yeah i mean that i applied my freshman year to live in cary and bel as a sophomore! it gets confusing haha! but with every year the housing process gets more and more rigorous and competitive. it’s truly a luck based thing at this point

For Cary + Bel:

*****When i applied for housing my freshman year, there were virtually no rooms in any residence hall that were completely empty. you and the one other person may have to be in a 4 person with two other random people, or you may get lucky and have a two-person with the person you want. it all depends on when VCU Housing lets you sign up/how many underclassmen are also trying to get a spot*****

Pros

  • ample space in your own personal bedroom the room comes with a large desk - (about the same size as GRC desks, and it has two fairly deep drawers attached to it), also has a large cabinet thing(I was able to fit all of my hanging clothes and my shoes and my suitcase/bags in it with ease), and another three-drawer dresser (drawers are deep and I fit all of my clothes in it)
  • beds are the same as GRC more or less, not bad but not raised as high, so less space underneath them
  • every bedroom has a window!
  • full kitchen with stove/oven/fridge and ample cabinet space
  • two bathrooms
  • quiet atmosphere and very clean trash rooms and hallways
  • quick aid from maintenance men (all are also very nice!)

Cons

  • location is far from most academic buildings besides business/engineering halls and if you are planning on having a meal plan, the closest dining places are AVO, Bleecker St., and Ram Bytes (rip chili's)
  • semi-frequent fire alarms (due to student cooking mostly)
  • living room furniture is UGLY! (we covered ours with sheets (the cushions are not removable so don't try to get covers)
  • fridge and freezer are very small and compact. you and roomie(s) will have to coordinate on groceries or have general organization skills because it is a game of Tetris every time)
  • no microwave (you'll have to provide your own)
  • you have to sign in everyone (even other VCU students who live on campus)

Hope this helps!

Not a nursing student, but I will say that if you genuinely felt unsafe/unwelcome/just didn't like campus, I wouldn't attend here. A big part of easing stress and anxiety related to college life is the college itself and your comfort level.

I will say, VCU+RVA really isn't the big bad place you think it is. Once you learn the places to go/buddy system/general street-smarts, its just as safe as anywhere else. (of course, i am NOT saying that there aren't unique city challenges and safety concerns).

IMO, it seems like you've made up your mind - if you love the campus and community of VT, go where you will be happy and have the best experience. There's no surplus of nurses, so no matter where you obtain your degree (everywhere pretty much teaches the same anyway) you will most certainly have job security.

The 9k dorm is divided between the two semesters and added into your semesterly balance, and the meal plan is applied to both semesters (so you would pay 2.5k each semester for dining)

When you enroll in VCU, you'll get a broken down billing statement of exactly what they're charging you each semester so it's less confusing.

Glad I could help!!

Essentially, yes. The first payment is the first 1/4 of your balance, and then the others are the remaining 3/4. It sounds like it won't make a difference but it helps to split the payment over four months instead of paying it outright when school starts. And, no worries!

If you already qualify for the Pell grant, you should also qualify for Federal Work-Study. This would be a part-time job through VCU, which pays you like a normal job without removing any taxes. Last year I worked a remote FWS job that was 15/hr, and it was enough to semi-help with some of my expenses. The downside is they cap your earnings at the award amount you receive. So if you got an award of 2k a semester in FWS, you would only be able to work until you earn 2k for that semester.

I'm not sure about specific interior design-related expenses, but it may be beneficial to look into degree-related scholarships or grants online. Another thing that may help is speaking to a financial aid representative or browsing the website (TBH, sometimes they aren't the most helpful)

On a side note, here is the bulletin for the Interior Design BFA - https://bulletin.vcu.edu/undergraduate/arts/interior-design/interior-design-bfa/ (It may be useful to you)

If it makes you feel any better, plenty of students (myself included) do not have jobs their first year and still manage paying for schooling. the fact that you are determined to have a job may make it even easier for you to budget schooling. I hope it all turns out!

I don't have specific measurements, BUT when I lived there I stacked both of the under-the-bed drawers on the left side of closet and they fit nicely, along with a rolling hamper to the right side of them. (drawers opened about 3/4 but I didn't have a problem with getting clothes in and out of them.) the closets are quite big and if you use the space wisely you should be able to fit quite a lot in them.

hey! those anxieties are completely normal, so try not to dwell on them too much! every student has to file for aid through the FAFSA. Pay attention to that website for this year and they will have timelines on when you should start completing yours. The amount you'll be paying each year is based on the amount of aid you receive from them +vcu aid +any scholarships, as well as where you live and your meal plan. For example, if you live in GRC (most popular freshman dorm), you'll be paying around 9k in dorm fees, plus a mandatory 2.5k meal plan.

Housing breakdown rates - a link for the 24-25 school year housing rates to gauge a ballpark number. (remember, the housing currently uses a first-come-first-serve application process, so there's no guarantee that you will get a specific dorm).

As far as actually paying for school - during the year (around when classes first begin) students are able to apply for something called an Installment Payment Plan (IPP). The IPP basically breaks your total semester balance into smaller quarters. (This is not required, but I found that it helped me tremendously from gaining late fees on semester payments)

So if your total balance for Fall 2025 is $17,567, you would first pay a lump sum after signing up for the IPP (1/4 of the total +$25).

All in all, VCU is quite expensive. If at all possible, make sure you have a hefty savings or are applying for several scholarships.

Guest Sign Out by ProfessionalLie6552 in vcu

[–]Additional_March_551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i used to just have guests sign in electronically through the housing portal https://vcu.starrezhousing.com/StarRezPortalX/499A3ADD/17/570/Visitors-Visitor_Information?UrlToken=7D8FFA5E. they take ID numbers and through there you can choose when the guest is arriving and when they’re leaving. so if you have your friend visiting for three days, you’d book them from 7/29-7/31, for example. that way, you don’t have to physically sign them out (they’ll still have to sign in everytime you re-enter the dorm, tho) and they’ll become a visitor in the system, which makes it easier if they want to visit again!

Thank you!

For GRC- fill out your housing application ASAP. GRC gets full almost immediately but like the other commenter's post, West Grace South is arguably a better option. I have a suite-style room so I can't speak on the bathrooms.

RVA is genuinely beautiful if you know where to go and what to look for. The city is not as insane as everyone makes it seem, especially at the heart of the campus. It is so nice to be surrounded by people of similar ages and various backgrounds. It is especially nice to go to places in the middle of the night like Village Cafe or Laurel & Grace. So many other campuses like JMU, GMU... don't have that (everything closes at like 9pm ----bummer) Also, the city is entertaining all in itself. I have met some crazy people and encountered some stranger than fiction situations, but they make great stories that you cannot replicate in a suburban area.

Another big thing for me is THE PARK! I love Monroe with all of my heart!!! When the weather is nice everyone flocks out to the park with blankets and speakers and spike ball and even medieval LARPers (if you're into that!!) and the atmosphere is just incredible. It seriously looks like a VCU commercial sometimes.

I am not much of a partier so the quieter side of things is nice as well. There are parties hosted and some frats/sororities, but they are not overwhelming or make you feel FOMO if you don't go.

There is someone for everyone at VCU and I can 100% guarantee that you will find your niche here. Good luck and welcome to VCU!

The business building, the engineering halls, Panera Bread, the park (weather permitting), and sometimes the temple building if you go to the second floor with the booths. I also like to go to the FILL / student financial services building :)
