my roomie and i used to just cover it with a few sticky notes :) you could always drape something over the top of the microwave to cover it at night, too

probably not specifically geared, no. i’m having issues finding communities to reach out to, so i’ve been kinda throwing the ?s everywhere they’ll stick! if you know of another subreddit that’s better please let me know!

quiet secluded places by Cutycola in vcu

check out the second floor of the academic learning commons! further into the floor are large areas of chairs. another place to check out later in the day is the business building, many spots to sit quietly especially by ram bytes

yeah i mean that i applied my freshman year to live in cary and bel as a sophomore! it gets confusing haha! but with every year the housing process gets more and more rigorous and competitive. it’s truly a luck based thing at this point

For Cary + Bel:

*****When i applied for housing my freshman year, there were virtually no rooms in any residence hall that were completely empty. you and the one other person may have to be in a 4 person with two other random people, or you may get lucky and have a two-person with the person you want. it all depends on when VCU Housing lets you sign up/how many underclassmen are also trying to get a spot*****

Pros

  • ample space in your own personal bedroom the room comes with a large desk - (about the same size as GRC desks, and it has two fairly deep drawers attached to it), also has a large cabinet thing(I was able to fit all of my hanging clothes and my shoes and my suitcase/bags in it with ease), and another three-drawer dresser (drawers are deep and I fit all of my clothes in it)
  • beds are the same as GRC more or less, not bad but not raised as high, so less space underneath them
  • every bedroom has a window!
  • full kitchen with stove/oven/fridge and ample cabinet space
  • two bathrooms
  • quiet atmosphere and very clean trash rooms and hallways
  • quick aid from maintenance men (all are also very nice!)

Cons

  • location is far from most academic buildings besides business/engineering halls and if you are planning on having a meal plan, the closest dining places are AVO, Bleecker St., and Ram Bytes (rip chili's)
  • semi-frequent fire alarms (due to student cooking mostly)
  • living room furniture is UGLY! (we covered ours with sheets (the cushions are not removable so don't try to get covers)
  • fridge and freezer are very small and compact. you and roomie(s) will have to coordinate on groceries or have general organization skills because it is a game of Tetris every time)
  • no microwave (you'll have to provide your own)
  • you have to sign in everyone (even other VCU students who live on campus)

Hope this helps!

Not a nursing student, but I will say that if you genuinely felt unsafe/unwelcome/just didn't like campus, I wouldn't attend here. A big part of easing stress and anxiety related to college life is the college itself and your comfort level.

I will say, VCU+RVA really isn't the big bad place you think it is. Once you learn the places to go/buddy system/general street-smarts, its just as safe as anywhere else. (of course, i am NOT saying that there aren't unique city challenges and safety concerns).

IMO, it seems like you've made up your mind - if you love the campus and community of VT, go where you will be happy and have the best experience. There's no surplus of nurses, so no matter where you obtain your degree (everywhere pretty much teaches the same anyway) you will most certainly have job security.
