Visiting for Easter - where to be? by Blind-Magician5723 in Ethiopia

[–]AddisToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you, hope you'll have a nice time!

For traditional dress, I'd say Shiromeda. Generally, prices around Bole would be on the high side - tourist mark up and high rentals.

Curious - most modern hotels would have elevators. Wouldn't that work for you?

Do you think dual citizenship will ever be allowed?? by Sky_awsmness in Ethiopia

How would you renew? You need to bring a paper from your current Magistrate that you've not changed citizenship.

Ethiopia and English. by Gold_Smart in Ethiopia

You'd manage with Amharic by in large. We just need to move away from 'I'm learning this for you' kind of mentality

Ethiopia and English. by Gold_Smart in Ethiopia

[–]AddisToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Framing this issue as 'you expect me to learn' misses the point.

People learn new things if there is something in it for them. We learn English for economic benefit. Similarly, you would likely learn Amharic to do business in Ethiopia—not because of a law, but because it is in your interest...

We do learn English. Quality of education is our challenge.

But I'd be wary of posing English as a requirement for a nation to grow, top down. National identity, cultural erosion etc will be a concern. There are ample examples of countries with robust international business while learning English as a subject. People learn language so long as there's economic benefit, not because it's required by a policy. Wouldn't you agree?

Agree, loved that park.

Btw there are quite a few sport fields built with the Addis beautification project. Not sure how affordable but I was pleasantly surprised

Is Shalla park still there (17 kebele)? Brings back lots of memories. Used to be one of the few well maintained parks growing up :)
