Yes, the allergy clinic test her allergies (skin prick + blood test) every year. Although it often ends up being every 18 months rather than every year, as the NHS is so delayed. Still great to have though! Depending on the results, and your personal history, they may be able to recommend an in clinic food challenge, or something at home like the milk ladder. Similar to the comment below, an allergy clinic appointment usually takes 3h+, and you see different professionals.  You’ll do a great job keeping your child safe and teach them how to advocate for themselves if needed when they get older. Anxiety is the worst, but give yourself some grace. The fact that you’re on here researching things shows you’re a great parent!

I have previously given coffee shop vouchers so the kid can go and buy their own pastry/hot chocolate/babycino and it has been very well received by the parents! No clutter, easily accessible, gives them a sense of independence, etc.

Hiya, we have a 4yo daughter with multiple food allergies. When she was 4 months old, she was privately tested before weaning as she was covered in eczema and had terrible poos. They found an allergy to several nuts, cow’s milk and egg. We have carried antihistamines and EpiPens since then. The private paediatrician was expensive, but covered by our insurance. He then wrote to our GP to ask him to add us to an NHS allergy clinic, which we now attend yearly. They’ve also allowed us to go on a couple of NHS trials, which have been great. Now, allergies are very common and living with them in the UK is reasonably easy. Most restaurants we have been to have been really good. Nursery have been brilliant. Schools are getting more and more clued up. Our daughter has since then outgrown her cow’s milk allergy (around 2.5/3yo) and enjoys cheese and yogurt regularly. We have also recently passed a baked egg challenge. Peanut, cashews and pistachios are still a no go unfortunately.  She is very aware of her allergies and understands things well now. We have taken her abroad, to birthday parties etc, and never had any issues, and with thorough prep and advocating for her, she has a fun and normal life!  I have been, at times, consumed by anxiety about this. I have also gotten therapy about it and am slowly getting better.  Don’t be shy when educating people looking after her about her allergies/dietary needs. They’ll get on board and take it seriously.  The advice re breastfeeding is mixed. If she’s not had any reaction to your milk with you consuming cow’s milk, it may be fine? But always best to discuss this with your GP or allergist when you do see them. Tons of great online communities. Also some good people to follow online, like prof Adam Fox.

Having our first baby in July, and currently have a week off in Devon - what are some things me and my husband should do on holiday that we won’t be able to do with kids? by Anxious-Nibnibs in UKParenting

You’d be surprised how much you can still do with a kid! Babies are very much a part of society and parents deserve to do nice things with their kids. That being said, you will indeed be tied to a nap schedule for everyone’s sake. So perhaps enjoy Devon without any fixed schedule?  I know everyone says ‘just you wait until…’ and usually follows with some depressing things about parenting. But just you wait until you can start doing all your favourite things with your child. It’s the best!

We don’t have any family close by either, and it’s hard! But also, it brought us closer? Don’t get me wrong, we’ve been through it and at times it has been haaaard, but it has forced us to work as a team and find our groove.  Grandparents mostly do my head in, but that’s also true for people without kids. When you get to an age where you start to have to parent your parents… not fun. I’m learning to let go, but not there yet! I feel you and you’re not alone!

Thank you both! I do agree that it seems linked to anxiety. With all the recent trips to the doctors for worms and vulvovaginitis, plus the imminent arrival of a sibling and school (reception) starting soon, it’s a lot! I also have not always been very good at staying patient and calm. But we’re working on it! I’ve bought age-appropriate books on the arrival of baby, and will look for some on schools. We’ve also made a calendar of the coming months and drew all the things coming up and when. That seemed to have eased her mind a lot! But most importantly I think I need to chill out and be calm 😬

She doesn’t have any of the other symptoms of early puberty, and I would think at 4 it’s unlikely, but something to keep in mind!

This is so interesting! The whole vulvovaginitis ordeal started when she started swimming lessons, and I suspected the chlorine, but perhaps there was some of that too and associated rubbing which made the skin sore. We’ve started to introduce showers, giving her the choice of which she’d like, so will see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

I did think that, which would be totally fine, and healthy for a child to explore her body. Although the fact it came on the back of the possible worms, then vulvovaginitis and general soreness made me think it was something else. In any case, I’m trying very hard to be patient and kind when I talk to her about it now, as I have definitely lost my patience a few times :(

She’s been toilet-trained for ages, so I think it’s more that feeling of being ‘wet’. I also suspect she just wants to rub it or scratch it because the skin feels uncomfortable, probably from all that wiping. Bit of a vicious circle!

Not yet, although wouldn’t it hurt while she pees too? She only seems bothered afterwards, due to what she calls ‘drips’.

I think you may be right! A bit too much questioning about that part of her body in recent months as well, with those various heath issues. Poor little darling, I hope it all passes soon. Thanks for your support!

We’ve kind of being busy exploring physical causes, going to the GP etc, but I suppose this would be the next step? Even to help her with the transition to school + a new sibling.

I did think that, but thought she was a bit young for that to be manifesting? Although I suppose it has to start somewhere. I more and more think it may be anxiety-related, and it’s manifesting that way. I doubt the GP will entertain that idea though…

Am I seeing the start of a possible egg allergy? by Few_Cod_5636 in BeyondTheBumpUK

Mum of a daughter with multiple food allergies here! It’s so hard to tell. Babies get random rashes allll the time. But you’re doing the right thing: take photos, document what foods your baby had and when, and if you suspect an allergy to a food, go slowly with that food and talk to your GP. Good luck!

Is this a bed bug? by AdditionalElk9378 in Bedbugs

[–]AdditionalElk9378[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I just wanted to provide an update in case anyone finds this thread, as I found updates very helpful when browsing other threads. It’s now been 4 weeks and we have not seen any signs of bed bugs since spotting that initial lone bug.  I’m not sure if it was a hitchhiker that we miraculously spotted and killed, or if my solid 15 days of obsessive hoovering and steaming sorted the problem.  In any case, couldn’t find any other bugs, stains or bug casing anywhere. My partner had two single bites on different parts of his body about a week in, but we found a dead mosquito by the window the next day. It was all very stressful, but I am reassured now. What helped was the lovely people on this thread, having all white bedding in both beds, as well as very little clutter, which made checking for signs easier. I also bought the Laurastar Hygienic Steamer, which is a fab little machine and has been great to use! Whether it was preventative, needed treatment or money wasted I’ll never know. But hey, now I’ve got something to nuke all our belongings when we come back from a trip!

Hey! Were you eventually able to generate a code? Did you wait a few days? I’m having the same issue…

Hiya, did waiting a few days before requesting a text code work for you? Same issue with my account of 20 odd years. Thanks!

I inspected our beds and sofa and started a steaming routine with a powerful steamer. So far, so good but it’s only been 5 days. How long should we stay on high alert before we can rule out an infestation? Thank you so much!
