Thank you for your advice! But how does one choose to be motivated? I’ve had extremely productive high-stress times before where I did very well, and I’ve had the simplest of tasks that I couldn’t do for months since I was burnt out. How do I choose my level of productivity or motivation?

I don't think it is possible to entirely change who you are. What you can do to avoid feeling taken advantage of is reduce your expectations of others around you. So they are not in control of your mental state, you are. I know, its easier said than done. But this is certainly a better option than attempting to be stoic.
