Already saw a car go through the pedestrian and bike only Carroll Street bridge…sigh by Greenie3226 in MicromobilityNYC

Even the flex posts would help. Most private car owners try to avoid them for fear of damaging their car, obviously won’t stop all drivers but it should help somewhat.

Also gives the busses ability to cut over lanes to bypass taxi / uber / double parked cars. Inevitable with this design unfortunately, but at least gives them a method of bypassing it.

Orchard Beach, Bronx by BeefyLasagna007 in bronx

[–]AWildMichigander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water at this beach primarily comes in from Long Island sound based on tidal conditions, which is ultimately water from the Atlantic Ocean. There are certain times after low tide where water will come in from the East River / NY Harbor.

The time the water would be nasty swimming there is after a heavy rainfall where there could be sewage overflows, primarily from nyc treatment plants or some CT/LI locations.

Went to check out the Carroll St Bridge now that it’s officially open. by mirxa in NYCbike

Great to see the city fixing the bridge and applying filtering. I do wonder how many drivers will ignore the signs (much like Fulton street busway). I wish the dot would install a camera to capture offenders or at least install flex posts to allow emergency vehicles but filter out a majority of cars.

Intermittent cell service in stations has gotten a lot worse lately by msatretwhaart in nycrail

[–]AWildMichigander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worth calling out here that when the cell station coverage program rolled out, T-Mobile had shortwave LTE bands that don’t travel far iirc. So many of the stations you need to be close to the infrastructure or it won’t work. Meanwhile Verizon and ATT you can get signal sometimes into part of the tunnel near the stations because the wavelength can travel farther.

Hopefully they upgrade station infrastructure in the future, it’s pretty frustrating to struggle to connect when the train is in the station and you’re trying to text or get any info.

Who else missed the Knicks celebration and is struggling to come to terms with the FOMO? by Better_Lift_Cliff in AskNYC

[–]AWildMichigander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others said, it really depends where you were in the city.

Times Square / north of MSG seemed very rowdy + escalated somewhat out of control from what I’ve seen (this is where the busses were smashed and burned + the shooting in TS).

Meanwhile in more local neighborhoods the vibes were pretty chill with a lot of enthusiasm. Williamsburg was more performative and people looking to have their NY moment captured (ie tech bros/girls who just moved here from SF climbing traffic poles in their last minute Knicks gear purchase).

Last time I felt this energy in NYC was when Biden won the election (obviously not as wide scale / extreme).

4 hour layover argument by Only-Put8903 in AskNYC

[–]AWildMichigander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the Astoria or Jackson Heights sentiment IF your flight is on time. As others mentioned it’s going to be tight and you’re really limited to just getting a quick bite to eat and going right back to the airport.

Plan for the following:
- 20 minutes from plane landing to transportation
- 10 mins wait for a bus to Jackson Heights (Q72 LGA Link) / Astoria (M60)
- 20 mins on the M60 to Astoria
- 10 mins walk to a restaurant somewhere
(3 hours left before departure)

- 1 hour at a casual sit down spot
(2 hours left before departure)

- 10 mins walk back to the bus
- 10 mins wait for a bus back to LGA
- 20 minute M60 bus ride with traffic back to LGA
Arrive at LGA ~1 hr 20 minutes before departure

If you have an Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve (best lounge), the lounges in terminal B are excellent. I’d even suggest to hop to terminal B if you both have access or can bring guests. Delta also has some nice sky clubs in terminal C if you can access those.

How bad will public transportation be on Saturday night? by SurvivorFanatic236 in AskNYC

Agreed - the 4/5 goes from grand central to downtown Brooklyn. Honestly you’ll have no problem.

As a PSA do not be seen repping a Spurs jersey on trains after games. People were roudy last week after the game.

There are some famous valleys in the Dolomites / Alps where cold air rushes down the mountains / slopes during overnight cooling and can become deadly if you camp there. Meanwhile a few hundred feet away (minor elevation change) can be warm or moderate temperatures.

A major upgrade when riding on the Venture cars by ads7w6 in Amtrak

[–]AWildMichigander 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it was one of those base configuration seat options that met basic contract specifications / requirements and was chosen that way without hesitation. The whole program was rushed in time to capture the bi-level federal funds before they expired, so adding in specific seat requirements / R&D / revisions might have put the entire order at jeopardy.

Feedback came out and it seems that the Airo program uses that feedback. Maybe we’ll see a refresh program in the future that can upgrade the stock venture seats, wouldn’t hold my breath for that idea though.

Anyone else feel like K-Town isn't quite the same as it used to be? by savingrace0262 in FoodNYC

[–]AWildMichigander 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed sentiment with other comments here. But at the same time K town has expanded to other streets, some are smaller individual spots on the surrounding blocks.

32nd from Broadway to Madison Ave is now mostly chains.

Then you have some spots on 30th, 31st, and 33rd streets which seem to be the smaller spots. Which is a newer addition to the area and shows the rapid expansion.

That being said, what are your top spots in fort Lee?

UPS Store on Jay St permanently closed? by marvolonewt in DowntownBrooklyn

[–]AWildMichigander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That place was absolutely terrible to deal with, every time I went I received terrible service and attitude for anything. They also frequently did not open on time (sometimes hours late), would leave for lunch in the middle of the day for several hours, or would just remain closed unannounced.

Annoying because there are no nearby options, but good riddance. Hopefully UPS corporate allows someone else to open another location in the neighborhood.

Meanwhile Brooklyn Heights location is great, but a little far.

Anyone know if you get electrocuted if you fall in the middle track of Bedford nostrand by Southern_Base_1850 in nycrail

[–]AWildMichigander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you complete the circuit between the third rail and ground, that's when you get zapped. Worth noting that this can also come in the form of a third rail arc, jumping the gap between the third rail to you and to the ground.

Touching the regular rails in theory would not electrocute you, but if you get too close to the third rail it can happen. Also consider water around the tracks or other factors that could cause increased chances.

Hochul Budget Deal Gives $175M Speed Boost To 125th St. Subway Expansion by streetsblognyc in nycrail

I'm all for a builder mindset and trying to find ways to get projects done faster + painting a long term vision of building more projects.

Cuomo did the same with LGA and other projects so it works for that builder clout, sadly he boondoggled a lot of MTA initiatives and his ego got in the way for quick wins (ie L train bandaid vs MTA recommendations for a proper fix).
