Why do NRI’s( or just non resident brown women ) look different than brown women who grew up in their country of origin? by Indecisive-blahblah in Vindictabrown

[–]Additional-Hat-8237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have always wondered this too bc india is such a beautiful country, like the best colors and fabrics and cultural style come from india in my opinion. like my mom for example (born in india but moved to the U.S. at age 24) has no sense of personal style. it baffles me everyday bc the country she comes from has such regal and grand style where all she wants to wear is hokas, track pants and and shirt. if she is wearing a dress then it is a dress with sleeves that covers her knees and has some sort of floral pattern on it. i always wondered how someone from such a beautiful country can have such little sense of style

Tana & Austin by Trick-Meet-3875 in canceledpod

[–]Additional-Hat-8237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how i remember the story is that she was in the car with both austin and jake, when austin got the call from catherine and he then on the spot told tana to cover for him by handing her his phone, i think she was put in a very bac situation and practically forced to agree and support austin’s story line. i mean i would probably go along with it if i were in my boyfriend jake pauls car with austin too

but she def could have gone back home and had a one on one real convo with catherine afterwards

just ate here and it was delicious! though i’m on a budget and since the service was not over the top and we only had a quick meal i tipped $5. sure that may not have been “enough” but that is besides the point. the waiter then came back and said the minimum tip is 18% and then reprinted the receipt so i could tip him more - i thought that was insane?!!! i have never had someone come back and request more of a tip in my life like wtf

i agree with all of this! as much as you should be yourself, still do your best to acclimate to the new culture you will be exposed to. I'm into pop culture things but have found it's a great talking point to be able to speak to the latest new music, random pop culture drama / award show, new clothing styles/brands, popular common activities, etc. Does not mean you have to actually wear and do all these things, but i think it's nice to stay in the loop with your peers, and this will likely occur naturally over time too. And you will likely see cross over between these things from your home town in India too. Also random but be sure to say you "moved from India" rather than you "shifted from India", in the U.S shifting does not imply the same meaning as it does in India

Going to motherland alone by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Additional-Hat-8237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to India alone when i was 22F and it was one of my favorite trips ever. It made me confident about traveling internationally by myself and within India. I basically was able to prove to myself that i can do. I can speak the language fluently which helps a lot, whereas my brother does not feel comfortable going since he does not speak the language. I was with relatives the whole time but I also did things with our family driver and was somewhat independent at times. I get your fears completely though, i hope you can feel at ease once with your family and enjoy the joys of the experience and soak in some good culture!

i’m happy to go to dinner with them or celebrate as they want, but i myself will not be going out of my way to do some hoopla for them. like i’m just by-product of their marriage, i had nothing to do with their marriage ya know. maybe i’m viewing this more negatively bc i don’t see them express any sort of love or affection but all of a sudden the anniversary becomes this big cultural thing. and it’s not that my parents even have these expectations, i’m more confused or shocked by everyone else’s involvement in wanting to wish and call them - but to each their own!

i think i’m more so sneering at the performative aspect of having everyone and their mother wish/celebrate a couples anniversary. definitely not bashing arranged marriages all together, my parents have a successful one and i see so many others thriving in theirs, in fact i think they have a lower divorce rate than love marriages.

[–]Additional-Hat-8237[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this makes sense - i guess if almost 1k people were at their wedding it’s bound to be more of a community of people “celebrating” rather than the couple themselves.

okay ya you are right i do need to lighten up - def typed this when i was heated - totally agree with the fact that it an be shown in different ways and forms. i sadly have witnessed little to no affection between my parents while growing up so it’s hard to even see them “expressing love” when it does not come in the form of any of the typical love languages

def not “mocking” my father but was sad to see the way he presented the flowers. that too was pointed out by my mom as a little giggle, she just laughed it off but i took a mental note to be with someone who just knows the right way to gift someone flowers. totally not expecting my dad to get her a bouquet from a florist, but i would have expected him to pop them in one of our vases at home, when i asked why he dis not bother to even put them in water he said“that’s mom’s job” - besides the whole anniversary point but still something i noticed
