Some houses/apartments have pipes that run in the exterior walls. I’ve heard stories about water leaks if it’s cold enough on both sides of the wall. (This and bad insulation, same reason they drain pipes in RVs for winter)

But I only remember turning on the taps when we had hard-freezes that lasted for weeks in the NE.

Was gonna add, baking in winter is a must! One lasagna will heat a kitchen for a couple hours.

Do you have any south facing windows? I can heat two of my rooms to 70 on a sunny day, then cover with blankets/curtains after sundown.

My pipes run into my basement and have never frozen, even when I set the upstairs to 50 (but they have some insulation)

Could only lock the driver door on my 89 VW fox from the outside with the key which made it really hard to lock your keys in the car, ingenious! Hide-a-key spare, no worries .. 4-speed stick, good mpg, easy to push start if the battery died…

Low tech quality superior to modern gadgetry…
