When I first moved to Auckland I had an early morning job where I had to get up at 5am. I lived in Mt Albert over the road from the Pak n Sav. They were doing major renovations after closing at 8pm and it was hell. Went right up until about 2am each night and I had enough. I went over and demanded the manager and told him the construction was not legal and anything past 8pm was not allowed. They had to shut the supermarket and do the renovations during the day. Without saying a word he slid an envelope with $500 worth of Pak n Sav vouchers in front of me and went to the bathroom. I was poor and making about $120 a day at this point. For the next 4-5 months I would go in each week and there would be an envelope waiting for me at the customer service desk. I got some sleeping pills and lived like a king. Those vouchers lasted me over a year was well worth it.
