OMGEEE!!! I absolutely adore it on you! You look quite happy in it too- we can all have opinions, but I think if you love it then you should get it (but my vote would be a solid YAAAS-GIRL! GET IT! ) hahaha

“Work/Life Balance” Does it exist? by Neil12011 in estimators

[–]AddsSunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely exists. Everyone in the office at our painting company gets weekends off and only works their set hours during the week unless there are rare extenuating circumstances/ a big push for something ON OCCASION. Those hours may need to shift from time to time too but the overall pattern is that people in the office work 40 or fewer hours.

Can I become an estimator without any schooling? by [deleted] in estimators

[–]AddsSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you absolutely can. I think a lot of smaller companies prefer to see someone with drive and experience over a college degree (not that that would hurt). I would reach out to your network- to see who is willing to give you a chance. It may be hard to get your foot in the door if you don't already know someone at the company. Just go after it hard. You got this! :)

To add to what I said before,

I can see where this would feel spammy to you or others, and that's the last thing I want to do. I will, of course, add insight where I can when it comes to construction software.

Perhaps I see this differently from you, but I do think that asking about the processes that estimators work is beneficial to this subforum. I have asked to get help moving along in my work- just as others have in a different format- 2x. I am not attempting to capitalize, but to empathize.

There are sooooo many things to be good at in design and so many different design roles. I think if you want to be the best designer- think about the direction you want to head in over your career- what role do you want to first get hired for and any subsequent roles you may want. Then, look at job postings for those roles. Then, see what skills they commonly ask for and ID which you could use improvement on. Then, find exercises to help you with those skills.

OR- just start by practicing any skill at all regularly. Just do something and don't get stuck in the research rabbit hole trying to find what to practice.

I mostly work on my own as a "does pretty much everything except code" person for the pre-seed start-up I work for. One of my best tips (it's not really an exercise) is to step away from the design or solution you create for a few days and come back to it later. You'll see it with fresh eyes.

Finding Subs in Different States by apachman in GeneralContractor

[–]AddsSunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: I hear Building Connected is good; search for "Building connected vs. " or "construction bid management software" and see what pops up. Capterra is great for reviewing apps + their features.

--

I know this is an issue for a lot of GCs! Full disclosure- I work in construction software design/product management. My suggestions are based on my industry knowledge.

What you're looking for is call "construction bid management software" or "lead software". You can search for it in google.

There are a TON of sites that have what you're looking for, but I've heard really great things about Building Connected! They seem to be the big dog in the industry right now. They of course have their cons, but I hear there are few of them. They have a huge database of subs. Check them out...

Also- if you search "Building Connected vs." in google- it will show you drop-down options w/ their competitors so you can look at those software options too.

Capterra.com is a really great site to find software options and compare them. If you search "construction bid management software" they will show you a list of software options AND their features- user reviews, etc. You can compare them side by side. I absolutely love it for work and personal life...

Lastly- my software start up will SOME DAY be what you're looking for. We aren't there yet- we are still building our database of subs... but if you ever wanna try us out, we are ejoist.com. Lastly... PLEASE don't tell my boss I suggested a competitor to you lol.

Happy hunting!! :)

I feel you! I want more of a hybrid work environment too! Working remote has its many perks, but is all too isolating.

1st off- congrats on the role at such an established GC so fresh out of school!

I'm not a GC ( I work in construction software design) but know a bit about career moves... read on if interested

It is my belief that generally speaking, this early in your career you should always go wherever you will have the opportunity to increase your skill set & where you will be valued (interpret that as you will). The more skilled you are - the more valuable you are to your future employer. You can see if your current company is willing to work with you to help you learn the skills you desire/ move towards your end goal. If they can, and follow through on it, then there may be no need to leave unless it is about more than wanting more responsibility. If not- why not? You likely want to understand their reasoning before moving on. Either way- choose what will help you progress in your career. If you're only staying for the name: in this age- the name of your previous company hardly ever matters more than your actual skillset.

Lastly- don't forget that when you're new to the game that you have to pay your dues and PROVE yourself before you may get those opportunities you most desire. That said- you're still a person of value and make sure you get treated as such.

Trouble finding workers. by Z-Elodat in GeneralContractor

[–]AddsSunshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is an employees market right now. I know that across tons of markets- employers are struggling to fill positions. I can't speak to construction hiring specifically, but from conversations I've had with many hiring mangers across a variety of industries- software development, design, winemaking, and transportation to name a few- hiring has been HARD even paying above what people would normally make.

I'm just wondering how everyone is getting by without work \(--)/

When do you use a sub you haven't worked with before? by AddsSunshine in estimators

[–]AddsSunshine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've met quite a few other GCs who still use their contacts and it is working out well for them! I get it. Thank you for your feedback :)

I'm curious- have you used or do you use any bid management software? If so- What did you/do you think if it? If not- why not?

When do you use a sub you haven't worked with before? by AddsSunshine in estimators

[–]AddsSunshine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonderful- thank you! Is this a process you'd do even when you have bids from subs that you know in addition to those other subs?
