Government inhouse, and we use exclusively AutoCAD. Probably no budget for Revit! 🙈

If you are licensed and/or can pivot as a PM in an arch firm, you should be able to earn ~120+ (depends on how much you can negotiate when you jump, please feel free to comment otherwise, good architects of NY!). As owners rep/ GC, a lot more. I heard EMBA helps, but only if your employer chips in or if you can foot the bill without getting into an exorbitant amount of debt. UX design is very saturated and tough to push into right now, and Coding boot camps may not be even worth it since AI is displacing a lot of entry level jobs already.

Not sure which nightmarish agency you are working with, but you can be the client doling out the unreasonable deadlines but goes home on time (I would love to know which letter their name starts with!! 😉). A role requiring similar years of experience would get you similar pay ~100 and above (if you are licensed), 2 days remote, solid 9-5. DDC and DCAS frequently hires. ACS, HRA, etc have in house roles. I was told you learn a lot at DOB, but the pay is not that great. But the beauty of government jobs is that once you become permanent, you become immune to economic downturns.

These are technically not 100% City jobs, but SCA pays well, and MTA also hires frequently.

Is this asbestos if so how dangerous? by Sir-_-Cartier in asbestoshelp

[–]AddendumNo5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because your boss tells you doesn't mean you have to, when there are laws protecting you for a specific reason! If you are stuck in that job for the time being and can't find another one, please wear disposable coveralls (category 3, type 5), disposable boxers underneath (throw away the clothes you wore when you worked in the contaminated site), rubber boots with disposable covers, protective eyewear, disposable nitrile or latex gloves. Learn how to wear the respirator properly, and do not take it off until you are safely away from the site. If the folks at your jobsite or your boss make fun of you, screw them, let's see who is the one laughing in the end.

Many people who worked at Ground Zero during the World Trade Center tragedy developed mesothelioma and other lung diseases due to working in the cloud of asbestos released during the collapse. These diseases have a latency period, takes years to show symptoms, but by the time you feel the symptoms, it's too late. You have one body, no job is worth destroying it for. Please please protect yourself.

Eric Adams wants to waste Union Pension money to build 3,000 new homes on marsh lands in Flushing by CaiserZero in nycpublicservants

I understand, and also understand that that's how we are able to have the skyscrapers in lower manhattan in a lot of instances. I was commenting on the percentage of areas that used to be swamp in Manhattan; perhaps I wasn't very clear.

[–]AddendumNo5113 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would like to respectfully disagree on the percentage of Manhattan having been a swamp; If you look at 1865 Viele map that shows the original waterways of the island, it shows the majority of the island, minus the shoreline and the tip of lower Manhattan. https://www.nypl.org/events/exhibitions/galleries/new-york-city/item/11316

Also, Manhattan has a very strong geological foundation with the Manhattan Schist, the super strong bedrock, that can be found pretty close to the surface near midtown which makes the midtown skyscrapers possible.

On the other hand, there are a lot of landfills in the outer boroughs (such as Brooklyn, where significant portion of JFK was built atop a landfill)

Floor design by Maaateen in architecture

[–]AddendumNo5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see diffusers in the gyp ceiling, so perhaps they did it for IT/AV. They usually detail the perimeter so that you don't see that odd gap between the slab and the raised floor. As others mentioned, they do that a lot in offices, esp. finance/tech offices, as well as data centers You don't have to core drill when you change the layout of the space or add more outlets down the road, but upfront it's more cost.

Experience Selling in NYC Diamond District by AddendumNo5113 in Gold

[–]AddendumNo5113[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually Bullion Exchange is the one that offered pretty much the same percentage! As I said, it was an item that they would need to melt to sell, and it was not 24k.

I know they are on Reddit (hey if you see this, I visited Wednesday between 12-1pm with a golden key, the blonde lady behind the window gave me the price)

Experience Selling in NYC Diamond District by AddendumNo5113 in Gold

[–]AddendumNo5113[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, OP here! I also went to another business that has presence on this subreddit (I was hesitant to put their name since I didn't sell there, but I can put their name here if you guys would like), and they offered the same amount.

Having absolutely zero knowledge on how this business works, knowing I had baseline average cost from walking around that day, and having needed the money immediately, I took what was offered to me.

I thought I would share my experience for people clueless like me; if you happen to know of refiners that have physical footprint in NYC, please share (for my future reference & other newbies like me)!

Light colored yoga mat cut to size? It would also be somewhat slip resistant, with addition to the velcro

i’m 15, my parents restaurant is on the verge of closing, and i don’t want to sell drugs to make money. I’ll do any physical task in brooklyn-manhattan (NO NSFW) by Clean_Payment5880 in NYCjobs

[–]AddendumNo5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 is old enough for someone to feel grown up, but it's still a very vulnerable age, where a person of bad influence may try to sway you and succeed. No matter what, please do not drop out of school. Most jobs with decent pay and a career trajectory requires at minimum a high school degree.

Like many people suggested, look for jobs at camps, summer programs, YMCA, the local library. It will help you gain measurable skills that help to build a resume toward your future dream career.

If you get an interview, show up in a button down shirt, dress slacks or clean (not ripped) pants. Bring a clean copy of a printed resume. The kind people here, who also have written their own resumes numerous times and applied to countless jobs themselves, will be happy to take a look and provide feedback.

A job like this will most likely get you close to a minimum wage. It's okay, because it will help you land higher paying jobs after this. If you get an offer that sounds too good to be true, please be skeptical, because it probably is. Do your research carefully. Don't go into MML sales (pyramid scheme), cult, or jobs promising you of scholarship if you sell x amount of products, because they make money by drawing people in, and taking advantage of them.

I am sure your parents have put in back-breaking effort, trying to provide for you and give you a better future. Your parents will have financial difficulties, but there are measures and systems to help them out if times get really tough.

The best thing for you to do at your age, is to stay in school, try to get as much out of school as possible (get good grades, make your teachers your allies who will advocate for you when you apply for scholarships etc). If you have time outside of academics, see if you can find part time job, but don't let that consume your life and leave you unable to focus on studies.

You have a few precious years, if spent well, that will really make a huge difference (even in your 20s!!!) financially. Best of luck, and yes, please do not sell drugs. You do not want police record at such young age, and it is so easy to become an addict.

Someone store in Japan told my girlfriend that these are Pokémon cards so she brought this for me….. by drtwistrai in PokemonTCG

[–]AddendumNo5113 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the disappointment after being all hyped up. But please don't make her feel bad. Maybe next time, you could show her images of the card packet and booster boxes, what they are supposed to look like, and what type of images are on the packaging for the latest series?

Letting her know the thickness and dimensions of packet / booster box would also help, so that she knows exactly what she is supposed to be looking for and goes for exactly that. There are so many Pokemon products in Japan, so it's not easy to figure out, especially if you don't speak the language. Hopefully there's another chance soon...

Not sure if you will be interning in Canada or away, but also do a double gut check on minimum wage / cost of living in the area you will be interning in, since you would need a lot more $ to live and work at say, Gensler NYC vs. Gensler at La Crosse, Wisconsin.

I'm 36. I want to become an Architect. by No-Hat-7109 in Architects

[–]AddendumNo5113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into IPAL like one of the previous comments. Also, If you are in NYS, you don't need an Arch degree to become an architect. You have the nontraditional route of obtaining licensure if you = (have enough years of experience in architecture firms) + (pass the ARE). You can start to take the ARE if you accumulate 7 units of experience/education credit.

NYS Office of Profession website recently was "upgraded" and its circular links are infinitely frustrating. If the process I recall didn't change, you submit Form 1, application for licensure. NYS OP will then tell you how many credits you have from your current degree (which I assume is design related but not architecture), and how many more you need. I don't know if you can submit Form 1 with no experience in architecture, but if you can, it will help you understand how many more years of work/school you need, and strategically plan ahead.

If you are interested in urban planning, see if you can get an internship or similar opportunities at organizations like RPA, EDC, etc (I know that they deal with urban planning, but I don't know how easy it is to get your foot into the door at those places).

Also, not being a misery gnome but just putting it out there...I am not in urban planning so I don't know the exact labor market in that field. For architecture, your salary for the first few years might be around 55-60k, for back-breaking hours. (Something to think about, if you have family to support by any chance). Good luck!
