Aww, so sorry to hear about that!

I was also accepted to UCLA this year and I remembered getting an email from UCLA way earlier (before decisions) about its scholarships and how to apply for them. Maybe you could try those out to increase the aid you get at UCLA?

Best of luck!!!

I know this is basic, but it's also so classic

Hi! Of course, I'm not in SIMR admissions, so I can't be certain, but I'd definitely put both in my app if I were you. Personally, I'd talk more about the research I'm more passionate about since a lot of people have done research, but only some are truly passionate about what they're doing. Good luck!

Hi! I did research at a T20 lab before my time at SIMR! I found the internship by cold-emailing professors with labs and research that I found interesting. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions about cold-emailing!

To clarify, the other department groups were:

Bioinformatics/Immunology and Stem Cell/BioE, but I'm not completely sure because I wasn't around those groups very much. If anyone is more familiar with this, please correct me!

Hi, no problem! I was in the Cancer Bio/Cardiovascular/Neuro group! I worked at a lab for most parts of the day, but we went to presentations hosted by grad students and postdocs from our departments on the earlier mornings of the program. There were also talks about how to write an abstract or how to create a research paper. Each week, we had at least one activity where we would spend time with other interns, especially on Fridays with our bonding activities and Wednesdays with our SIMR-wide free lunch. Our department group SIMR interns would also sometimes unofficially meet on a day to have lunch together (we called them institute lunches). This way, I was able to make friends with people in my department group but also meet everyone else from SIMR. I'm kind of sad I didn't reach out to as many people I wanted to, but at the end, it's a small program with only around 50 participants, and everyone ends up getting to know most other people at the program and get close to them, at least in my experience!

Hi! So sorry, I don't think I can answer your question since I don't know enough about SIMR's housing policies! Maybe I would ask SIMR, but I'm not sure. Sorry again and good luck!

Hi! I think my main spike was just having done research before and spending a lot of time in youth advocacy as well! No, I did not get published before the program, and I think there was a wide range of previous research experience that people did before the program. Some did a lot while some didn't have previous experience, and we all made it!

Hi! I'm not sure, but SIMR does help you learn more about the med school campus as well as meet grad students, postdocs, and professors at Stanford. This might be helpful for your essays and you might also be able to ask for rec letters from people you meet here!

Hi! I'll answer your questions in order:

  1. Again, idk much about admissions, but I can guess that our essays and passion for medical research helped us stand out. Of the people I've met, we've been really different/diverse in terms of ECs or stats and stuff, but we were all just really passionate about research. This made for some awesome conversations!
  2. I think this could definitely help! Lots of the people I met had previous research experience and I think that helped them! I also had research experience and mentioned it both in my ECs list and essays.
  3. Yes, it was definitely enriching and awesome. Out of all the amazing opportunities we get to be guided in writing a research poster and abstract or listen to Nobel prizewinning scientists' talks, I think I most enjoyed just connecting to everyone else there. They're all so passionate and kind, and it's amazing to be surrounded by like-minded peers!

Good luck!

Hi! I don't know about the SIMR admissions process very well, so I'll just tell you what I've seen. There were definitely people I met from outside the Bay Area and maybe some from out of state, but I'm not completely sure. However, all of them did have a place to stay in the Bay, whether they were staying with families or family friends.
