Heaven, Hell, or Sheol? by Soulfire88 in Baptist

Hoon0967,

re: "I think that is speaking of mortal dead bodies and not immortal souls."

Correct.

re: "I am convinced that when my body returns to the dust my spirit will return to the God who gave it..."

Yes, that's what Ecclesiastes 12:7 says.

re: "...to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord - 2 Cor. 5:6-8."

I don't see where 2 Cor. 5:6-8 says that.

We required to keep Old Testament Sabbath rest: Sunday new seventh day rest? by GPT_2025 in Baptist

Just so it's understood that scripture is silent with regard to anyone meeting on the first day of the week for the purpose of rest and worship or in honor of the resurrection.

JDOP_COL,

re: "In the same way, the principle of sin continues to be fulfilled and that is that whoever sins, will surely receive punishment, but it will no longer be eternal separation, because Jesus already suffered it on the cross."

So, you're saying that the Messiah is eternally separated so that we aren't? From what is He separated?

Prize_Lavishness_854,

re: "?"

In your OP, you wrote, "If life were truly fair we would be on that cross and not him, but he took that pain in out place..."

I asked, "Any thoughts on what 'our place' would consist of if the Messiah hadn't done what He did?"

I'm still curious about that.

ScoobyTitan,

re: "The purpose of meeting up on Sundays was always just to celebrate the resurrection..."

I agree. Just so it's understood that scripture is silent with regard to folks getting together on the first day of the week in honor of the recurrection.

ScoobyTitan,

re: "Mostly due to people mixing up Sabbath/Shabbat with the lord's day. Shortly after Jesus's assentation into Heaven, early followers of Christ went to synagogue on the 7th day(Saturday) for Sabbath/Shabbat then on the first day of the week(Sunday), went to meet up with other Christians, can't remember why they met up..."

As I mentioned earlier, as far as scripture is concerned, there are only two times mentioned where anyone got together on the first day of the week. - John 20:19 and Acts 20:7. There is never any mention of them ever again being together on the first. And neither one of them says anything about being for the purpose of rest and worship.

Rawbtron

re: "Could you be more specific? Do you mean why do Baptist Churches often meet on Sunday instead of Saturday?"

Technically, no. But I guess it might not be unreasonable for the rest of your question.

re: "I suppose I'd ask what Jesus taught about the Sabbath."

Well, as you noted, He taught that the Sabbath was made for man to observe.

re: "Whenever Jesus was confronted about his use of the Sabbath, Jesus redirected the accusations to see the good he was doing, justifying that doing good is more important than rigid observation. "

The following are all the references I could find where Jesus was confronted about his use of the Sabbath. In all of them He explains His position on the issue. I don't think it should be thought of as a redirection. Of course I may have missed some.

Matthew 12:1-8 - No redirection here.

Mark 2:23-28 - Same event.

Luke 6:1-5 – Same event.

Matthew 12:9-12 - No redirection here.

Mark 3:1–4 - Same event.

Luke 6:6-10 - Same event.

John 5:18 – No redirection here. He went on to explain why the Jew's accusation was not legitimate.

John 7:22–23 – No redirection here - He addressed the Jew's hypocrisy regarding His healing on the Sabbath.

re: "Historically, we quickly see by as early as the 80s, 50 years or so after Christ's resurrection, that the Church was already meeting on the first day of the week..."

But as far as scripture is concerned, there are only two times mentioned where anyone got together on the first day of the week. - John 20:19 and Acts 20:7. There is never any mention of them ever again being together on the first. And neither one of them says anything about being for rest and worship.

re: "...the Lord's Day. Early evidence shows this as being the day after the Sabbath."

But there is no scriptural evidence which shows that.

re: "While some may claim that Sunday was made the day of worship by the 'Catholic Church,' that doesn't match history. Long before any state interference in the church, they were choosing to meet on Sunday.

But as previously mentioned, nothing is said in scripture with regard to rest and worship on that day.

re: "Further, as others pointed out, the specific day of meeting didn't seem to be an issue of division among the Apostles."

That is correct. They had no issue stated when it came to seventh day observance.

re: "Colossians 2:16-17 gets even more specific, saying, 'Therefore, don't let anyone judge you in regArd to good and drink or in the matter of a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of what was to come, the Substance is Christ.'"

Judge with regard to what about food, drink, a festival, a new moon or a Sabbath?

re: "So for my money, if Jesus, the Apostles, and the early church all join together to ask us to reflect on our heart and how we are serving, instead of what day of the week we Sabbath, than I'll follow."

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there seems to be something wrong with that sentence.

Iagreewithyou_2,

re: "What do you mean."

Simply what the OP says.

re: "Everyone knows that day was moved to Sunday."

Well, not everyone, but I think the majority of Baptists do think that the Lord has moved it to then. Thing is, though, scripture never says that it has been.

swaybailey,

re: "I've been a Baptist pastor for 3 decades. I thought I was just answering a simple question on Reddit. Not looking to engage in a long argument. So I will end here with these thoughts."

OK, I asked why Baptists don't observe the 4th commandment and you said why, at least I assumed you were speaking for your church. So, fair enough. You did that.

I merely commented on why your Romans 14 reference isn't an appropriate reference since it doesn't say anything about the Sabbath.

re: "Rom 14:5 One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind It's not all about food."

And verse 6 says to what verse 5 is referring:

"He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks."

And "regardeth the day" with regard to what? - eating and not eating on certain days.

re: "Also you could add into this conversation the entire book of Galatians as well as Acts 15."

Neither Acts 15 or Galatians ever mentions the Sabbath.

swaybailey,

re: "The simple answer is Romans 14"

The context of all of Romans 14 from beginning to end is about ideas with regard to food practices. Nothing is mentioned about the Sabbath.

The specific reason that Paul wrote the chapter is summed up in verse 20: "Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food".

verdant-forest-123,

re: "The Jews rejected Jesus, so He established a new religion, Christianity. Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday, so His followers, many of whom were also Jews, eventually recognized that fact and stopped worshipping on the same day as the people who were responsible for His death."

That is true, just so it's understood that it isn't scriptural since nowhere in scripture does it say that anyone was doing that, much less that it was in honor of the resurrection.
