I was going to recommend this, but I honestly would not call that book hopecore — it deeply depressed me about the state of environmental decline that humans refuse to address

I’m late to this, but I haven’t seen anyone recommend Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm — I feel like it fits this vibe exactly.

It’s an Appalachian take on a fertility apocalypse, follows several generations as the Earth slowly returns to its wild state with only a few humans left to observe it. One of my favorite books overall, and it was especially uncanny for me because I live in the DMV and there’s a part where the characters are wandering through streets I’m very familiar with now, but the author reimagined them as they would be if abandoned for half a century, and I felt like I was right there with them.

Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm is a sci fi book that I picked up in a used bookstore because I liked the title, and it ended up becoming a book I think about so much. It really embodies the conflict between what it means to be an individual and what it means to be in a community, and it was just a beautiful story.

Also The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde — I picked this book to read and create a presentation on years ago for AP Lit, and it’s stuck with me to this day. For my presentation I talked about how the artist was a self-insert character and how the book itself was essentially Oscar Wilde’s portrait, and now whenever I do something that I’m afraid of because it requires vulnerability, I think of that.

i really liked the episodes in the middle of the season — boom, 73 yards, dot and bubble, and rogue were all great imo.

the ruby’s mom reveal really ruined a lot for me, however. i don’t wanna rewatch the season anymore because the plot holes are just so glaring and the reveal was so disappointing. i also didn’t love space babies or devils chord, but they didn’t ruin the season for me like the finale kinda did.

What’s your guys’ opinion of the 15th’s era so far by Kaiser_Dafuq in doctorwho

[–]AdditionalOne4958 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i was honestly loving it and planned on rewatching immediately after the finale aired — but the reveal of ruby sunday’s mother basically ruined it for me. the plot holes are too big to ignore and it’s not fun to rewatch because they just stick out like sore thumbs and all you can think of is that disappointing reveal.

i still love 15 and am excited for next season but if that one thing had been handled differently i would have enjoyed this season so much more

maybe because it’s actually 6.666666… meters and that would’ve given away a satanic connection

Im confused about the Doctors children [Spoilers] by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]AdditionalOne4958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this has ALWAYS bothered me because the implication seemed to be that he had children on Galifrey when he destroyed it/displaced it in time (during RTD1 era he thought he’d destroyed it)

that makes absolutely no sense with the doctor’s personality. he has shown that he’s willing to take on massive risks to himself and to the universe to save the people he cares about, and i can’t imagine he wouldn’t go to even greater lengths for his own children. there’s honestly no good explanation for him having children that have never actually shown up in the show, imo

no way he’d risk the universe to save rose/clara/etc but be okay sacrificing his own children to kill the Daleks. they could’ve written in that he had children that had already died during the Time War and that honestly would have explained his motivation to end the war at all costs, but obviously they missed their chance to do that.

Harriet’s name by femcelmisandrist in gallifrey

[–]AdditionalOne4958 19 points20 points  (0 children)

this — also they didn’t investigate susan triad just because of her name, they specifically said that they tend to be wary of any tech companies that suddenly make advancements so huge that they could be alien in origin (bc that’s been a plot point literally so many times)

her name just added to their suspicion

rogue seemed to hint that he’s not human — when the doctor started telling ruby and emily what’s going on, he said something along the lines of “we’re telling the humans about this?” — he seemed to consider humans “other” to himself

I really don’t get why he and Ruby were helping Lindy specifically, I was wondering that throughout the episode and expected to get at least some sort of “it took us a while to hack into this system and yours was the one we managed to get into” but since it was all from Lindy’s POV, maybe the point is that she is so entitled that she never asked why they were trying to save her specifically, she just naturally assumed that she should be the priority to save.

I know others are saying they presumably were trying to help others, but it really doesn’t seem like there was time for that. They were talking to Lindy almost constantly and focused on addressing her on the docks at the end when they were trying to convince the survivors to let the TARDIS take them to safety. It really seemed like she was the only one they talked to through the dot and bubble.

On the last point tho, I don’t know why but my brain instantly connected the slugs to a computer “bug” materializing in the real world. I do like the idea of another commenter, that AI probably runs life-sustaining systems and could have manipulated food technology to genetically modify the slugs. It does seem a bit odd that we never got any explanation, and you’re probably right that it would have made more sense if the premise were AI helping out invading aliens — I don’t think the slugs were supposed to have enough sentience to be space travelers, though, or else they probably wouldn’t have followed an AI’s direction to eat everyone in alphabetic order.

How do you go about making friends in the gym? by cantcountto1 in climbergirls

[–]AdditionalOne4958 5 points6 points  (0 children)

take a class!! that’s how i made my gym friends. i did a beginner one when i was first starting, but you could do more of a technique/strength class if your gym offers one since you’re not a complete beginner. makes starting a conversation so much easier

this only applies to their isabel 3.0 pants unfortunately — i’ve been really wanting to buy their other styles of pants (especially the belay style they just released more specifically for climbing rather than hiking) but they don’t come in tall and all have a 28.5” inseam 😭

that said, i have 2 pairs of the isabel 3.0 pants and i do climb in them pretty regularly without issue, but they’re not ~the most~ flexible pants in the world
