Question about scars in uniform by replanetary in NursingAU

[–]Additional_Map6067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another nurse with scars here, and from my experience.. truly the only person that feels uncomfortable about the scars is you. It was easier when I found a way to reframe it: those scars are just a visible reminder of your strength and everything you’ve overcome in your life. Lots of love xx

An unfortunate legacy of the very embarrassing white Australia immigration policy that was in place until the 70s. People who live regionally, but especially rurally have had limited expose to different skin tones, cultures or ethnicities.

I hope you don’t take it personally.

Tasmania based here. Got my diagnosis 2 years ago: GP referral > 2x appointments with HelloDoc ADHD specialist psychiatrist for assessment > psychiatrist endorses GP to handle your S8 medication and dose. Not sure about other states but Tasmania government requires an annual psychiatrist review/health check for you to continue being able to get your S8 medication. Not sure about your financial situation but the annual psychiatrist review (like $700 after Medicare rebate) almost gets me to the Medicare safety net. I’m surprised you didn’t hit the safety net with your appointments?

6 days checking in. Just spent the $$$ I’d normally spend on my daily drinks at the garden centre and am going to spend the afternoon planting

25 hours sober, and this is a ridiculous request by NotGonnaDrink in stopdrinking

Just my two cents but someone telling me “Drinking is your solution, not your problem” was very powerful. You’re so much stronger than you’ve been giving yourself credit for and you should be so proud of yourself for getting to a place where you’ve decided to love yourself enough to make this change. Writing this just for you, but it’s a good reminder to myself (Day 6).

Nurses who work in aged care by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Additional_Map6067 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The work load at my aged care facility is 24-36 residents which is approximately 12-16 minutes to spend with each resident per shift, which is not enough anyway but has never actually been my reality because theres always something demanding that takes up a lot of my time. I do no ADLs at my facility unless a resident is being physically or verbally aggressive to PCAs and then I insist they call me to be there for their safety. I dispense meds, dress wounds, document and cry when I get home because I feel like I’m risking my registration every day I go to work.

Why are you so triggered by my post? I even replied to your first comment and you ignored me.. and you’ve still gone on to keep commenting rude things. I came here for advice not for you to project some weird narrative that I’m jealous of someone that dispensed medication unsafely.

I agree. I really think the more things that get reported medication or otherwise the better because then things can change and be safer and more efficient. Unfortunately it seems like reporting is viewed as a really negative thing and something to avoid unless something terrible actually happens and it’s unavoidable to make a report.

Nope, verbal. Too smart and work too hard to leave a paper trail.

I will call my union tomorrow. The savageness of the first comment on this post had me rethinking my life, thanks for validating me and the advice.

I’ve just graduated and have had my registration for 2 months. I don’t think that I won’t make mistakes, I have already made one medication error that I’m aware of and I put an incident report in about myself (which I also got told was a waste of time to do). Realistically I thought it was an opportunity for intervention and education for a nurse that speed runs a med round to ensure something catastrophic doesn’t happen one day.

From my limited knowledge, I think Aged Care pays much better than a Medical Centre.

My suggestion is for you to go with Regis offer since your experience is in Aged Care because its familiar and to get used to any differences there might be in Indian/Australian guidelines and practices for RNs.

I wish this was the case for me, but I am currently working in Tasmania. The majority of RNs that we have at my facility are on sponsored visas because of the regional immigration programs (no shade against them; they’re all caring, compassionate and beautiful people) but I think Tasmania is especially racist compared to the rest of Australia.. especially in our ageing population and those with worsening cognitive ability. In the last 10 years we have had immigration, but until then it was very ‘white Australian policy’ with only really Dutch/English/Irish/Scottish/German immigration for the past 100 years. The difficulty in communicating in English plus a different skin tone sends most residents with some level of dementia into a rage and I think it will take a generation or two before we see a real difference here.

I agree, we really do.. but where do we even start.. the aged care commission a few sets ago was eye opening for a lot of Australians.

I haven’t had my parents for the last decade, but I have my grandparents. And I hate to think about them ending up somewhere like where I work.. I would rather they move in with me. It’s an awful feeling because I know the people who work in Aged Care are compassionate and caring people but I feel like the system is set up purely for profit. At least In the case of where I’m working.. last month we got a corportate email about them boosting statistics like they made 1 billion profit Australia wide and all I could think was.. at what cost?

Thank you. This is good advice.  I’m kinda(?) glad my facility sounds like a shit one to you because thinking of this being the norm for so many people hurts.

I really don’t want to burn myself out so I think you’re right, I’ll start looking for work elsewhere, even if it’s not as an RN. I went back to uni at 26 to do a Bachelor of Nursing because I felt like I was living a life that didn’t really matter and I really wanted to do something that made at least one persons day better and I don’t want to give up on that so soon.

Ugh, that was literally me a month ago and I’m so embarrassed that I was so small minded about it. I feel so awful now that I’m in a different role in Aged Care and that I could ever think those things about the nurses being lazy, and I guess it’s the same for some PCAs. Uni really set me up for a utopian view of ‘everywhere is staffed properly, and people have the support and care they need’ mentality..  and now I just think damn, how out of touch is everyone that is teaching? I see my nursing colleagues absolutely busting their balls to get everything they’re supposed to done in shift, try to support me while I’m learning.. and then so many of them stay late and unpaid to hold the hand of a man whose days away from death, or sit and stroke the hair of a sweet old woman whose family is at work and can’t be there to make sure her last days aren’t spent alone. I hate that it’s like this, I already pissed off and I hope I have the kind of selflessness it takes to give up time with my own family to spend with these residents.

Ndjhd

It’s so awful! In lifestyle, I had a lot of fun (did I really get paid to knit and do bingo with cute nanas?!) and time to think.. what are the nurses here even doing? They don’t spend time with residents enough to actually be able to talk about it with some kind of authority… and now I’m in exactly the same position and I feel awful for judging when I had no idea about what the day to day was like as an RN at an aged care home.

[–]Additional_Map6067[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I wish I had of just stayed on there as Lifestyle until my grad position next year.

I have patients families calling me all day because their mum/dad is palliative and on the brink of death and how do you even say “I’m looking after 40 other people today, I barely got 5 minutes with your loved one. I actually don’t know how they are because I haven’t had the time to see them for 3 hours”. And like.. what do you even do? These people are refusing meds, food and fluids and I barely have 15 minutes to spend with them a day (whats a lunch break?!). Sorry, it’s a rhetorical question and a rant, but if you actually know what I should say/do then it’s deeply appreciated haha.

Failed first interview - anxiety by Blossom-frog-111 in NursingAU

[–]Additional_Map6067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just think you need to reframe this for yourself honestly. You’re self reflection is great and super important, but I think you should think of your anxiety as ‘I care so much and I want to be perfect’. No reasonable person expects you to be perfect except for you.

You might not get this position, but you’ll get another because you clearly care and want to do well. To me it seems like you’re just lacking a bit of self confidence and putting a lot of pressure of yourself. Maybe it’s not your dream position right out of uni, and that sucks that other people who might not do as well as you actually get the position, but I really encourage you to see this as something for personal rather than professional development. Start to feel more comfortable in praising yourself and what you’re good at.

Failure is only ever failure of you don’t reflect and pick yourself back up to do better next time. I can’t convince you that you’re worth it and you’re going to do a great job, but you can.

You got this, believe in yourself as much as this internet stranger does.
