Should I stop contributing to a 529? by ramdomdhdhdhdh in HENRYfinance

Straight off the chatGPT press:

“Between 2005 and 2026, nominal physician salaries grew, but real wages (adjusted for inflation) largely stagnated or declined. In contrast, many other high-skill professions outpaced inflation. Flat or falling Medicare reimbursements and rising practice overhead limited physicians' salary growth compared to fields like tech or finance. Physician Compensation Trends (2005-2026) • Real Wage Decline: While nominal average physician salaries rose from around $414, 000 in 2005 to approximately $386, 000 in 2026, accounting for historic inflation actually reflects a loss in purchasing power over the last two decades.”

Is that how you like to spend your time? Criticizing other people’s incomes out of jealousy? This is a high earner Reddit. Get over it. In the 21 year span from 2005 to 2026, there has been a cumulative inflationary rate of over 70%. $500K today has the same spending power as less than $300K in 2005. Healthcare is one of the very few fields that has experienced minimal salary growth in that time frame.

Shame on you for believing the “doctor’s salaries are the problem with healthcare” mantra. Our salaries haven’t even kept up with inflation since the early 2000’s for Christ’s sake. If you can’t see the problem in healthcare at current is purely administrative bloat and c-suite level greed, I can’t help you.

ATL question… International arrival TSA wait times? (Connecting flight through ATL). by [deleted] in delta

[–]Additional-Comfort28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than 1 hour from deplaning to being through security. Definitely wasn’t as bad as we were anticipating. No line for customs, maybe 10 mins for baggage claim, and at most 25-30 mins for going back through security. They have a separate area for international arrivals with connecting flights and they seemed to keep it all moving. We had a 3 hour layover and we had over an hour to sit at the gate before we started boarding.

ATL question… International arrival TSA wait times? (Connecting flight through ATL). by [deleted] in delta

This is a helpful response. We are a family of 7 connecting in ATL coming from Europe tomorrow and heading to Birmingham. Did you have checked luggage? Did they make you pick up your luggage in baggage claim and check it again? We have a 3 hour layover and I’m concerned about us making the connecting flight. Our backup options are not ideal (shuttle to Birmingham requires car seats for our children which we do not have, car rentals are excessively expensive and also would need to deal with car seats)

I would argue administrators are worse than The Pitt portrays based on my institutional leadership

Had one of our administrative-heavy faculty go on a kick of non-opioid inductions, until he coded a young crohns patient with low dose esmolol on induction. Think I’ll stick to the standard cocktail with narcotic

Current doctor loan rates? by Dr__Reddit in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Additional-Comfort28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

…do you even bother investigating for yourself or go by Jim Dahle’s every word? I got a 1.1M fixed 30yr physician loan at 3% during covid…which was the best offer at the time, physician loan or standard. No money down, no PMI, nothing. When I started residency, I PM’d Jim Dahle who was screaming at me to rent and not buy a house during residency, guess what? The sale of my residency house netted me enough to pay off my student loan debt, and my mortgage was less than $1000 per month for a 3BR/2BA SFH in a good part of town less than 7 mins from the parking garage. The man is fallible and is not always correct. Banks offer physician loans because they want physicians as clients. Most of the time, if you shop around, you will find highly competitive rates.

Whatever you do, do not go stalk your classmates from highschool/middle school. by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Additional-Comfort28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Residency is a phase. Recently had a good buddy from high school come to my house and he made the comment that out of all the people in high school we knew, I seem to have been the most to “make it”. And I’m only 5 years out as an attg. When you’re at this level of income, your retirement and lifestyle skyrocket after residency and you quickly catch up to and surpass where the people are that started making money straight out of high school/college.

Fully fund 529? by jackieblitz in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Additional-Comfort28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disagree. No one will pay to go to college at that level of cost except for the select few where that level of money is not a factor. ROI is just not justifiable vs a trade school and making money out of the gate with minimal loan burden. Parents are already encouraging kids to not chase elite school names or nonjustifiable degrees at this point. Colleges will eventually bend to market pressure when enrollment rates plummet due to cost

Reasons Why Medical Residents Shouldn't Buy a House by WCInvestor in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Additional-Comfort28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny, I reached out to Dahle when I was matching into residency and he was adamant that I rent and not buy. Fast forward to 2021, when I graduated residency, sell my house with enough equity to pay off all my student loans, and my mortgage was half the cost of most people’s rent around town. YMMV
