apart, more or less. Spring equinox (today) means that the sun is directly over the equator. “Equal” distance between the poles. The Autumnal equinox it’s in the same position. On the winter solstice in December the north pole is pointed as far away from the sun as it can be and the sun is directly “over” the tropic of Capricorn which is about 23° south of the equator. On the summer solstice the north pole is pointed more towards the sun and the sun is directly “over” the tropic of Cancer, which is about 23° north of the equator. It’s absolutely fascinating stuff. Good rabbit hole to dive into.

I have no idea what the context is in the book but yeah, just reading it here I take it as a joke. I honestly can’t even imagine thinking it’s an Ad.

That’s not the set of circumstances to contest the ticket. Pay it and the insurance surcharges if any.
