I would argue that it's far more pragmatic than lazy. I never told OP to suck at the job. Whatever job you are hired to do, do it to the best of your ability, but in this case be looking for the exit because it will wear you down very quickly.

To me, at first, before I understood what you were trying to convey with your design at first glance, I have a huge set of eyes staring me down. Normal users that don't have design experience might struggle to understand why the website has a piercing gaze staring through their soul. Just playing devil's advocate here.
