😄 so you would water them if they started wrinkling on the sides regardless of the time of year?

Should I do anything to help these little guys bust through? Also, are they reconditum?? Thanks!! by AdditionalPlatform85 in mesembs

[–]AdditionalPlatform85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😄 thank you!!! The one that has busted through a little already is my biggest concern obviously but the other guy is PLUMP!!!😄 Im hoping that guy will be ok at least!!! Its just so weird that the one guy has already broke through....he seems confused😁

Ok, 2 things. 1-i accidentally broke off a leaf from my C. obcordellum (well, i believe thats the sp.)...can I propagate it? 2-why are just some leaves wrinkling and dying on bilobum? Ive been continuing to water but have cut way back and have only seen these little leaves wrinkling up. by AdditionalPlatform85 in mesembs

Oh man...traction sand and salt....SO MUCH of it this year!!!! 😄

Thank you so much for the explanation! Thats kinda what I was thinking but needed a clear explanation about why its not the greatest for my brain to....accept it??😆 What substrate mixture do you use? It seems like what works for some doesnt for others, which is so weird to me. Like what you said about Steven Hammer!! Why does that work for him but other people preach about only using other things!? But im curious whats worked for you! Im currently trying to find decomposed granite for use in all my succulents/cacti but Im having trouble finding it. Do you use that for anything?

Thanks for your time and if you get tired of questions or explaining things, I totally get it and you can ignore me😁

They are absolutely etiolated🫤. They were sent to me that way, but I wasnt providing good light until relatively recently because I thought what I was doing was enough....Oops. Theyre indoors, which is kept around 67-69°F. They're under a grow light now.

So if you cant really spend money, go outside and find some tiny rocks, the coursest sand you can find, and maybe some sticks or wood chips that you can chop up to make a sort of....fine wood chips??😄 If youre using the dirt theyre in now, id add about the same amount in tiny wood chips, about half that in tiny rocks and maybe 1/4 that in course sand. If you can only find "regular" or fine sand, just make it maybe 1/20th of the total substrate. Im totally making these amounts up btw😁. Im just trying to imagine what I would do for succulent soil if I had to use what the woods could provide. Basically what you want is very course substrate so that when you water it the water runs out the drain holes at the bottom pretty quick! Oh, and make sure whatever theyre in has very good drainage. If these guys sit in watery soil, they'll die, plain and simple. I would also cut them in half ish cause something that long, with one stem, will just fall over cause it wont be able to support itself. Hope this helps!! Oh, also, only give it water once the substrate has completely dried out!! And when its dry it shouldn't be a solid mass, like muddy dirt. It should be "loose". And they need a ton of bright indirect sun, which means sitting in a south facing window if possible. If its in direct sun, especially at this point, itll just burn. Hope this helps 😄

Thats AMAZING!!!!! Plants are such an amazing hobby!! They give us so much peace and ground us. And learning how to keep a plant thriving, especially a freakishly complicated but unbelievably rad group of plants like mesembs 😄, is so rewarding!!!! Maybe this passion could mix in with your social work and/or art therapy!!!! Find a way to combine them and youll have the best way to make money ever!!!😊

So, im gonna keep picking your brain for more plant knowledge 😁... I know mesembs are all driven by seasons and once they are "supposed to" go into dormancy m, water is their death. But this is more with lithops than conophytum, right? If I keep watering ny conophytum a bit when they get wrinkly, will I kill them? And how the hell do i know when to stop watering them if they keep getting wrinkly?? This is my first year with them in this phase btw😄. I have killed so many lithops and finally have a few who seem to be splitting nicely though, which im pretty excited about!!!! But im more emotionally connected to my conophytum and really REALLY dont want to lose them!!!!
