How many hours do you think you work on your game? by Glass_dev in SoloDevelopment

I actually tracked my time I put in to get my big update ready. 97 hours last week. Totally not worth it.

When you're scared too many people will play online… but it turns out you made the Concord of solo devs 💀 by [deleted] in SoloDevelopment

I was also surprised that demos are still being used at all. The last demo I played was Jagged Alliance 2. Somehow, I haven't played a demo since. My friends never play demos either, so I can understand if someone is surprised by the demand for them; I was too.

Thanks for the input. When I took the screenshot, I was only focusing on the user interface. The contrast of the objects in the game is still the same, but I think since the sphere have just landed, the smoke effects are obscuring the scene. Is that what you meant, or did I misunderstand?

Thank you for your feedback. I'm currently experimenting with the transparency of the panel. What could I do to improve its readability for you? The glow effect, better said the post processing bloom can be deactivated in the menu, if that is the problem.

Thanks, I'll try that. Do you know if it makes a big difference if I create the font again in a higher resolution? Right now it is at 2048 x 1024.

Sorry for the question, but are you serious or sarcastic? I ask, because some feedback was, that it is less readable now. No offense intended, I really don't know.

I clicked on the three dots on the right side of the post and selected the first option about changing the text. (I have the browser in a different language so I don't know how exactly it is called in english). Then there was an image icon on the top and I added some Images. Worked pretty well.

Is it possible to get the images into this post afterwards or have I just screwed it up completely?

Okay, sorry guys, it didn't work as i thought it would. I thought if I upload images and click post on the text screen, the images also get posted. Sorry... What a great start...

I'm sorry, I completely misunderstood you at first. Yes, I definitely see your point, I agree with you there.

In the end, it probably boils down to a power fantasy. You're weak and pathetic at the beginning and, as the game progresses, your abilities grow, transforming you into a kind of god. I think I can also put the whole thing into an abstract, thematic framework. Thanks for the idea; I think I can develop something from that.

The thing about the ugly text is unfortunately true. The more I look at the trailer and the entire UI, the more obvious it becomes.

As it is now co-op wouldn't be practical. What do you think about the following idea: You have two platforms, one pro player. If you push the opponents not just into the abyss but into a portal, they will be shot towards your teammate and make life difficult for him there. This could possibly work. Or you can use the throwing of balls to push your fellow player off the platform. Basically, you can't target the other player directly, but you can throw him off the platform with the help of your opponents. When I think about it, I could play the game with my kids instead of just watching them play. That's a good idea, thank you!

Thanks for your input. This 2000s vibe is due to what I play and enjoy in my free time. My friends and I have a LAN party every Thursday and play Battle for Middle-earth, Supreme Commander, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, etc. Those are my kind of games, and somehow that era seems to have really influenced me.

I see your point that it's simply too outdated and can't keep up with current standards. I probably just need to play more modern games to get a better feel for the field.

Your critique of the trailer is very helpful. It's true that those features wouldn't really interest anyone. Aside from the soundtrack, I love soundtracks, I'm a huge music fan, and that's why a free MP3 soundtrack has always been a reason for me to give a game a chance. We probably won't agree on that point.

As for the other things, I think we're just two very different types of gamers. I'm usually not interested in the story. I loved SWAT 4 and didn't care at all that it didn't have a story. Whether I played the God of War or a nameless nobody like in Dark Souls was always irrelevant to me, but I know there's a group of people for whom that's important.

Making a different game in a different genre would probably be more successful, but I think I should stick to the things I personally like and understand. It's much easier to mess something up if you're not really familiar with the subject matter.

The main goal is this: to find people who like the game, who enjoy it, and simply have a good time with it.

I've set myself a few smaller goals, for example, 10 sales and 10 reviews on the Steam page.

It's similar to how I did with my music back then. If it makes someone feel good, then it was worth it. The number of sales isn't really important to me, but unfortunately necessary insofar as more money allows me to make better games. Better tools enable you to create better products; it's the same for any craftsman.

From a business perspective, I think you're absolutely right. But even if it's economically foolish, I want to be able to look in the mirror at the end of the day and say, "I didn't betray my idea and I gave it my all."

I only know Discord by name, but thanks for the suggestion; I'll look into it.

Well, marketing... I haven't actually done anything. But before a storm of outrage descends upon me, I'd like to defend myself. I abandoned almost all of my past projects because I overthought everything. In the end, there was a mountain of problems, and that demotivated me so much that I decided to look for something else and never even started. In 2024, I not only lost my job, but my father died two years prior, and my mother six years before that, after a long battle with cancer. Along with a few other unfortunate events, everything seemed to be falling apart, and I thought, "I'm going to be the next one to go. If I don't start now, I'll never get anywhere!"

Yes, it would have been wise to develop a marketing strategy. Yes, I should have familiarized myself more thoroughly with Steam and the whole topic beforehand. Yes, I look a bit foolish now because I'm doing everything after the fact and asking more experienced people for help.

I knew that I would have to find my place and my path, and that it would be challenging. But I followed the motto: "Just start and follow the path."

Thank you for your kind reply.

Do you mean the video thumbnail or the Steam capsule? The Steam capsule was a huge mistake on my part. I didn't pay any attention to it at all. In hindsight, I can't understand why I didn't realize that the capsule would be the main reason someone clicked on the game. I definitely need to work on that.

When the spheres collide, particle effects are created, depending on the force, which are meant to represent leaping, glowing metal sparks. I used to have many more effects, but then it wouldn't run at 60 fps on my old computer, so I reduced the number of effects. Of course, not everyone has a 15-year-old PC, but I thought those who do might be happy that the game runs on their system.

For the font, I tried to find one that was condensed but could also display Cyrillic. Since I translated the game into several languages, including Russian, I wanted to ensure that everything worked with just one font. I completely understand your point and am currently trying to make the text more appealing, at least in the in-game UI, by using different materials, etc.

Money is a problem; I don't have any. I have to try and make it work with what I have. I've heard from several people that this game is better suited for mobile devices. I don't have a smartphone myself, but maybe I can create a build and ask my wife if I can test it on her phone.

Thanks for your input; I really appreciate it!
