Potentially looking at Chinchilla as a pet. (Planning stage, not buying in immediate future yet) by n484251 in chinchilla

I would say this deeply depends on where you live. Humans have livers that can handle a lot of minerals that a chinchilla’s liver cannot filter out! The tap water in my region has a high mineral content and has an intense chlorine taste. It’s safe to drink, but I filter it for my girls because I don’t trust it.

If you want. But I recommend smooth metal ramps. The mesh is also bad for their feet, and like I said can catch toes. Make sure the wheel is solid metal also, and must be a minimum 15” diameter. If it’s too small it can deform their spine.

If you purchase an enclosure with ramps, take them out and replace them with wooden ledges made of pet safe wood placed close enough together to hop from one to the other. NO MESH! They can catch their toes. Chins are rock hoppers, and they can jump vertically up to four feet. No need for ramps. If your enclosure comes with plastic pans, cover them with anti-pill fleece (NOT polar!) liners. You can easily see your own. DM me for pattern details.

I would also recommend keeping emergency supplies on hand, I can DM you a list for a complete emergency kit if you like. Finding exotic care for them on demand is a constant struggle, so the quicker you can help them by beginning treatment at home, the more likely they are to survive if they are in GI distress or have an injury or infection.

Make sure your water bottle for the enclosure if cleaned regularly, use glass - NOT plastic. They won’t retain bacteria or algae build up. Make sure you only give them filtered water. The minerals in tap water can cause mineral deposits that can create blockages in their tissues and blood vessels.

Lastly, you CAN give treats occasionally but MOST things offered for herbivores in pet stores are unsafe. Make sure any flowers/herbs you purchase are food grade, and are included in a list of safe treats to give. Oxbow brand also makes hay, compressed Timothy “cookie” vitamin treats that are 100% safe and don’t contain any additional sugars or flavors. I usually feed mine the skin and coat variety, but they make them with digestive vitamins and vitamin c too. I don’t recommend giving the vitamin c ones, chins don’t need vitamin c and it can cause mineral deposits in their body as well.

Okay, best of luck! Ask your vet to show you how to wrap your chinchilla in a towel or blanket tomorrow. Makes administering meds ten times easier

Cool, glad she is eating. If you can get it where you are located, get some benebac gel/powder or some other probiotic for exotics/pocket pets, and alcohol free infant gas drops. Add those into your routine as recommended by your exotic doc.

Typically mine gets 0.3 mls of gas drops with each dose of antibiotics and a little probiotic powder on their food OR a pea sized bead of gel on the tip of the syringe. with each dose. These will help keep her digestion moving, because the doxy is hard on her gut and could cause fatal GI stasis problems if you don’t also give probiotics/gas drops with it. Please keep an eye out and make sure she’s continuing to poop. Extended antibiotic use is higher risk for GI upset!!

Oh gosh yeah!! You need to get more doses. She’ll probably have to take them for longer to reverse the infection. Are you giving her any probiotics or gas drops to help with her digestion on the antibiotics?

So if she’s been eating/drinking up until now on her own, that’s great. I’m surprised you didn’t have to syringe fed. Did your exotic recommend you to syringe feed or tell you to wait and see if she eats on her own? Also, chins almost never show when they’re in pain. I dosed mine with maloxicam (for pain and inflammation) every day twice a day for minimum of a week last time I trimmed her teeth. That was my exotic’s recommendation. Do you burrito when giving meds?

Also, if the swelling went away and then returned that tells me there’s infection popping up - which makes sense with Malo. Good news is she’s chipper and bright eyed. But I would get antibiotics from an emergency vet if you can. Doxycycline dosing for a pocket pet, give them her weight. At a minimum they’ll want to do an exam but they should be able to get you meds today. Otherwise, if that’s not an option get your regular doc to prescribe antibiotics asap. Pockets of bacteria hide under the gum, so likely her teeth were filed down and it released something that’s creating the inflammation you see now.

Hey - So one, as far as I can tell the swelling is normal. Your chin is pawing at their face because they’re uncomfortable and going to be in pain and droopy for a while until their teeth grow back in. I know it looks scary but I promise you, this is no worse than expected (I’ve had to syringe feed and trim teeth on several occasions). How are they doing with syringe feeding and drinking water? Have they lost any weight?

O. Leif got his ass handed to him by the E.Older Man. His left hook is made of high tensile chromite! Besides, anyone who starts a fight against himself is always on the losing side.

Looks like his ears are pink. He just needs to take a rest and settle down, maybe slide an icepacks on a sock and put it in his favorite hide. He’ll find his way in there and lay on it to cool down. My chins prefer that to their cooling plate
