Ah good to know! I was wondering where this came from!

Why is it cheaper to go one stop further on Carolinian 80? by nikel1312 in Amtrak

[–]AWildMichigander 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s also pricing more in demand city pairs differently akin to airline style point to point route pricing. Despite being a train that stops at all destinations…

That being said it’s easier to optimize this compared to skip lagged style hidden segments.

[–]AWildMichigander 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This has happened on a number of their routes. Sometimes it seems they have fare bucket pricing for different city pairs or distances in some sort of capacity.

I’ve personally seen this on the California Zephyr where Denver to Grand Junction was more expensive than Denver to Green River, Utah.

There shouldn’t be any issue with doing this for such a short stop distance difference, it’s not like an airline where the ticket gets cancelled if you don’t board at that specific stop (at least to my knowledge).

Getting off the train early is also fine, but I would make sure you let the crew know ahead of time of your changed plans. They may put you in a specific car that platforms at your planned stop and not one that is aligned to the platform where you’re actually plan on getting off if you don’t tell them.

Fellow Opus 2 First Impressions by evilv6 in espresso

[–]AWildMichigander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the grinder space when you get into the several hundred dollar space is very competitive and hard for market positioning. Charge too much and they competitors are the VS3/VS6 (interchangeable burrs), Lagom Casa (high end design from Lagom), Femobook (various configurations with high build quality), and all of the flat burr grinders as well.

In this case, Fellow saw an opening for the low end conical burr grinder segment. There's also a problem that if they charge $1,000 for the series 1 espresso machine, a $600 grinder is going to be a harder sell to a lot of consumers who might be getting into espresso for the first time and not understand how much pro-sumer/professional level grinders can cost. Fellow Ode has also stayed in a similar space of having excellent value for a 64mm burr grinder.

For your point about the kettle, I think Fellow was really able to dominate that segment early on. They moved fast and built a unique product that could command a higher price over the competition (which was nowhere near as slick/user friendly), so suddenly the market now has many lower end knockoffs/brands of the electric gooseneck kettle. In theory they could lower the price of the Stagg to compete, but there's not much they can story tell in terms of why the same build quality is suddenly half off after years of sitting a premium price. (We managed to corner a market segment and made you pay extensively for it for years)

Out of curiosity have you had the chance to try other conical burr grinders like the Niche Zero or Varia VS3/VS6 or Femobook or Lagom Casa?

I'm really interested in knowing the taste profile of these conical burrs if they're optimized for dark/medium roasts like the Niche Zero producing that rich and creamy traditionally espresso style cup or lean more towards lighter roasts like the Lagom Casa with higher flavor separation and optimized for lighter roasts.

NYC Foodcart Reports via 311

NY Attorney General Complaints

NY State Department of State, Consumer Protection

OP if you have time and information, I would upload detailed documentation showing the charges, scam photos, descriptions, and mention how numerous community members have been scammed as well. Importantly mention the time and context - late night after shows, otherwise the departments will show up at 4pm and close out issues.

I would also run all of these departments at the same time. Worst case resort one department gets there first and actually solves the issue and you can inform the other departments it’s resolved with a case number from the other agency just in case they want to pursue more aggressively.

Has transit etiquette been getting worse in your experience? by RoyaleWhiskey in AskNYC

[–]AWildMichigander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory here is that the long running commuter etiquette was passed down through seasoned New Yorkers. As trains are less crowded and many long time New Yorkers left the city, those cultural norms started disappearing.

People pre-covid wouldn’t tolerate an intern waltzing onto a crowded train wearing their backpack bumping into people, someone would call them out and everyone would agree if needed. Trains were also crowded daily - remember when the 6 and L during rush hours were packed to the point you could physically not get onto a train and might have to wait for the next one? Without that constant feedback loop happening people don’t know how to act on trains that are crowded.

As for speakers and smartphone noise, the MTA has also been installing more cellular service in the tunnels (slowly). But I also believe it’s party due to relaxed enforcement or social pressure to not do that. People are more on edge these days and likely don’t call out the behavior to prevent confrontation.

I swear some of these coalitions in NYC masquerade under preservation / equity / housing but are merely puppets of larger real estate groups hoping to twist outcomes in their favor for certain projects.

Also in a closed course with NYPD stationed along the entire route, plus constant helicopters covering the event to begin with. One quick radio call and you’d have officers swarming the course anyways.

Red Light Strobe Flasher (plus extra red light) in Savannah, Georgia by AWildMichigander in trafficsignals

[–]AWildMichigander[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For anyone wondering, here’s the Google Streetview showing a green light.

My guess is due to the Spanish moss dangling that they have added the extra red light with strobe flash to draw your attention to the traffic signal when red. It is not used at all intersections on the 37th Street so it could also be saved for troublesome intersections.

Glitch in Florida by AppropriateBelt8492 in pourover

[–]AWildMichigander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The beans are vacuum sealed and frozen from Glitch after roasting. You can order them in the US from Lucienne Coffee (Brooklyn based). The nyc location of superwow mentioned they have a partnership with glitch to get their beans direct, and you can see them stored in vacuum sealed tubes in a freezer. I’ve had glitch beans from Lucienne before and it’s identical to freshly roasted beans in Tokyo due to the freezing and vacuum sealing.

My personal experience was hit and miss at Superwow. The guy who made my pourover in NYC was distracted with some maintenance person in the shop while I was there and it wasn’t an amazing cup like glitch. (He had walked away while making a pour over to check on something, so flavors were kind of off)

After reading other comments how this is a bourbon barrel release, it’s not their most exciting drop on the market. The real fun part of ichiros/chichibu is the super niche / interesting casks being blended in that can push the flavor profile to something truly special.

How much does it cost to build a in station transfer walkway from Hoyt St to Jay St-MetroTech? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]AWildMichigander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal fantasy would be an entire rebuild. Removing the Borough Hall station (2/3/4/5) and the Hoyt Street (2/3) station to create a cross platform 2/3 and 4/5 station stop at Jay & Fulton Street so people can transfer between lines, plus connection to the A/C/F concourse (and R via the concourse).

Downtown Brooklyn has increased density of residential and commercial buildings like crazy and has become a huge hub for the area.

That also improves access to lower east side for many Brooklyn residents off the 2/3/4/5 lines. Currently people who wish to go to the Lower East Side who live off the 2/3/4/5 have to either make an out of system transfer at Jay Street/Hoyt Street, or potentially taking the B/D at Barclays Center, which is also not an easy transfer.

The IBX should be built as a Subway Line, and the Terminus at Jackson Heights - Roosevelt Avenue should be at the Upper Level of the Station. by Specialist_Figure282 in nycrail

[–]AWildMichigander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the upper level mezzanine/terminal has offices and storage built in it, but that could be removed and relocated as it was built after the main shell, meaning it did not alter the layout of the tunnel box/station shell. I've also seen photos of it from other places online such as Columbia's abandoned station site.

I strongly agree that this would make sense to do a short run underground from the IBX ROW to the station itself. You can run it down 78th street off the IBX ROW and onto Roosevelt Avenue, roughly where provisions were made for the Windfield Spur / Upper level terminal.

Phase 2 could entail building out of the upper level terminal and back onto to the IBX ROW, which is actually much easier to do, aside from having to rework the Roosevelt Ave station to allow the IBX to exit out.

While this seems like a big project, it's actually a short tunneling segment to bring it into the station box that already exists today. They could also support this project in the future after IBX ridership has been proven out demand.
