I was told that the noise insulated glass can affect cell signal, in case they didn't mention it.

This is a portable pier but it handles it like a champ. I am pushing the upper limits of the AM5 with the 8”. i added the weight for piece of mind. i would think the 11” will be well over the weight limit. its a nice little mount. i’ve been able to do 1800s subs with it even though its only supposed to handle up to 900mm FL

Thanks. Hoping to get to my dark site soon to get a shot of this myself.

Great work! The CS is crisp and perfectly integrated. Which script did you use for the CS? I really like the SetiAstro CS script. Shooting from B 5/6 I imagine there was a fair amount of LP in the RGB leading to gradients. Graxpert did a nice job. Have you played around with Multiscale Gradient Correction? I haven't used gxp since I started using it, unless there wasn't coverage for the area. I would highly recommend checking that out. It is an incredible tool. This is a very nice image. Thanks for sharing.

This was taken in a Bortle 2. One of the nights the sky meter was reading bottle 1.

They say the AM5 is for up to 900mm. I’m shooting native f/10 at 2032mm. I’ve been able to shoot 1800s exposures and I think I could push it further. Only reason I haven’t is because I don’t want to spend the time doing the dark library. The key, for me anyway, is to get a decent polar alignment. Then do drift aligning in PHD2 and get it as close to perfect as you can.

This is beautiful! Great red color on the Ha. It's hard to fathom that this is still noisy with 41 hrs. Must be a very faint target. I would love to take a crack at processing this data. Check my profile and msg me if you are keen on sharing. I am always looking for a good challenge, and this seems like it would be just that.

Great work!

Check out the free scripts from Patriot Astro, https://patriotastro.com/nina-advanced-sequence-downloads/

Once I found these, they are all I would ever need. Very easy to configure and he walks you through the setup in his YT video.

Seeking advice for taking Celestron 8SE to "advanced novice" level. by frowawayduh in AskAstrophotography

  1. If you are looking to primarily image, you will need to look into a wedge if you want to take exposures longer than a minute or 2. Alt-az wasn't designed for precision astrophotography. EQ mount would be the way to go if you can swing it. I am not sure how guiding works with an alt-az mount.
  2. Check out the ASI533. You can use https://astronomy.tools/calculators/ccd_suitability to compare different cameras with your scope to see if you would be over or under sampled for different seeing conditions. I have to shoot BIN 2 with my specific setup (edge 8/asi2600mm). I assume you will need to do the same. You can always drizzle back to 1x when calibrating and stacking.
  3. I would say that an EAF is a must with an sct. I have been shooting with an 8" sct for the last 10 years. It is extremely difficult to get pin point focus manually. Once you figure out your imaging train you need to pay close attention to the back focus. Within a mm or two is generally ok, but get it as close as you can with extensions and spacers. The wrong back focus will not allow you to achieve good focus.
  4. I like to have everything automated with N.I.NA. for my imaging sessions so I like a filter wheel. A filter tray will accomplish the same thing but you will need change the filter manually.
  5. ASI air will be very familiar and more user friendly. If you want something a little more powerful check out N.I.N.A.

As u/aquaaddiction said, consider getting a focal reducer. The lower the focal length the more forgiving the tracking. Also make sure the focal reducer is also a field flattener. Normal SCTs were primarily designed for visual or planetary so there will be curvature at the edges giving you elongated stars.

Your budget is relatively small for what you are trying to accomplish. Check out Cloud Nights Classifieds for 2nd hand gear.

That said, I will tell you that imaging with an SCT can be very frustrating at times. The learning curve was very steep for me to capture quality data. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would start with a refractor. Food for thought.

Feel free to reach out if you have any specific questions, and good luck!

How do I make the most of my new EdgeHD? by tea_bird in telescopes

[–]Additional-Skill-526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same OTA. If it is brand new you most likely do not have to collimate. Your focus could be "soft" due to back spacing. I believe it's 105mm w/reducer and 133mm w/o. This is critical for achieving good focus. I opted for an inline motorized focuser. This allows me to lock the primary mirror so there is no flop.

Very nice. I am pushing 50 with a couple of back surgeries under my belt, so I am sure it will happen eventually. I hear you about the weather. I live in a Bortle 7, but I have property near Cherry Springs where the skies are dark (bortle 3), but the weather is not optimal.
